Rice - How did you experience it today?
As onigiri--cooked Japanese rice filled with umeboshi (pickled plum) made into triangles (by salted hands) and wrapped in nori seaweed. YUM!
Smoked eels?
The German Gourmet in Fairfax also has them. Also try the Russian stores--Euro Gourmet in Rockville may carry them.
Glutinous rice
The texture of glutinous rice is really different than normal short grain rice... much softer and stickier. If you don't mind the texture being different, you can use sushi rice, but the authentic version definitely uses the glutinous rice.
Need Asparagus Recipe Help
Oven roasted for about 15-20 minutes at 400 with just a drizzle of olive oil and some lemon zest, salt and pepper is lovely.
Royal Mile Pub Wheaton, I heard that it is re-opened?
Had brunch there on Sunday. The food is the same--high quality overall and the portion sizes seems to be a bit larger. A bit of an older crowd than what I remember, but brunch is often like that. The smaller Scotch selection is due to the MoCo DLC making fewer scotches available. The new owners seem really nice and the place is the cleanest it's ever been, but to me something just seems to be missing. I miss the grungy, familiar place where everyone recognized you when you walked in...
"Japanese Ramen and Chinese Noodles" Pop-Up Restaurant in Columbia Heights
I think we need to clarify: Tonkatsu is a breaded, deep fried pork cutlet, usually served with shredded cabbage. TonkOtsu is a broth made out of pork bones.
Banh Mi in Rockville, Md. area?
Thanks, rcooperman--excited to try this new place :)

What's For Dinner? part #107 [old]
Seared scallops atop creamed cauliflower puree. (Cauliflower cooked in cream, seasoned to tasted, and spun in a blender).
Italian Prune Plums - Did I miss the season?
Shoppers Food Warehouse in Rockville has them as well.
Island Hut in Wheaton
We had dinner there on Saturday night--it was yummy. Hubby had the curried goat, which was outstanding--buttery meat, flavorful sauce. Cabbage and rice also tasty. I had the curried shrimp, which I enjoyed as well. It's a casual place with friendly service and the food is definitely made with care. This place is definitely also going to be on our carry out list.
Smith Island Cakes for sale in Baltimore area?
Dobos torte is NOT yellow cake--far from it. It's made with an egg and flour batter that is baked in very thin layers and then layered with chocolate buttercream and topped with a hardened amber sugar layer.
foods you ate as a kid (or young adult) that you wouldn't eat now?
Watermelon slathered with Nutella.
Asian grocery store in District?
Hana Market by U and 17th has a lot of Japanese products. They get veggie deliveries on Thursdays.
Quinoa in a rice cooker?
I do it all the time--I use the same proportions as for rice and it works well.
Authentic Japanese
Temari is great for Japanese comfort food (ebi fry, katsu kare, etc.). I love Sushi Taro for lunch--authentic and very fresh.

New Kam Fong, University & Elkins in Wheaton
Grab a quick dinner again at NKF last night and loved it. We shared the sizzling lamb (the meat had real lamb flavor!) and the deep fried tofu stuffed with shrimp (served with a sauce). Both were lovely. The staff was great and this place is really starting to become a regular haunt.
Ren's Ramen, Bethesda
We had a nice dinner there last night. I had the shouyu ramen, husband had the miso one. We ordered gyoza but no additional stuff for the ramen and were happy with what we got. The noodles were great and the broth was rich and flavorful. Definitely the best ramen in town.
Fresh Goggonzola and Walnut Stuffed Tortellini
Try this--very simple: cream and walnuts http://www.giovanniranausa.com/Recipes/GorgonzolaWalnutTortelloniWithCream.php
Sushi Taro - utter disappointment
Finally went for lunch at Sushi Taro and WOW! I have not had fish that fresh in years. We started off with grilled eggplant and octopus sunomono and ordered the sushi Mori--a nice assortment plate (tuna, salmon, shrimp, squid, a tekka roll, and mackerel)--just wonderful. Beautiful presentation and the taste made up for years of sketchy sushi in DC. Top grade stuff--head and shoulders above what they used to serve. They have a daily lunch special (fried oysters today) but we wanted to try the sushi and were NOT disappointed. Prices a bit higher, but worth every penny. Beautiful space with great attention to detail. The restaurant was full and for good reason.
Best Burger in Vancouver - what's your vote?
What's the story with Vera's? My college job was at the original Vera's (at the time just called Dundarave Beach concession stand) in West Van and was surprised to see all the Vera's around town when I came back to visit last year...

Monday dinner in Wheaton/Silver Spring
Love Royal Mile! Great food and fun atmosphere.
Sushi in Dupont
Not sure about the boxes, but I think they now have "specials" like they used to on the trays--basically different things the chef chooses on a daily basis.
Sushi in Dupont
Sushi taro is really the only good place in the Dupont area. They've brought back some lunch special items in order to win back former lunch customers.
