Joe Tecce's Ristorante

A friend worked there one winter and reported this place serves squealing "veal." I'll never spend a dime in such a place.

FAT TIRE BEER

With the weird laws, I'm not sure it's even legal to have it shipped here? That leaves your options as either homebrewing a clone or having an out-of-state pal smuggle you some.

I've never understood why places like Sunset put up neon signs for beers they don't/can't carry?

Also, I've noticed that New Belgium is advertising in magazines and Fat Tire is becoming available in more areas... so maybe it will be creeping closer to MA?

I have a gift card for Legal's and...

I'm wondering which one to go to (Boston/Cambridge locations only)?

I swear at some point, I've read on this board which outlet(s) of Legal's was recommended but all I can find via searching the board are folks suggesting alternatives to Legal's, the history of how Legal's used to be great, etc...

Sunset Grill

Out of curiosity, what would you say is great there? I live very close to Sunset and want to like it but I've never had anything there which I would rush to eat again.

I'm well aware of the opinions on the taps but I've never had to send a beer back. As for food, I'd say it's bad to average at best. What should I try to change that opinion?

Breakfast sausage

Yup, and it was damn tasty... sorry you did get any. I've had sausage before in Sept & Nov but this was the first time I got Breakfast Sausage.

Aiden mentioned that they had some neighbors help putting the shares together, so maybe you can blame them : )

Breakfast for dinner again tonight!

Breakfast sausage

As a member of Stillman's meat CSA, I was pleasantly surprised to find what I think you're looking for in my last share. Maybe someone else here can chime in as to whether Stillman's has them at the farmer's market?

Freshly Made Corned Beef in the Boston Area?

Shaw's (at least the Allston location) carried Pearl's Gray Corned Beef this year too (in very limited quantities).

Best Morning Pint

Not the best pint by any means (actually I don't think they even have pints glasses) but Pour House is open at 8.

Meyers+Chang? What's the Word?

Brilliant post hW... the comparisons do need to end. Perfect example with the Tiger Tears - M+C isn't just a trendy spot, they use fresh ingredients well and charge appropriately. In Chinatown, you get what you pay for: no frills, authentic grub.

Coming Soon - Double Shabu Shabu in Allston

FYI for all: Toki is now open. I'd go and post a report but I can barely afford to eat at home right now, so dinning out isn't an idea I should even entertain. To anyone who does go, can you report if they have a vegetarian broth option?

B. Good coming to Brookline

Funny you should mention Boloco - when I found out that B Good was linked to Boloco, I gave up any desire to give it a try. The comments here have confirmed my suspicions.

Liquor store with good selection of bourbons

I second Blanchard's in Allston. It's one of the few places I've found Eagle Rare 17 year (a favorite), though it's not always there. Marty's in Allston also seems to have a decent selection but the few times I tried to browse their selection, I was annoyed by an over zealous employee (which never happens when I buy beers there, go figure).

Info about Stillman's farm Meat CSA in JP?

Veronica (or anyone else picking up in JP),

Did you have your first pickup? If so, what did you get and have you tried anything yet?

Lobster roll at Charlie's Kitchen in Cambridge -- a report

I might be wrong on this but I think it might be because those huge glasses kept breaking.

Chowhound-Worthy Dives in Boston Proper

Is the Prez in Quincy Center still open/there? That was a pretty good dive bar but I don't recall any food? I always ate around the corner at Darby's (decent food) which was divey Sun-Thurs but lame on Fri & Sat.

Chowhound-Worthy Dives in Boston Proper

I wouldn't call it a dive at all. Also, unless the food has drastically improved in the last year or so, I'm going to have to disagree on it being good. Food and service is so bad there that I refuse to go anymore (even though it was a regular post-work hangout due to location). Happy hour food prices may be nice but I don't even want to pay that little for what I've had there... I'm much happier walking to Buk's, Pour House, or even Other Side than having the clueless waitress of the week not realize that she can make a ton of dough if she can remember to take regular drink orders.

Info about Stillman's farm Meat CSA in JP?

I signed up for this too and was getting a bit worried until I just got an email from them. The first JP pick-up is 7/21 @ Bank of America parking lot between 12-3. The email was just sent out yesterday (7/8), so maybe check whichever email account you gave them first?

Also, I should add that they mentioned having a few shares still available for this and there are alternative pick-ups in Brookline or Lunenburg.

Is Yeungling for sale anywhere near Boston?

