Heading down to The Orange County Center for the Performing Arts ...

Seasons 52 across the street at South Coast Plaza. You should be able to accommodate both of your eating 'styles'.

House of Basturma in Pasadena

I was incorrect. This place was open, for at least 2 or three weeks about a year ago. This morning I peeked through the window doors and it looks abandonded. Empty shelves, a ladder and the menu board. I wonder what happened?

I will check, but there cannot be two of them. Corner of Valencia and Washington, one block west of Altadena Dr. It has never opened since the old auto mechanic's place was razed (sp?) and this stucco monstrosity was erected. I will look at it more closely in the morning.

Any pizza in L.A. like Lombardi's?

Yes, why do you dislike Bollini's?

BEST PIZZA IN THE SAN GABRIEL VALLEY?

According to Verace Pizza Napoletana and Verace Pizza Napoletana Americas, what Bollini's makes is pizza and what we are accustomed to eating is not.
The group proposed that any pizza shop that 1. didn’t make its dough from "00" flour, salt, water and yeast only; 2. didn’t use a wood-fired oven burning at 800 F; 3. didn’t use San Marzano tomatoes and salt as its only sauce; and 4. didn’t use fior di latte or mozzarella di bufala as its only cheeses couldn’t call its pie a pizza.
Pizza snobbery? Who knows but Neopoletana style pizza is not NY or New Haven or Chicago. VPN believes pizza started there in the 1880's and is the only pizza.
I prefer this type of pizza and can't wait to go to Bollini's. Domenicos [on Washington in Pasadena/Altadena] is OK and it is three blocks from home. We don't go for pizza 'cause most if not all of them are the thick crust laden with too much cheese and foo-foo toppings. But this is why there are more just one or two wines. Everyone is different and has different tastes. Give Bollini's more of a chance. "like an open-face quesadilla" would turn me off from pizza as well.

Houston's Pasadena

The Wife and I have been there far too many times and we have never had any of the problems described here. Service is always good and has never been close to poor. We only order ribs and wine/beer. Sometimes we take advantage of the low, low corkage fee (there is no corkage fee). I have only been to the Pasadena location, although we walked past the NYC location last month and were almost tempted, but we had just been to Jean Goerge's the day before. Don't think it would have been the same.

Pizza in Pasadena

"but it seemed like an awfully out-of-the-way place for a product pretty similar to the other offerings around town."

I thought that was the thing about these boards. Finding the best food wherever it happens to be located. Bulgarini is perhaps the best gelato in town [Pasadena, hands down] and so it takes a little onger to get there and the people watching is not as good as One Colorado. I guess I am lucky because Bulgarini is the closest gelato establishment to my house and there is no need to go to Pazzo unless I happen to somehow be in Silverlake. For me Tutti Gelati in nice but not Bulgarini.

business dinner in pasadena?

Madeleine's, for it is not only a wine bar but has a very elegant dining room [or 2?]and really good food. Some of the servers are more interested in their bigger tables but the manager/maitre d will take excellent care of you. On Green Street somewhere east of Mentor. But not so inexpensive but almost reasonable.

Need advice on Cliff's Edge (Silverlake)!

I agree with italianstallion: Just don't go. Find someother place to eat. The food is mediocre at best, the service really not very good and the only good thing that we found about Cliff's Edge is that it is really close to Pazzo, the gelato joint on the other side of Sunset. Not knowing Silverlake very well, I am unable to recommend a place of better quality for dinner, although we love everything we have had at Aroma, but most on this board say no, so who do you listen to???

sweet lady jane- incredibly rude!

I have never been but maybe the 'rude' service is part of thier overall plan? Irony [or oxymoron] in the name Sweet Lady Jane? Like The Bucket years ago in Eagle Rock? Just an un-educated opinion!!!

Lucky Boy and Everyone Else (near Pasadena)

How about the breakfast burrito with some sort of polish-type sausage at Wonder Burger? On Foothill between Altadena and San Gabriel, very near La Estrella. I think it is the grease from the sausage that makes me salivate whenever I drive by this place.

The Wyndham across from OCPAC on Ave of the Arts? I don't think you could walk to any of the above mentioned places, unless an hour or more each way is in your timeframe?

La Estrella (Orange Grove & Marengo) was awful

Having been to al of the La Estrella places in Pasadena, I will only go to the one at Foothill/Altadena. We have all been told numerous times to do this on this board, but sometimes we forget.I have yet to try Wildswede's favorite stall but will get to it soon.

GOING TO DODGER STADIUM

I went om Monday for Opening Day and sat in the right field pavillon for the AM-PM All you can eat. The new parking system has a few problems [big laugh] and the personalities in the bleachers are somewhat interesting but the food is as you would expect. Poor! I arrived at 11:50am and by 11:55 I was in my seat with two dodger dogs, peanuts and cokes. The beverages are in a Soda Station [Think AM-PM gone horribly wrong] and there was no line at that time, most likey 'cause everyone else was stuck in the parking lot. And no-one ever goes to Dodger Stadium just for a dodger dog. Like going to Tommys just for the chili. It is the atmosphere. And yes there are better dogs/brats located elswhere in the stadium and Yankee stadium has better ones and yes the beer is expensive but it is the same at any sporting venue. All said, I have three more games in the All-you-can-eat Pavillon and I look forward to them [food-wise] in much the same way as my mother-in-law's cooking.

Highland Park 12 and general questions

The environment when aging in the barrel has a whle lot to do with ocean/salt flavors. And remember the Michael Jackson called Highland Park one of the great whiskies of the world. I find smoke and heather in it when I have some. I currently have an Old Malt Cask bottling of 16yr old Highland Park that is just wonderful. Keep tasting and be anal about it. Write stuff down. And always remember to try Ardbeg in any form. Not really for the weak.

If you like Aberlour 15, buy all of it that you can find as they no longer make it. The produce a 16yr old instead. Have you tried 'abunadh' [sp?] also from Aberlour? Cask strength and wonderful.
