Gastropubs/bars for foodies on the North Shore?
Thanks -- I will check out Calas & Gulu-Gulu! Anyone tried The Old Spot in Salem?
I forgot about the Riverview --used to go there with my parents back in the day.
Gastropubs/bars for foodies on the North Shore?
Looking for casual places with great food/beer/drinks for our regular girls' night out. Preferably Beverly, Danvers, Peabody area. Thanks!
Place for al fresco Sunday breakfast or brunch?
These are great suggestions but I need to be more specific -- it needs to be in Boston proper because I only have a short window of time to meet with someone who is flying in Just for the day & won't have a car & I am driving down from the north shore.
Place for al fresco Sunday breakfast or brunch?
Thanks that looks good but it looks like it doesn't open until 11:00 and we need to meet around 9:30-10. Bummer,
Place for al fresco Sunday breakfast or brunch?
Looking for a place with a nice outdoor seating area, inexpensive, not a buffet, pref with water views. Does this exist?
Where can I purchase fresh squid (calamari) on the North Shore? Near Beverly? Tomorrow?!
Need it for my Feast of Seven Fishes and coming up short. Thanks!
Anything new and GOOD near TD Banknorth Garden?
Haven't been in town in a while & just found out we are going to an event tonight. Won't have time to hit the North End or walk far beforehand. Anything new right in the area? I did a number of searches on here and other sites and am coming up empty. Will have to settle for mediocre pub food at the Fours? sigh...
Sicilian pizza on the North Shore?
Thanks for the suggestions --we ended up getting the pizza at Bob's since a friend was coming from the area, but as a result of your suggestion we have started going to Dom's ourselves and love it --it is our new family dinner night out spot. My husband had an amazing Shepard's pie there with gorgonzola mashed potatoes and asparagus in lieu of peas. We have also loved the antipasto salad and the tomato, cucumber, mozzarella salad. Chicken soup also great and loved the chicken parm. The only miss has been the bolognese ( I don't like sweet sauce and their version is quite sweet with raisins which I wasn't expecting). Bread is great --overall a great find! Thanks!
December Markets, CSAs, Farm Stands, etc. [old]
We started winter share CSA with Green Meadow Farm in Hamilton this season and couldn't be happier. All organic and includes fruit! Each week there is a great variety and when you pick it up you get to walk around the farm stand and make choices (either 1 butternut or 4 delicata, etc). This week we got 3 heads broccoli, a large bag of rainbow chard, 1 delicata squash, 1 qt beets, 2lbs sweet potatoes, 1 head red leaf Romaine, 2 large grapefruits, 1 pomegranate, 4 tangerines, celery, sun dried tomatoes, 4 Bartlett pears, 5 zucchini...and I'm probably forgetting something! In the past few weeks we have gotten every kind of squash available, turnips, potatoes, Japanese turnips, parsnips, carrots, radishes, all kinds of greens, medjool dates, herbs, pineapples, apples, bananas, cranberries...They also do organic meat shares (grass-fed beef, pork, and lamb) and raise free-range chickens. Our two year old loves feeding the pigs each week when we go get our veggies. I have also picked up their homemade soups a couple times which have been great. I think that a lot of the pantry and refrigerated products there are too expensive, but for $40 a week I think the organic fruit and veggie winter share is a steal.
Sicilian pizza on the North Shore?
Does anyone know where I could find excellent Sicilian pizza on the North Shore? In general I am a thin -crust fan, but looking for big trays to make an event affordable. The only one I've ever really liked is Bob's of Medford but it's a little too far to make it convenient. Would love to find somewhere in the Beverly/Peabody/Danvers/Salem area. Thanks!
Romantic restaurants with great food for anniv "trip" to Portland?
Thanks for the advice --Caiola's was phenomenal --one of the best meals I have had in a long time. We had an appetizer with figs, gorgonzola, honey butter, raspberries & crispy proscuitto chips --gorgeous presentation and even better taste! For an entree I had scallops with a mushroom risotto chock full of four different types of locally foraged mushrooms. My husband had the burger with homemade "tater tots" which he loved. Service was fantastic and we sat on the patio which was a really pleasant atmosphere. When I didn't like my drink, the waitress brought over a few glasses and some different wines for me to taste before I made the next selection. When our bill was under $70 we could not believe the value. We will certainly be back!
We skipped breakfast (had to take advantage of being able to sleep in!!!) but headed to Duckfat for lunch...ooh my waistline suffered for this but boy it was worth it. I had the BGT (Bacon, goat cheese & tomato) and DH had a special beef brisket panini with salsa verde. I dream about the BGT. Also the best poutine I have ever had. Finished off the meal with the beignets with chocolate sauce (because you can never jam too many calories into one lunch). Also the coffee was outstanding and great laid back atmosphere. We got there just before noon but as we were leaving the place was getting packed.
We will definitely be back to Portland --look forward to exploring more food destinations there and thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the feedback --a friend of mine also highly recommended Caiola's and Duckfat looks great! We are staying at the Eastern Park Hotel --we would prefer to walk; is it easy to get around the city?