Yeah, it's DEFINITELY not sold here and any bottles being recycled are likely from NY or elsewhere.

As for anyone thinking s/he is seeing it in a store, maybe it's Narragansett that's causing the confusion - it causes a second take on occassion for me.

Buying Beer as a Gift

Excellent point... perhaps if you let us know which beer(s) he usually drinks you'll get the most useful suggestions.

I'd add Allagash White to aventinus's list and maybe subtract the IPA suggestion (I love IPAs but many of my friends do not).

Fried Oysters at Redbones

It might be an immediate neighborhood type thing (I could hit Redbones with a rock from my front door then) but it doesn't hurt to ask. They even honored this when I got together with maybe 8-12 college friends one night.

Fried Oysters at Redbones

Depending upon where you live in Davis (and if they even do this anymore), you should check with Redbones to see if you can get a neighborhood discount card. They offered this when I lived there over a year ago. If I recall correctly, it was 20% off of food but not booze : (

South Shore help

For pizza go to Mamma Mia's in Kingston. Everyone has a place where their definition of pizza comes from and most people I know from the South Shore list this place. The Plymouth location may be nicer but the pizza is much better in the Kingston joint.

Minneapolis options?

I'll be in Minneapolis next weekend for work and I was wondering if there are any regional beers, brewpubs, or just good beer bars to check out while I'm in town? I'll be staying at the Millenium and will only have walking or short cabs rides for transportation options.

Lunch at Burritos on Fire, Allston

That's funny because the one and only time I went there the dude behind the counter was a little too flirty with my GF to my liking. I'd much rather go to La Mamma where they're always very friendly and polite.

Also, the burrito I had from BoF wasn't any better than anything one can get at Anna's (which I know some people rave about Anna's but I find their meats very bland).

Help me decide in Allston!

It's impossible that you're as scatter-brained as I am but if you only have a mental list versus an actual list of places in the neighborhood, I'd go with May's. When I'm sitting here at a computer with no money or plans to go out, I can always remember that place... but when my GF shows up and asks where we should go, May's is caught in a cobweb in one of the myriad empty spots of my mind.

Moving to Boston

Very true and I meant to post that and forgot to (oh, all those lost brain cells). I haven't had a car in years and try to consistently remind myself that most people do. Rockpile may be using the T to check places out but that may not be the case when s/he resides here. Taking a cab to Eastie completely sucks and I hated having to make a decision to leave a show early to catch the last T or not.

Moving to Boston

I don't think you'll get flamed for that. I've lived in Eastie and loved it, though I recognized that it's definitely not for everyone. The girl I lived with did not share my love of the neighborhood nor did she always feel safe alone (and she isn't from lily white suburbia). I know nothing about rockpile but I'd suggest s/he make both day and night trips to each prospective neighborhood to form his/her own opinion.

For food in Eastie you can get a good primer of the neighborhood by doing a taqueria crawl or maybe make the walk to Santarpio's for some pizza & BBQ. Either suggestion might also help form your opinion of Eastie in general.

Indian buffet suggestions?

What makes it even harder is that we spend most of our time in Allston, where CH approved Indian places seem to be opening every other month! More of an actual deal breaker is the fact that she can't cook at all (I seem to have really bad luck with this) but she puts up with a lot of my crap, laughs more often than not at my bizarro sense of humor, and really appreciates when I cook for us, so she's a keeper for now : )

I've never been to TB (nor am I super knowledgable of Indian food); so I guess I'm trying to figure out if she finds something(s) she'll like at their buffet, will we be able to find that on the menu at other places around town?

Indian buffet suggestions?

Thanks for the heads up... thankfully she does eat dairy (which makes my attempts to cook for us a lot easier -- esp as I'm already pushing my limited skills enough, adjusting from meat based meals to vegetarian friendly meals).

Indian buffet suggestions?

Okay, so I face the challenge of dating a vegetarian who is 95% sure she doesn't like Indian food but is willing to give it one last try to confirm this. We decided that maybe the best idea would be to go to a lunch buffet, so she could sample several different options (and maybe discover something she actually likes). I know buffets generally aren't the best representation of any type of food but I was wondering which buffets fellow hounds would recommend? I'm leaning towards Namaskar in Davis (which would be close to where we'll be and my memories from when I lived in Davis are that Namaskar was better than Diva, though I can't remember if that applied to the buffet too) or Tamarind Bay in Harvard (which I fear may not represent what she can expect to find at most Indian restaurants?).
