Grace in the Kitchen/Serious Cheese Ottawa
Great news for west end Ottawa, bad news for the perpetually under construction South end....
Grace in the Kitchen and their sister store Serious Cheese are moving to Kanata! Im so excited! No more trekking accross the city to find no parking, they are going to be accessible, with both stores under one roof.
I just saw the news on their website. Happy Day!!!

Does anyone drink skim MILK - what brand are you buying?
I prefer Natrel hands down, dont buy it since my hubby came into the picture though, he drinks milk by the bucketful, and I cant afford it consumed in such volumes. :(
ottawa
Count me in, I left the board years ago as there was little Ottawa action. Ottawa has really grown as a food town, give us a spot to talk please!
Pre-Christmas catering of Christmas dinner in Ottawa?
theres a number of places doing it this year, I think it was listed in the Citizen last weekend, but the ones I remember were Brookstreet Hotel, Thyme and Again, Tulips and Maple, and the Red Apron, theyll set you up with the entire meal, you pick it up and its done, I believe the last 3 will take care of you at home too, but it might be too late to book that
Looking for high end Sunday brunch place
On the off chance you arent in Toronto, try the brunch at Perspectives restaurant in the Brooksterrt hotel in Ottawa. It has everything and has never diappointed us or the groups weve brought there, including a group of 40 a few weeks ago, service, quality, variety, its all there.
Lakefield local food tour
Im assuming youve been to the Ptbo farmers market? One of the best Ive ever attended, wish I had appreciated it more when I lived there! As you said, the season is still early, bur become a regular, get to know the vendors, they are stunnongly well connected, in fact bring a pen and paper for note-taking!
Ottawa - unique hidden gems
Life of Pie on Leonard St in the South end of town, a tiny little storefront operation, she posts the weeks pics on email to her subscribers, but can do walk in on a small scale, cash or cheque only. Makes a to die for Strawberry-custard pie, but anything Ive had from there is wonderful.
A couple of broad Ottawa Q's
you can get Montreal Bagels at 2 places I can think of, first choice would be the Ottawa Bagleshop (Wellington St near Island Park) or Farm Boy they have numerous stores in the region.
Black Forest Cake in Ottawa
Still pinning down the name of the lady in Stittsville, Hubby did get the cake there and it was wonderful, bad news is (for me) shes moving to Toronto! Ill be sure to get her info to share here.
Black Forest Cake in Ottawa
I had Swiss Pastries BF cake last year, as part of my ongoing quest for BF cake, it was very disappointing, cheap filling, not real kirsch, and the cream was runny. So far, the best Ive had in since I got back to Ottawa came from Costco. Hubby found a new scratch baker, in Stittsville, well be trying that one out. We even tried to get one from Peterborough, seems Sticklings (German Baker) no longer makes it. Will report back on tomorrows cake.
Black Forest Cake in Ottawa
Im hoping for some recommendations, as I have yet to find a decent one in town. Thanks in advance
in seek of --> lemon stilton at reasonable prices
hmmm my reply diddnt appear, apologies in advance if this comes up twice.
Im not a fan of the blue stiltons, I love my sharp cheeses, just not those ones. As for the flavored ones, its really subjective, but Id suggest hunting for the ginger one, harder to find sadly, but very nice.
in seek of --> lemon stilton at reasonable prices
they are all so different with their unique flavorings, its really subjective, I love the ginger one, tho its harder to find.
in seek of --> lemon stilton at reasonable prices
many options, made by Coombe Castle, english, lemons, pineapple, stem ginger, mango, these are dessert stiltons btw, not blues. Enjoy the hunt!
in seek of --> lemon stilton at reasonable prices
probably too late with my reply, but most boutique cheese stores in the GTA should have it, tho the supply is dwindling at this time of year, maybe you should try the other flavored stiltons out there, theres loads of options besides the Lemon one Loblaws lists.
Good quality grocery store in Ottawa?
Farm Boy is pretty good, and has great variety, I have to add though, Ive never been successful at buying a 10lb bag of potatoes there without half the bag being rotten, my fault in being too lazy to pick my own there I guess.
I dont know Thrifty's so cant compare, but you might try Produce Depot on Carling Avenue (near Maitland) great fresh departments, and they are working to round out their grocery department to a more gourmet/ethnic area, instead of trying to compete with Loblaws on the everyday items.
Truffle Oil - Peterborough
ya, its next to "Vander..." something fruit market, has an interlock front entrance if that helps. Do walk in, youll have trouble walking out again!
Truffle Oil - Peterborough
Zip on down to Herma's Fine Foods and Gifts on hwy 28, just north of the 401, tell her Karen from Ottawa sent you.
Apple Picking up North - Fenelon Falls, Bobcaygeon, etc.
Cant think of a single orchard that far north, youll have to head south toward Bowmanville for that kind of activity, instead, head north to Haliburton and try the sites up there for wolf treks and fall leaves.
Product requests at your Grocery store
One problem the chains have, is that they have to follow authorised listings, meaning that each chains head office must approve something before the store can order it, vendors must present and often pay "listing fees" to get approvals, most of the time the store has very little input into what is on the shelves if it is not in their approved list. That is why the true independants are so easily able to accomodate requests, and is why it is so important to "support the little guy", the independants are often responsible for the success or failure of the more obscure products out there, and when that new "obscure" product launches well, then the chains grab it, sell it for less than the little guy and hurt his business.
Ottawa - Where to Find Mexican Food Supplies
Have you tried Chilly Chilles? they used to have astore on Sussex, but I understand they may have consolidated to their warehouse store in Navan, I know they supply a number of speciality stores with their "hot" items.

Liquid smoke?
Liquid Smoke is one of those oddball items that most grocers carry, but never really has a set home on the shelf, areas to try include the ethnic cooking sauces, hot sauces, spices, and seafood section. Or ask the grocery manager where they have hidden it.
Thai in other Ontario cities
Sorry for the slow reply, I dont visit this board too often as it seems to be more relevant to Toronto, anyways, Sweet Basil is getting some great reviews, but has difficult hours and I have yet to get there when they are open. Will post if I ever get there.
Thai in other Ontario cities
If its Ottawa, then you must try Nokham, on Richmond Rd, small, and noisy, due to its being so busy, Ive always needed a reservation.
General Tso's Chicken
Try House of Bhudda in Georgetown, not so secret anymore, they always have wonderful food, including General Tso
Peterborough choweats
If you get to St Veronus, please let us know your thoughts, when I still lived in Ptbo (moved last year, still miss it) I attempted on numerous occasions to drop in or place a reservation, never was successful, on one of the occasions, I called ahead to inquire about some of the menu options for a conservative senior and was told that there was nothing on the menu he would like, no discussion of what was on the menu. Friends who had better success at getting in have recently commented that the menu has changed and aside from a few sig dishes, the menu was ininspired.
I do recommend Hot Belly Mamas on George St, not fine dining, but fun, tasty food, and a great atmosphere, lots of range in the menu pricing as well.
I second the congrats on a job out there, it is a lovely city, with huge potential that is slowly emerging.
Where to find chocolate cups in Toronto?
You can find Chocolux Cups at any grocery chain, try near the bakery, Fosen or Baking sections, they are belgian Chocolate and have a variety of formats.
Minden / Haliburton Rec's?
The name, tho still spelled wrong is more like Mckeks, its right on the Main Street in Downtown Haliburton. Ive also heard there is a great Thai place in Minden, I dont know the name, but how many Thai restaurants could Minden have?
where to get super hot sauces?
if you can, make the drive to Peterborough, and check out Firehouse Gourmet on Hunter St, they are all about the heat, and have samples of just about everything they sell.
