red sauce Italian near the Theater District- Trattoria Trecolori, Puttanesca or somewhere else?

We'll be in town the weekend before July 4th. Do you think we need reservations for places like Trecolori or Puttanesca? My family is rather averse to standing in lines...

Vancouver, Whistler, Salt Spring, Sechelt?

Salt Spring:
The Hasting's House is lovely, especially on a sunny day or evening. Get a drink and wander around the property for a bit before dinner (or brunch). Expensive but probably worth it.
House Piccolo is also wonderful and high end. Cute, with a Scandinavian vibe.

But please do consider an evening (or lunch) at Marketplace Cafe. It is really outstanding. More laid back.

Next door to it is an Italian pasta maker who sells excellent fresh pasta to cook at home but also has a few warm take-out items to eat in the park across the street. He can also make up great batch of lasagna to bake at home.

And if you're there on a Saturday, the weekly market is a combination of great and crappy crafts and fresh local fruit and vegetables and cheese. The goat cheese is famous, but the cow is my fave. Entertaining but crowded.

Have fun!

Happy National Salad Month!

This Glory Bowl (I think its since been renamed) is an awesome main dish salad, great dressing too:

Exhausted mom needs cook ahead meals for family or quick suppers for grab and go sports crazy kidss

Yup this time of year, we have games and practices all over the dinner hour, so a lot of these suggestions will be useful Another thing I do is cook some sort of meat or tofu ahead (baked tofu slices, chicken legs, salmon - anything that tastes good cold or nuked) and make a sturdy green salad and then when we get in its easy to throw dinner plates together with a piece of bread or pasta salad on the side. I love kale salad for this as it benefits form a bit of wilting.

Also quick breads jazzed up with whole grains and less sugar.

Source for dried puy lentils in Vancouver?

Did some research on Broadway this morning: the "Dan-D pack store" on Broadway and Stephens has them, both bulk conventional ($0.48/100 gr) and packaged organic French (0.68/100 gr.).

Source for dried puy lentils in Vancouver?

Not terrifically original, but I usually get them at the bulk place on Granville Island.

Smallish artichokes - what to do?

Thanks for this, I'm going to try. To confirm: if I use the small artichokes and am ruthless with the leaves, we can then eat the whole thing? Or are the tops of the leaves still stringy and the choke still prickly?

Smallish artichokes - what to do?

I'm used to preparing big globe artichokes but I am curious about the small ones I've been seeing in the market. They come about 10 to a box and are a little smaller that a tennis ball. Do they have spiney chokes, if so they would be quite labor intensive to prep, no? Are they worth the effort?

Huge leek harvest....HELP!!!

I like them steamed whole, or halved lengths wise if large, and with a mustardy vinaigrette poured on while still warm. Then chill, or not.

My Mom serves leeks sliced in a bechamel.

What to do with dry curd cottage cheese?

Sounds good. Do the curds remain visible in the finished product or do they melt into it?

Good food/chocolate/treats/snacks to bring on a plane for friend in another province?

Cocoa Nymph was the one I was going to recommend as well. The bonbons are great but I like the bars even better.
Have a hot chocolate with marshmallows while you're there....

Backup plan for Vij's?

Well if your tastebuds can adjust their expectations, I like Suika around the corner on Broadway for Japanese. There's also Memphis Blues for bbq, but I've not been and depending where you're from could disappoint.

What to do with dry curd cottage cheese?

I grabbed a large tub of this by accident and its kind of weird to eat plain. Are there any healthiesh recipes that use it?

Vancouver Restaurant Help (w/ baby)

Hmmmm.
Well one thing, folks either love or hate the Italian Kitchen and I am a hater. Beyond the food (yuck) it is too loud for my parents and kids (and me). I am however thinking of the 4th Avenue location, maybe downtown is better?

But now I have to think about what would be a good suggestion....
Basically I think you can take a baby anywhere if you go at 5:30 or 6 as long as it (resto not baby) isn't too loud. I'd certainly check out LR's suggestion of Griffin's. Maybe Adesso if you want Italian? Check out reviews though as I haven't been in its current incarnation. If you like Japanese, Kingyo would work and is very nice. If you want a beautiful place to sit on a sunny afternoon, try Bridges patio on Granville Island, not stellar food but good basics.
I'll keep thinking.

