3 days in SF, non-fine dining experiences needed for this weekend
Ceekskat,
Unfortunately we went to all the tourist areas and ate at those locations. Food, as you would guess, was subpar at those locations.
3 days in SF, non-fine dining experiences needed for this weekend
Thank you guys for all the excellent recommendations so far!!
How about any breakfast recommendations?
3 days in SF, non-fine dining experiences needed for this weekend
This will be our third time to SF and I am looking for establishments that are:
Not Mexican
Not Vietnamese
Not BBQ
Not Fine Dining
Do not require reservations
Not tourist traps
I will be renting a car while we am staying in SF, so traveling to different areas of SF is not a problem. All other ethnic types of food are game. Hole-in-the-wall places are game as well. Don't let me down hounds :)
Dallas Desserts
The mangonada at Paleteria and Neveria Durango in Arlington. A mangonada is a fruit mango and ice mixture that is made in a shape of a popsicle using a plastic cup. At the bottom of the cup they usually put chamoy (a sweet/spicy sauce) along with lime and powdered chili/salt. I am hooked on this. The best part is, its only 1.75. I get this savory dessert three times a week if I can.
My favorite used to be the location on Jefferson close to I-35 but this one location, IMHO has better flavor.

Barbecue in Dallas?
Twin,
Smoke received 2 out of 5 stars from the Gospel. Apparently Twin, Smoke is not even average. There is no need to overhype this bbq establishment, it already is overhyped. Also, I was disappointed when you mentioned Sonny Bryans as one of your top bbq places here in Dallas. Sonny Bryans has not had average bbq in years.
Barbecue in Dallas?
LH, the Gospel BBQ blog is a great piece of information.
What would the central Texas bbq masters say about this place called Smoke? I bet they are at home laughing at this overpriced so called bbq with their many fancy sauces. I cannot say this enough, great bbq does NOT need all these sauces. Along with picking out good quality protein and mastering the art of smoking, you cannot compare these new kids on the block to the real bbq down in central Texas. For the hounds that have had central Texas bbq, how does Smoke compare to those establishments? That is the question....
"Smoke" Restaurant in Dallas?
If Smoke is giving Sonny Bryans a run for their money, that is not saying much about their bbq. Sonny Bryans has not had quality bbq in years. If their bbq is similar in flavor, then Im definitely waiting on trying this establishment. Lockhart, Luling, and Lexington are not too far of a drive for some great bbq.
Hounds, please stop comparing every bbq restaurant to Sonny Bryans. It's just like comparing every Mexican restaurant to Joe T. Garcias. Both are below average in the flavor of their food.
La Palapa Veracruzana? Where did it go????
As I make my usual trip to the OC once in a while, I was craving some Palapa Veracruzana. I drove down Jefferson about a week ago and realized that la Palapa has now sadly closed, like it was predicted a few months ago. Now stands in its replacement, Izabella's Cocina. I only drove by and did not try their food or asked any questions. It is truly sad to see this one go. This one was one of my favorites. If anyone else has anymore details on this please share.
How about Lito's? I have attempted to go there twice in the last couple of weeks and it was closed during open business hours? Is this establishment closed as well? Help!
DFW: Spanish Tapas and Olives??
On our recent trip to Spain, we had some wonderful tapas and olives along with some great sangria and wine. I would like some help finding the best current establishments that offer some of what we had in Spain. I am willing to travel. Also, if anyone can recommend a particular brand of Spanish olives from a grocery store or restaurant, it will be much appreciated. Don't let me down hounds!
The pictures are a small sample of all the tapas/olives we had.
DFW - Masaryk
About a month ago this new place opened up in Addison Circle offering modern Mexican dining. Their sister restaurant, La Margarita, is a more casual establishment in Irving, next to Irving Mall. They both offer a similar menu with a few additions at Masaryk. I have gone to Masaryk twice and both times, the food was very tasty. I have tried several dishes and my favorite entrees would have to be the salmon in banana leaves, camarones al mojo de ajo, and salmon masaryk. Their warm salsa and their queso fundido (melted chihuahua cheese with onions, poblano peppers, chorizo, and homemade toritillas) was very good. Wish the salsa was a little spicier and it would have been awesome. I didnt care much for the guacamole (lacked salt and lime) and the bacon wrapped shrimp was just average for me. We enjoy their margaritas (Metrosexual-somewhat strong) and for the ladies, the Pink Taco seems to be very popular at Masaryk. They also have an outside patio that was taken both times we have come. I will definitely be coming back to this place to try out more of their food. It seems that during Fridays and Saturdays it seems to be getting packed already. Anyone been here? Any thoughts?

