Hudson Valley Restaurant Weeks Spring 2014 - March 10-23

I have not encountered many crowds during RW. Perhaps I choose less popular restaurants. North was probably the most crowded one I've encountered (last year), and Crabtree's Kittle House for lunch this year. I also don't agree with the menus being dumbed down. Often the items are on their regular menu, or are interesting variations from their regular menu.

Lunch and service was very good at Crabtree's Kittle House. I didn't like the dessert much, goat cheese cheesecake with some sort of pear ginger sorbet, but the skirt steak with chimichurri sauce was delicious, as was the crab & corn chowder appetizer.

I also had dinner at Hudson House in Cold Spring. We were the only ones in the restaurant for nearly the first hour of our meal (we arrived at 5:30). I really enjoyed having the beautiful, empty room to ourselves, and the waitstaff was friendly and attentive. A stack of roasted eggplant, roasted peppers, tomatoes, fresh mozz, and balsamic reduction made for a tasty appetizer. I had steak there as well, topped with blue cheese and caramelized onions, which was really good. Apple strudel for dessert was just okay, but my companions had chocolate bourbon pecan pie which was quite enjoyable.

Really enjoyed both of my RW experiences this year, especially Hudson House.

Flames Bar and Grill, Briarcliff Manor

Their menu says "Now more affordable". I grew up in Briarcliff and still haven't been there, I heard the prices were always outragaous. New menu/pricing: http://flamesbarandgrill.com/menu/

Cold Spring/Beacon NY Wedding Weekend Food

Aroma Osteria is great! Beacon Falls Cafe is a good option for brunch although the restaurant is kind of small. I've never had a bad meal there.

What discontinued products do you miss?

Pizzaria chips! I totally forgot about those! Used to love them. I looked them up and apparently they are spelled with an "a", not an "e" like you would normally spell pizzeria.

Hudson valley day trip or....

You mean Hyde Park? I haven't toured the inside of the mansions (Mills Mansion, Vanderbilt, FDR Estate) but they all have nice grounds, walking trails, and nice views, I'd say they are worth visiting if you don't mind going a bit further.

Hudson valley day trip or....

I went to high school with the Westchester Breakfast Club people. They know their stuff :-)

Beacon NY Restaurants

I'll third Poppy's, great burgers but if you're looking for a "nice" atmosphere, Beacon Falls Cafe is very good. (Poppy's has a more casual atmosphere.) The Roundhouse is nice, I've only eaten there once on their patio and I found the prices to be reasonable. Although I just checked and the patio is closed for the season.

Fall Hudson Valley Restaurant Weeks - November 4-17, 2013

We really enjoyed the food, although the service could have been better. They served popcorn as a precursor to the meal which was tasty, and then they also brought bread out. I had skirt steak which was served over caramelized onion and tiny pieces of bacon, along with creamed spinach. Very good! We had a table right next to the window but since it was dark, unfortunately we didn't benefit from the great view. We would go back, and hope for better service.

Fall Hudson Valley Restaurant Weeks - November 4-17, 2013

I will be going to the Terrace Club in Mahopac on Wednesday - trying someplace new. Valley's menu is now posted, btw.

Ithaca advice needed

I love Dewitt Cafe for brunch! Just be prepared for a wait on the weekends.

Hudson Valley for 4 days!

Not sure if your trip is already over, but microbreweries in the area are Newburgh Brewing Company (Newburgh), Hyde Park Brewing Company (Hyde Park), The Gilded Otter (New Paltz), Keegan Ales (Kingston). They all have hit or miss beers, but you're sure to find a couple that you like at each one. Newburgh has a nice beer hall atmosphere. As applesauce23 mentioned, The Hop has a nice selection of beers but doesn't brew their own. For other good selections of beer, try The Beech Tree, The Dubliner, and/or Babycakes in Poughkeepsie, and the Golden Rail Ale House in Newburgh (that's a dive bar, very casual relaxed atmosphere with amazing popcorn and wings).