Does anyone know what these are called? And do you have a recipe for it?

They look a little like what Nigella Lawson calls brownies in her Kitchen book but with a different icing. Kids love them, but make them for a dinner party and cut them really small and adults devour. If you want them to look more like this I think you would add less rice crispies and add nuts.

ISO Easter Ham - not too smoky..not too salty..

Yay, we did another Swedish ham this year and it was great. 5kg. I did not bother with any kind of glaze or anything, just cooked for 5 hours. The only problem is that is was too darn big and we'll be eating it for years... Next year I'll get a half size : )

Too late for good hot cross buns this year but maybe next?

Grayelf, we had Pane e Formaggio's and they were very light and slightly soft. Bready not cakey. Not sure what other criteria are, but we enjoyed them. Not as expensive as some of their other items. Maybe $5 for 6? Oh and no icing so they went in the oven for a quick heat.

what do you buy at Whole Foods?

Raw kale salad, but now I make my own. Mmmmm.

Palm Springs: Johannes, purple Palm or??

Have to confess that in the end we went to neither! We realized it was a landmark birthday and chose Le Vallauris instead. I know I would have been very happy at either of our other choices but Vallauris exceeded very expectation. A fabulous evening. I had a tomato terrine followed by lobster ravioli in a bisque sauce with big chunks of lobster. Heaven. Hubby had buttery scallops and then venison with an amazing juniper sauce. We shared a perfect chocolate souffle which I must learn to make ASAP. Owner very gracious and lovely, waiter grumpy and professional, setting beautiful.

Palm Springs: Johannes, purple Palm or??

Hi, we're looking for a birthday dinner in PS. We've been to Johannes in previous years and always love it. So do we go back this year or try something else? Food, drinks and decor all count.
Thanks.

Need organic or jarred version of chipotle peppers in adobo.

You can get chipotle sauce/puree (kind of a ketchup consistency) in a small bottle. Its very hot and smokey. I like the very very dark brown one that comes in a bottle with a rooster on the label. Not organic though.

The Matchbox is still good in Palm Springs

We go there every time we visit as well. Sometimes with kids, sometimes without. Always fun. Glad to hear its still good!

Retirement dinner ideas needed

I'm happy to hear Adesso is working out. I haven't been, but am always so fond of that location (so then why haven't we been yet, hmmmm?).

Is good food and a view possible in Vancouver?

Someone on this board mentioned Teahouse in Stanley Park not too long ago. Anyone been recently? Seems like a place the older set might enjoy?

Dinner tonight ... hot dogs or hamburgers ...

Choucroute Garni can be made with just wieners (although some bacon is good too). Sauerkraut, onions, boiled potatoes (or mash). Yum.
Here's an example but it needn't involve that many kinds of meat.
http://events.nytimes.com/recipes/5355/2005/01/05/Choucroute-Garnie/recipe.html

A raw broccoli dish has changed my life. Broccoli ceviche, if you will.

I made this for dinner tonight based on your post and it was great. I only used 1/4 cup oil but all the other ingredients as posted and let it sit for 5 hours. So good. Thank you.

Help with Tartar Sauce

I just made some for tonight and for me tartar sauce has to have tarragon or at the very least cornichons which I guess are pretty tarragonny. Also capers, greens onion and parsley. I do half mayo half yogurt/sour ream but I know that's controversial.... So its fairly similar to the one mentioned above in Fish Without a Doubt.

Real Japanese Restaurants in Vancouver?

I'm not real Japanese, but real Japanese friends consider these (presumably among others) to pass the realness test:
Dinner with friends: Dan, Suika, Miku
Dinner with clients: Suika and Miku
Dinner w/drinking friends/clients: Suika
Ladies who lunch: Sanpachi and Miku.
Take-out with kids: Hitoe
Special family dinner out: Miku, En

I would add Zest, but not sure if its real : )

Sushi around UBC

Tried Tokyo Thyme this evening with one of the kids and we both really enjoyed it - thanks for the rec. I think it will be our new goto.

Busy parent Meals

I hesitated for quite some time before getting one but then saw one that had interchangeable plates for making waffles and decided to go for it! We use it several times a week. I keep meaning to make an extra batch of waffles for the freezer for quick toaster meals but that hasn't happened yet...