Billadelphia's - An Authentic Philly Cheesesteak in DFW
It closed down? Cant believe it closed down. He was thinking it would pick up during football season last year but apparently I guess it did not. He was also hoping the new Cowboys stadium would bring in more business but I guess we wont find out. Sad to see this one leave. I will have to drive north for the other location.
Good Cajun
We have been to Boiling Crab (Walnut and Plano Rd.) several times and it just doesn't do it for us. They try to put so much crap (spices, butter, garlic..etc) on the crawfish when they serve it, you cant even taste the flavor of the crawfish. When we go, it seems that everyone there is very young and Asian. To top it off, we had 6 pounds of crawfish, 4 corns, some sausage, one beer and some tea. Total with tax came out to be a cool $69 dollars!!! I think they also charge for extra lime and salt if you order. Way too expensive to eat some mudbugs. Gona be going to New Orleans hopefully real soon and get me some good crawfish without feeling like I've been ripped off.
The Big Easy its the real deal. My favorite creole food around here. The flavor of most of their dishes are spot on. We enjoy the crawfish etouffee, seafood gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish po-boy, and even the onion rings were really nice and crunchy. Cant wait to head up north to pay them a visit.
Crab/ crawdad boil in or around dallas
Adairs in downtown Dallas is having a crawfish boil tomorrow. Apparently, its free from what it says in their website. Ive never been but they are very well known for their burgers. I will most likely check it out since Im in the crawfish mood this time of year.

DFW - Bo luc lac??
The SO and I lived in Houston for several years and one of our favorite Vietnamese restaurants was Chinos Fast Food, aka Hao Hao Mi Gia off Bellaire. They had the most flavorful and tender bo luc lac with tomato fried rice. I have tried several locations here in the DFW and it does not come close to Chinos. Need the help of the hounds again! Thanks in advance.
Fuel City Tacos
I agree LewisvilleHounder....
The original is actually called "La Paisanita". It started inside a supermarket on Maple and Lucas. A while back, they moved across the street where it now stands. "El Paisano" taqueria on Lombardy is in the same family of owners (sisters, I believe). I have to agree that El Paisano/La Paisanita has the best al pastor tacos around. Each taco is $1.15. Their green and red salsa for the tacos is also very good. The salsa for the tortilla chips is what puts it over the top. Its spicy, flavorful, and comes out warm, just like it should be. I have tried Fuel City tacos several times and it does not even come close to La Paisanita/El Paisano. Fuel City's salsa is very bland and not spicy at all.
New here from NYC...need help with the following:
Al pastor tacos at La Paisanita (Maple/Lucas) are the best around. Their red and green salsas are very good as well. I dont see what the big buzz is on Fuel City. Fuel City is not even in the same ballpark. I believe they dont even make their own salsa.
Where can I find the best Asian noodle soups in Dallas?
I have to agree on Song Huong in Arlington. This is one of the better bun bo hue I have had here in Dallas. If someone can think of others, please let me know. The bun bo hue is full of flavor and just the right amount of spice. We usually try to stop by every other week or so. The service here is very lacking but most Vietnamese restaurants are the same way. When we go to any Vietnamese restaurant we expect somewhat average to below average service, we have become accustomed to it. For this type of noodles, where most restaurants fall short of flavor, I can tolerate below average service so I can wake up my palate with its flavorful broth.
Wedding venues with tasty catered food?
I'm going to start checking some of these places out! I will give you guys some feedback...
Wedding venues with tasty catered food?
Our budget is between 35 - 50,000... Would that be considered moderate? We are thinking about 250 - 300 people attending. Thanks guys!!
Wedding venues with tasty catered food?
Hello Hounds! My lady and I recently got engaged and we were going to begin looking at wedding venues in the DFW area. We have a moderate budget and we wanted to know if any of you hounds have been part of or attended a really nice wedding venue with tasty catered food provided on site. At this time there is no preference on the kind of venue. Our wedding is set for October of 2009. I would really appreciate all your feedback. Thanks in advance!!
Best Chicken Dish/Fried Chicken/Rotisserie in D/FW
El Regio is really good. I have had the Irving location and the one close to SW Center Mall (Red Bird) on Camp Wisdom. I prefer the Red Bird location. They even have someone singing live on Saturdays during lunch.
pho in houston
+1 for Pho Saigon....There is also a tapicoa place next to it that is one of my favorites called Tropioca...really good regular milk teas...
Flavor, the best BYOB in Dallas?
I agree with a few of the ones listed above but one of my favorites is Oishii due to the resonable prices for sushi, Vietnamese and Chinese dishes.
Dallas hound coming to N.O. Show me where the food is at!
I am a virgin to New Orleans. Need some creole recs....I apologize for the confusion.
Dallas hound coming to N.O. Show me where the food is at!
I'm making my way to New Orleans this weekend and need some recommendations on some good cajun food....Dont give me any recommendations on any other type of food, unless it is way too good to pass up. Nothing too expensive either, please. What is a must try when I come down? Dont let me down hounds. Thanks in advance.
Arlington-Little Known Places
If you like Vietnamese and you like bun bo hue you might want to try Song Huong. Its a small restaurant located where Pho Palace is on Collins and Pioneer. That stuff hits the spot all the time.
Bistro B (DFW)
They have a Bodard in Houston as well. I believe the Houston location has been open for about 3 - 4 years. I asked one of the ladies that works at the Dallas location and she confirmed they are the same. I thought the food there was just ok but those crunchy rolls with the sauce were really good.
Arlington-Little Known Places
On Browning St. in between Pioneer and Arkansas...across a pizza place....I have to agree, Ba Le banh mi are all good...
Texas State Fair
Tried the Fletchers corny dog (with mustard) last night and thought it was just average. IMO, the corny dog it's NOT a must if you go to the fair. I also tried the pork chop sandwich, shrimp kabob, funnel cake, smoked turkey leg and pretzel and they were all better than the infamous corny dog.
