6/26/11 Mixx Fro Yo Closed Temp'ly for Fire Next Door, Allston

On my way home last night I saw a sign posted on their front door that said they were going to reopen today. I might have to grab one after dinner tonight. Lucky me - I live right around the corner from Mixx!

Bon chon

Walking through Allston last night I saw a Bon Chon sign going up at the space that was occupied by the resturant Toki on Brighton Ave. I noticed that Toki looked like it was closed the other day.

Fish Store

You're thinking of Habanero, which is going into the space that was once Eats and Treats at 166 Brighton Ave.

Non-corn syrup cola with caffeine?

Boylan's makes several cane sugar sweetened sodas including a cola with caffeine. I have purchased it at the Golden Goose Market on Commercial Street in the North End/Waterfront section of town.

Kolache's

Maybe I should complete the trend and ask about finding good chicken fried steak in the area complete with the proper kind of gravy on top?!

Marty's Liquors in Allston is closing

Seriously, it is a neighborhood with a large student population. While Blanchard's will do just fine for liquor purchases, I'll miss Marty's deli with it's tasty sandwiches and selection of gourmet food. Is the other location T accessible? Is the Martignetti's on Soldiers Field Road related to the one that used to be in the North End?

Green's Gluten-Free Beer available anywhere?

Also try Blanchard's Liquors in Allston. I know someone who has Celiac disease and they have purchased gluten-free beer there.

CI chewy chocolate chip cookie recipe question

I'm planning to bake these for my boyfriend's birthday. He really likes his chocolate chip cookies chewy rather than crispy. Has anyone ever made the dough for these cookies and let it chill overnight before baking? Did it affect the texture? Can I just chill the dough in the bowl? Thanks in advance.

D'Parma in the N. End

No, it is not. Try Antico Forno on Salem St. I think that would work for you.

paesans???

I have no idea how good it is, however I do live in the North End and I am sure that the curiosity will get to me eventually and I'll try it. The name does make me cringe.

Trattoria Toscana - not impressed

Perhaps I am reading this wrong, but are you saying there are no red sauces in Italian (vs. Italian-American) cuisine? (Yes, I realize that Italian cuisine is divided into distinct regional styles)

While I understand and agree with wanting servers that understand food, I think wanting servers that speak Italian in the USA is asking for a bit much. Good help is hard to find and keep in the industry as it is.

Spring 2008 openings and closings

Nope. I live in the North End and I am heartbroken. AFAIK, La Volle Nolle is still open. When I want sandwich, Italian or otherwise, I would be more likely to walk over to J. Pace & Son than go to Finale. But that's just me.

Done Eating, Not Dining

Dear Abby wrote about this in column of hers. ( I can't remember when, seems like it was within the past year) Apparently, she got extensive mail in favor of both. It seems a no-win situation for servers. Either way someone is going to be unhappy. Despite what Helena thinks, plenty of nice people would rather not have their plate sit in front of them. It has nothing to do with not enjoying the company of one's dining companions. While I am usually not bothered by Helena's missteps, her implication that those who want their plate removed when they are finished eating are rude and inconsiderate really annoys me.

Spring 2008 openings and closings

Not only that - but the North End!? There are plenty of dessert options in the neighborhood. I guess not everyone is interested in cannoli, tiramisu, or gelato. But still, why would you get dessert in the North End at Finale? I was sad to see Martignetti's go. IMHO, having Finale open there doesn't really add to the neighborhood. Especially if Dairy Fresh is not going to reopen. Does anyone know anything about that?

Can Restaurants Overpower Online Food Reviews?

This makes me very uncomfortable as a CH reader. Something tells me that these firms would be creative and think up ways to try and escape this site's "shill detectors". I know many people who rely on CH, Citysearch, Yelp, and other sites more than reviews in standard media formats. That being said I would be more likely to come to CH and search the boards for mentions of a restaurant rather than just using google. So I guess search engine optimization wouldn't really be a factor for me.

Comfy Clothes and White Tablecloths

"Maybe a bit too somber for something as festive as the Oscars, but better than Bjork!"

Or Cher.

I will admit to being quite slovenly with regard to dress during a time in college. I went to a private school with a strict dress code. After years of collared shirts, dress pants and/or knee length skirts, I was overcompensating. Ironing was evil. I wore pajama pants to classes, even in the afternoon. I realized finally that look wasn't cute, but rather made me look like a slob. It helped that due to in a change in minor, I enrolled in a class filled with guys and well, the desire to attract the opposite sex overruled any tendencies towards laziness.
I love dressing up to go out. Even if a place allows jeans, putting on a nice blouse and jewelry with good shoes lends an air festiveness. Kind of like the old custom of changing for dinner.

Sugar-Free Life

No Bread. No Wine. No Way. I'd only try this if instructed by my physician that my life depended on it.

Even my low-carb friends can drink a glass or two of red wine.

Chocolate Guinness Cupcakes

I've made a somewhat similar recipe for Guinness cupcakes - I think I'll try this one next time. I suggest using Bailey's instead of some or all of the heavy cream in the icing.

Texas Queso Dip

With all due respect, I spent a dozen years in Texas and this is not what I remember. Queso dip in Texas is Rotel and Velveeta. I realize that Velveeta is an ingredient that will inspire much loathing among many Chowhounds. But that is what I remember being served.

Incensed with Whole Foods: Enough Incompetence!

I just reread the thread and my original reply doesn't make sense. I thought that the marscpone was spoiled and past its expiration date when the OP puchased it. Clearly I should not be posting before getting my morning java fix. The shrimp thing I agree with everyone else - it is not something you should be able to return.

I now understand the fuss about Fage...

I found Liberte when I went to buy more Fage last night at the Golden Goose Market in the North End of Boston. I literally squealed with delight upon finding a container of 2% Fage with honey! Especially since it was the last one. I purchased some of both and will be comparing the two brands this weekend. I think they are going to start referring to me as Yogurt Girl at that store.

Incensed with Whole Foods: Enough Incompetence!

I would still have complained to the store. Clearly they need to be more proactive about removing perishables that are past their expiration date from the shelves. Which location was this? Have you had poor experiences at other WF? This just illustrates one of the main reasons why I prefer TJ's over WF - the TJ no hassle return policy.

Actually, I've heard that ketchup on Kraft macaroni and cheese is common in Canada.

I just ate my first ever container of Fage yogurt.

OH. MY. GOD.

That stuff is freaking amazing!

I will be going to the grocery store right after work. Must buy more. Kallis33 has gone Fage and she's not going back!
