What are some over-rated L.A. restaurants to you? Why, specifically? Only one each!

Agree with Intelligentsia being overrated. Their coffee is actually worse than overrated, it's awful. A lot of places around town that have "one" coffee they serve when you order, serve a blend that has a sharp note that I don't like, and it ain't smooth.

OP asked for one example, but since you gave 6, let me respond:

Langers - I like it and can't name any BETTER pastrami, but Brent's is good as is Greenblatt's...

Din Tai Fung - agreed, overhyped, but not BAD

Shunji - never been

Philippe's - Totally agree, completely OVERHYPED. Cole's is much better as is Houston's

Park's BBQ - I am a BIG fan. I have not had any better Korean BBQ in LA, although their banchan often disappoints

Bludso's - I am from Texas originally, and Kevin's Q is the real deal. For me, Phillip's is a distant second. HOWEVER, the mash up location on LA Brea sucks!

My over-rated award goes to...<drumroll>...Tito's Tacos, cause they taste like ass.

L.A. Dish of the Month, February 2015 -- BURGERS

Sorry no pic, but I had a cheeseburger last night at Local Peasant in Sherman Oaks. Now, I have had this burger before, so mine is an informed opinion. I would describe it this way: soft, pillowly brioche bun which is very buttery, nice char on the burger, and perfectly melted cheddar. The meat is of high quality, to my taste, and coarsely ground. I like mine just meat, cheese, ketchup, and one of their house made vinegary pickles. The funny part (disturbing) is that I always order it with cheese and pickle only, and they always bring it with lettuce, tomato, onion etc. I even commented to the bartender last night that I bet they will send it out with everything even though we ask them to omit. And, guess what...it came out with everything. Kinda funny when you consider that they always cook it perfectly medium rare to my specifications, but for years (literally) can't figure out how to omit ingredients. All in all, I say go eat one as it is a solid burger.

The Pastrami List 2014

"...have a slut or two as a palate clenser."

I assume you mean sandwiches from Egg Slut, and not the other kind, presumably found outside of the market?

Vegan Plate is now H.O.P.E.

Vegan Plate in Studio City is now HOPE, which stands for Healthy, Organic, Positive, Eating...but for this crowd (myself included), probably opinionated eating. Literally, the last dozen times I have gone to this place, I order the Kale/Quinoa salad that features curried quinoa, raw kale, slivered almonds, bits of butternut squash, shaved beets, onion, lemon, and peanut sauce.

This last trip, however, I ordered said Kale/Quinoa salad AND their pumpkin curry with fresh made to order, whole wheat roti. AWESOME! It was so good, I forgot to take a picture. Some young, very nice, Thai Women are the owners, and they run an impressive place with high quality food. It's in the same strip mall (ironically) with LA LA's. There is free valet parking.

L.A. Dish of the Month, January 2015 -- CHILI

Went to Jinky's Sherman Oaks this morning and had their "Garlic Lovers" chili folded up in an omelet. Of all of the many flavors I have tried there, this one was, just garlicy, and didn't have much going for it. they feature 5 different chili's every day, and even have a large chili menu. There was some connection previously to the now defunct Chili my Soul. Anyway, there is always a good selection with or with out beans, and always a least one veg.

Anywhere in Los Angeles to buy frozen Gougères ( French cheese pastry puff) ?

IMHO, this is an item best served hot out of the oven. May I suggest Gruyère cheese from Trader Joe's, cutting the corner off of a larger zip lock bag, and this recipe:

http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/foo...

I know tyou want to buy them, but I have had so much fun making these, I thought that I would encourage you. They are very easy! Enjoy!

BBQ Brisket Alert

Over the Thanksgiving Holiday, I went into the huge Whole Foods on Arroyo Pkwy in Pasadena, and sampled some sublime and expertly prepared BBQ Brisket. It was the bomb!!! While my heart still belongs to Kevin Bludso's place in Compton (newly remodeled and enlarged, btw), and I regularly frequent Phillip's, I can say that this brisket is not to be missed! They have other smoked meats too, but I only sampled the brisket. Keep in mind that this in not an offering at all Whole foods stores, only the larger footprint ones, and then not all of them. Run don't walk...

Best pecan pie in LA?

If I may make a suggestion. When I think of a best in class item, 2 products come to mind, that are a universe better than anything else:

1. brazos bottom pecan pie from goode company. Available by mail order http://www.goodecompany.com/brazos-bo...

2. Enstroms Almond Toffee http://www.enstrom.com/almond+toffee/...

True, they are not in LA, but you will thank me later.

La Cava Sherman oaks...anyone been recently?

OK, went last night with two friends. I was pleasantly surprised. It is a dark intimate type of place that was totally full by the time we left. Be forewarned, it is small and LOUD.

We shared a cheese pizza to start. My friend an I both had the lamb chops medium rare with mashed potatoes and spinach. His wife had a salad with shrimp.

The meat was well cooked and seasoned. It was a well executed plate of food. Every other table had good looking, good smelling, dishes.

I would like to return and try some of the pasta. $148 + tip for 3, only one of us was drinking.
