You would have a hard time finding _________in Los Angeles...
I grew up going to Brennans in Houston and Commanders Palace in New Orleans, to eat their turtle soup. The chowhound who suggested Brennans Jazz Kitchen in Anaheim was on the right track, except that I would have to go to Disneyland...and that ain't happening. So, I am looking for a dark brown, dark roux style turtle soup dish, thicker than soup, but thinner than gumbo, more like the consistency of etoufee, with some cajun flava.
Off the Beaten Path Breakfasts
you speaketh the truth wienermobile, AMEN!!! Life at breakfast begins and ends with 49ers and Dutch Baby's and it is no secret.
I have never, ever, had a bad meal at ____________and I have eaten there over a dozen times!
I have never, ever, had a bad meal at the Original Pancake House and I have eaten there over a dozen times. Seriously, I have been going there for years and have eaten my way through at least 1/2 to 3/4's of the menu and it is awesome. The food is good, the service is good, the value is good. They know what they are doing!
So, the rules are simple:
1. You have never, ever had a bad meal there...and
2. You have eaten at this place over a dozen times. (and...RECENTLY)
No, I had a good dish there, or this place used to be great, or it's usually pretty decent, or historically it has been good but I haven't been there in a while, or my friend likes it...
OK, everyone, here we go...
I have never, ever had a bad meal at ______________ and I have eaten there over a dozen times!
Lazy Ox previously great, last night disappointing
I am a fan of the Lazy Ox Canteen, and up until last night, only had positive things to say. However, it seems like while the waitstaff is the same, many if not most of the kitchen staff has left to help start Baco Mercat. This is my assumption anyway since the food was not up to usual standards. Here is the chow:
We started off with Salpicon ($15) which is a type of ceviche. Made with yellowtail, this plate was flavored by guajillo chile sauce, oranges, and celery. Delicately prepared, it was very tasty.
Our next dish was a tempura artichoke ($8) which was actually two small pieces of the artichoke heart, deep fried, and served with lemon aioli. The batter was very un-tempura-like and greasy. I would not recommend.
New to the menu was a dish called Huevo Arzak ($16) which is kind of hard to describe. Picture a poached egg on top of warmed machego cheese, on top of small pieces of bacon, on top of something potato gloppy, swimming in chorizo oil. Perfectly cooked poached egg but the rest of the dish was forgetable, dare I say ill conceived.
We also had Lazy Ox Fried Chicken ($9). Two small pieces (one white, one dark) of very tasty and expertly fried chicken on top of a basil hummus? The chicke tasted marinated, the skin well seasoned.
Next was their Cauliflower ($9) roasted with chile flakes, pine nuts, mint and same as usual, which is good.
We also had spaghetti squash ($12) which had butter, chives and pecorino. Not bad but not worth $12.
Our final dish was the Manilla Clams ($16) with chorizo, kale, and crispy potato cubes. Unlike must shellfish dishes where things just keep getting better as you go, I like this dish less and less with each bite. The potato cubes were not crispy but soggy, there was way too much chorizo, and the clams were over cooked.
With a glass of iced tea and one glass of wine, our bill was an even $100 + $8.75 tax + $20 tip = $128 out the door.
I should mention that the service was VERY good. We were given clean plates for each new dish, drinks were kept filled, and our server was well acquainted with the menu.
So...7 dishes...and we really only liked 3, 4 if you count the spaghetti squash. I expect more from LO. I have had much, much better, at LO. Hopefully in the future, the LO I knowwill return.
Dango Mochi & Mar Vista breakfast
I like it when they make em green with the salsa verde.
Awesome news for ramen lovers in the Valley!!
Was just in the Starbucks across the way this morning. Workers are still in the Ramen place. The sign says 4/1/12 opening
Best Knish?
I recently had a great knish appetizer comprised of three miniture knishes, each topped with gravlax and a bit of dilled creme fresh. Where you ask? Virbrato Jazz Grill in Bel Air.
Best resturant to eat corned beef and cabbage for lunch Saturday?
Any recs on where to eat corned beef and cabbage for lunch Satuday? Will travel...
Great croissant in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Noho, etc?
Yes, sorry.
La Galette Bakery, 15137 Ventura Blvd, next door to Shalom Printing.
Breakfast in Arcadia
I totally agree ipse! Last time I was at Julienne was the LAST time, they asked me if they could serve me my eggs scrambled since one of their cooks was having difficulty poaching an egg.
Gjelina?.......