Best Pizza in Dutchess County

I have never tried Simone's despite passing it on the way to work every day - I'll have to try it!

Best Pizza in Dutchess County

Yes - La Torretta in Hopewell, in the A&P Plaza on Route 52. Better than my old favorites!

recs in Potsdam and Ithaca?

Ithaca - Just a Taste for tapas, Taste of Thai, Glenwood Pines if you want a delicious burger.

Solo, midweek lunches in rivertowns or other pretty places? [Westchester and Putnam counties]

Somewhere in Cold Spring - if you don't have a view during lunch, you can get one after. The Boathouse in Ossining, outside on their patio.

Farmers Markets Northern Westchester, lower Hudson Valley?

Do you mean Migliorelli Farm? Yup, they are everywhere. Their site says they are at over 30 farmers markets.

Bacon, egg & cheese sandwich (+SPK) in Poughkeepsie/Lagrangeville/Hopewell Junction area

I don't eat these as much as I used to, but now you're making me want one! I remember them being good at East Fishkill Provisions (2 locations in Hopewell). I think they make their own bacon.

What discontinued products do you miss?

The closest Costco is about 50 minutes away, if I am ever nearby I will have to stop and look for Posado!

Good diners/casual spots on Rt 17?

I have to agree with this - I am from Westchester and went to Cornell, and we used to time it so that we wouldn't need a meal along the way. Have an early dinner/late lunch in Ithaca! Or stop in Binghamton, although I'm not familiar with the food there, it's likely better than anything else you'd find along the rest of 17.

DGresh, I hope your sun has a wonderful time at the summer program! Ithaca is amazing in the summer. I took part in a very short (one week) summer program at Cornell while I was in high school, and then ended up going there.

New sandwich shop in Wappingers

Thanks for the review, I'll have to check them out, now that you mention it I remember seeing a sign up with their name!

If price, availability and calories were not a factor.... what food could you eat for every meal for the next 30 days and not get sick of it.

Yup, pizza for me too!

East Fishkill Provisions

Where on Route 55? I visited one once near the carwash in Poughquag? (Not sure if that's the right town.) But I think they still have a catering business, so probably not the same?

East Fishkill Provisions

I work one minute away from the location on the hill, and pass the other location on my way home from work. I haven't tried their wings - will have to do so! Lately I'm loving their fish sandwich. A couple of months back I had a sandwich with smoked roast beef and it was delicious.

In the same area, I also love S&J's in Hopewell on 52, which is an Italian deli.

New Restaurants in Wappingers Falls

I never tried the outpost but I saw that they closed. Nothing seems to be able to survive in that spot. When I go to Billy Joe's in Newburgh I go for the view and spot by the water, not really the food, so that's probably another reason why the outpost closed.

Am I the only adult in America who doesn't like coffee?

I tasted it once when I was little and thought it tasted like Clorox. I actually haven't tried it since, and have no interest in trying it. I've had coffee-type drinks like iced caramel mocchiattos a couple of times, but if they weren't loaded down with sugar I'm sure I wouldn't be able to drink it. I also don't drink tea though, so people think I'm really weird since I don't drink either hot beverage. They just don't appeal to me.

Survery: Do you like Mayonnaise?

I knew I would describe this incorrectly :-[ "Jalapeno aioli" or "Chipotle aioli", I like those. I haven't had plain aioli, I don't think.

Survery: Do you like Mayonnaise?

D. I like it in potato salad/macaroni salad, but I don't ever put it on sandwiches except for chicken cutlet with lettuce. I much prefer mustard on my sandwiches. I also like it in aiolis, which are usually mayo-based, but the mayo flavor is not apparent.

agriturismo, pine plains

Someone on Yelp says "Agriturismo restaurant CLOSED the weekend of December 14, 2012. There was no advance notice."

Seems like they closed for good. If it was just for the winter, their website probably would still be up.

I LOVE the Bolthouse yogurt dressings!!