Romantic restaurants with great food for anniv "trip" to Portland?
We are spending the first night ever away from our toddler to take a mini-one night trip to Portland for our five year anniv.
Looking for a place to stay that has great breakfast or other breakfast spots, and easy, on the go lunch spot and a romantic dinner spot with excellent food (definite seafood lovers!) . A place with a view would be great too. Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive, cozy is good too! Thanks!
Good options in Beverly?
I live in walking distance from Nick's so I have to say we are frequent fliers...Whether eating in or taking home I have found the onion rings to be at times crispy, almost always oddly devoid of flavor and the fries are always under-done. But, like I said, I love the roast beef and the chicken fingers are a guilty pleasure as well.
Good options in Beverly?
I like Depot Diner for breakfast/lunch, though it can get pretty busy. I do love the roast beef at Nick's, but their fries & onion rings are not very good. Across the street is North Beverly Roast Beef & Seafood which has nice fried scallops. I love Kame but have tried Siam Delight three times and found them to be very inconsistent. If you want something sweet grab a whoopie pie from Henry's --they are the best!

Lowell area recs, off of 495?
Wow, great feedback, I'll look into all of these recs --thanks!
Lowell area recs, off of 495?
Meeting some friends in the middle for dinner --figure off of 495 in the Lowell area is about 1/2-way but no one is very familiar with the area. Any recommendations? 30-something girls looking for great food and cocktails...open to anything but faves would be Italian, Mediterranean, sushi or Asian cuisine...easy access to 495...thanks!
Any feedback on these Hamilton-area places?
Well, to answer some of my own questions went to Henderson's for breakfast and 15 Walnut for dinner yesterday.
Henderson's --small, no-frills, neighborhood place. Definitely a lot of regulars, older crowd (we were kind of worried we had taken someone's regular seat)...but very friendly staff. Simple breakfast --scrambled eggs, bacon, homefries, toast. The bread is homemade and was delicious --I would go back for that alone. Everything else was tasty too; although the homefries lacked crispiness, they made up for it in flavor. Coffee, not so good. It cost us a lot less than our usual Beverly Depot so that was good too.
15 Walnut --I really love the homey feel of the place. Great service and live jazz was a nice treat. Ginger martini was nice and strong! Appetizers --crab arancini --creamy, crisp and delicious and gruyere & white wine fondue --yum! For dinner I had the porcini crusted sea scallops, cooked to perfection with sauteed garlic escarole and mac & cheese. I was a little disappointed in the mac & cheese --it was good but it didn't blow me away. DCs both had lobster mac & cheese which they really enjoyed. For dessert we split the molten chocolate cake with chocolate icecream and flambeed bananas --I know some people turn up their nose at molten cake (too pedestrian for some food snobs ;-) but it is always my favorite and with the addition of the bananas...I dreamt about it...
Still looking for feedback on the other places and for a Henderson's lunch review...
Any feedback on these Hamilton-area places?

BTW -- I should add that I used Mrs. Renfro's hot jalapeno salsa verde in the recipe and on the side.

So, to report back, the event was a great success and there was a lot of great food. I was inspired by the chicken enchilada and pulled pork recipes so I ended up making a huge batch of braised pork in the slow cooker :
http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/slow_cooker_braised_pork_with_salsa.html
I reduced the liquid down a lot and served it as a "carnitas" taco bar with corn tortillas, slaw, sour cream, salsa, salsa verde, cotija cheese, guacamole & lime wedges. It was a big hit and couldn't have been easier --I made it all the prior weekend and froze it. It was also very affordable, using pork butt.
I also made that Mediterranean Eggplant & Barley Salad from the Smitten Kitchen website and it was really good!
Some other things that people brought that worked well were enchilada casserole, maki sushi, chicken gruyere, arugula, proscuitto & boursin finger sandwiches, chicken egg rolls, orzo salad, antipasto salad, chicken salad and much more.
I appreciate all of your suggestions and look forward to using more of them as it is a monthly event!