If as a diner, someone is trying to change or recreate a dish, it is reasonable that they may not be accomadated. Yes I can vote with my feet and often do. If I am asking for my dressing on the side, or a little extra cheese on my burger...I don't think that rises to the level of fooling around with a chef's "interpretation" of a dish. And...IMHO...if someone is cheering on this behavior, then YES, I think they are silly. Mark my words, if you don't nip this stuff in the bud, next thing you will hear is your server telling you..."I'm sorry but the chef only prepares the meats welldone, so you can't have it medium rare."
Gjelina?.......
UNAMI burger won't give me extra cheese and green chilis on my burger. Black Market Liquor won't omit the polenta underneath the short rib. I could go on and on...really. So, I stopped going to UNAMI altogether and now I only drink at Black market Liquor. As for Gjelina, they probably don't have to change, so they won't. Really, though, the hounds that are cheering that they are "stickin' to their guns" sound sort of silly when someone just wants their dressing on the side. To each their own.
Good breakfast but bad coffee, Bad breakfast but good coffee, Good breakfast and good coffee
Hounds:
You would think that a good breaksfast and good coffee were a given; if you could do one right, surely you could do the other one right too? Not so...
Let's see what you got. I will go first...
GB+ BC = Square One...love me some french toast but hate their acidic coffee.
BB+ GC = King's Road Cafe...their made to order coffee is awesome but their food sucks.
and...
GB + GC = a tie between Pacific Dining Car and Original Pancake House...two places that I have been to countless times and have always had good breakfast and good coffee...without exception.
Your turn!
elements pasadena closed
original small location = tiny and overpriced, 2nd bigger location = large and overpriced! I remember the original offering a serviceable breakfast with a good biscut. The larger Playhouse location only got my money once, and a lot of it, but funny how I don't remember a single thing I had. Good riddence...
REVIEW w/ pics: Dinner at Lazy Ox Canteen
Agree, Agree, Agree...
Recently had a good meal myself: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/822380
french chocolate silk pie.
Coles downtown...they call it chocolate cream pie, but believe me, it is bitter sweet, oreo crust, and blows MC's version out of the water
Great croissant in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Noho, etc?
Shalom Bakery has EXTRAORDINARY croissants baked fresh daily in very small batches. They come in five varieties: plain, chocolate, cheese, ham and cheese, thyme. The thyme is savory. My favorite is a tie between the chocolate and the cheese. High quality!
They are located 1 block from the corner of Sepulveda and Ventura on Ventura Blvd, opposte side of the street from Romans.
Looking for a great Whiskey Sour

Yummy Dinner at Lazy Ox Canteen
We ended up being 45 minutes late for our reservation but with a phone call ahead to warn of our delay, they held our table. It is always difficult to choose what to order at Lazy Ox because there are so many chalkboard specials (small plates) and they are always changing. Great glass of Pinot Noir to start and then...For appetizers we chose:
Carmelized cauliflower with chile, mint, pine nuts: great garlic flavor, cooked just past al dente +
Soft poached egg with cured lemon, quinoa and crispy pork belly: there is a mad scientist in that kitchen and he knows what he is doing. A perfectly poached egg on top of perfectly cooked quinoa, perfectly crisp pork belly, and tart lemon flavor to cut through all of the perfectness. In a word: PERFECT! I wanted to lick the plate. Our mains:
7 oz Lazy Ox Burger: A nicely medium rare cooked burger, toasted bun, cantal cheese, whole grain mustard, and a yummy aioli. The fries were thick, piping hot, and laced with dill. I like this burger and have had it many times before. Always good beefy flavor. We also had...
Milk braised veal breast: I can't suggest this enough. The pre-soaking of the breast in milk makes it oh so tender after cooking. If you like veal, this is it, nice, thick, and tasty. Topped with a veal reduction, it was served with sliced mushrooms with just a little sherry, creamy polenta, a bit of sauteed kale, and some snap peas. I returned an empty plate and urged the waitress to offer to everyone.
Dessert was butterscotch pudding with carmel sauce and creme fresh. Not as good as the Mozza budino version but still very good. A little french press coffee from LA Mill and viola! Great atmosphere and prompt attentive service like always...$83 before tip. BOO YAH!

Short Order, Long Price
IMHO there is no such thing as an expensive good meal, only an expensive bad one! Value is a relative thing. I don't find it shocking that a higher end burger is $13 or a steakhosue steak is $40. I will give it a try for sure since I no longer patronize Unami.
Where's all the good ice cream at?
Go to Bulgarini in Altadena and you will never eat icecream again. Totally worth the drive.
Best Coffee Cake in LA?
The stuff at Susina Bakery reminds me of good Jewish Babka. Funny, I discovered it at Jar too!
