Baltimore snowballs in Escondido??

Their website requires flash, so I couldn't view it on my mobile device. I did check out the Yelp page on Baltimore Snowball, and the pictures looked intriguing.

San Diego New Places Opening Thread Numero Tres.

A place called Lobster West is due to open off coast highway in Encinitas in June or a little later. In an Encinitas Patch article, the owner indicates that they will serve lobster rolls with fresh Maine lobster. The owner states that "Our rolls are not laden with mayo or celery or filler, just fresh seafood and drawn butter and lemon."

good ethnic eats

Porkyland is an above average mexican place in the village of La Jolla. Their burritos and tacos are excellent, and despite the name, most of the menu isn't pork. I personally recommend their chicken mole burrito. They also carry great chips and salsas to go. http://goporkyland.com/

At the El Napolito market/restaurant in Encinitas, they list the ingredients in their prepared guacamole and salsas. Their guacamole has sour cream. They supply some other markets in the region.

Costco food finds - 4th quarter 2012

Purchased a 1.25 lb package of MealMart New York Kosher Deli pastrami ($10) from a San Diego Costco. God awful. I threw it out.

I wish they still sold Carnegie pastrami.

Best SD doughnut / donut ?

When I lived in Westwood I used to frequent the famous Stan's Donuts. I have only been to Stardust about 3 times, but I liked their donuts even better than Stan's.

Best cinnamon rolls in San Diego?

They are warm, as they are fresh out of the oven. They are pretty gooey, with a moderate amount of cinnamon, but no nuts (nuts!).

I hadn't had one in over a year, but this thread motivated me to get one this morning.
I think I'll take a nap.

I suggest the ones at Elizabethan Desserts, but they are only available on Saturday morning. They call them rolly pollys.

San Diego New Places Opening Thread Numero Tres.

Nosh Deli is taking over the former Quizno's location on El Camino Real in Encinitas. It will be serving Jewish deli type food. Yes, it will be pretty small. I don't expect much from them, but it should be better than nothing (I hope).

I will not be eating or drinking at Searsucker, Burlap, Gingham, Herringbone, Gabardine

Based on what I have read in an article in today's UT (Restaurants Feel Squeeze on Insurance), James Brennan, owner of Searsucker et al, is clearly a swine. Somehow Phil's BBQ manages to provide health insurance to their full time workers (32+ hours/wk), and thrives. But for the Brennan/Malarkey team, it means a change in business plans.

http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/j...

“The restaurant industry is really affected by this,” said owner James Brennan.

Since 2009, Brennan and partner Brian Malarkey have created 600 jobs among their five trendy restaurants, a nightclub and catering company in San Diego.

Beyond raising prices to pay for employee health benefits, Brennan said, all of his new restaurants may be smaller, with fewer than 50 employees.

Each of his restaurants now is about 8,000 square feet, which requires about 75 employees. That was the original plan when he began scouting for a location to open a restaurant in Los Angeles. But after the Supreme Court ruling last Thursday, Brennan said he called up his leasing agent to say he wanted to look at smaller properties over the weekend.

“Instead of looking for that 70- to 75-employee size, I’m looking for square footage for 49 employees,” he said. “This is not the way I should be forced into thinking.”

Brennan said that if he had limited his staffing starting in 2009, he’d be employing 400 people today instead of 600.

“Some of these people who are applauding (the employer insurance mandate) need to be asked, do they want to be guaranteed insurance or do they want a job? Because that’s the choice,” he said. “This is real.”

Gluten-free vegan dining

I am lactose intolerant, but it hasn't affected my diet much with the help of lactase pills. I keep them in my kitchen and car, and usually take more pills than called for in the package recommendations (4 pills instead of 2 pills).

A friend or mine has gluten intolerance, and tells me that based on experience he no longer dines at restaurants that serve both gluten free and non-gluten free items. He has suffered too many times as a consequence of presumed cross-contamination.

Any good deli in San Diego?

Sprouts has Nathan's pickles, which are the best I've had in San Diego. I buy their half-sour pickles (which seem to me to be much closer to sour pickles than typical half-sour pickles), and they have an excellent crunch, which you don't get with Bubbie's pickles.

Any good deli in San Diego?

With regard to Canter's, I agree with her.

However with regards to Cheers, take a look at the menu. It is not a Jewish style deli, which leads me to be skeptical of the quality of their corned beef and pastrami.

San Diego New Places Opening Thread, Part Deux

Near term openings in Encinitas from Patch:

Dos Palmas Panaderia and Grill is slated to open on Leucadia Coast Hwy May 5 in a newly built building. http://encinitas.patch.com/articles/u...

Native Foods Cafe is slated to open in May, in the shopping center at the corner of Encinitas Bld and El Camino Real. http://nativefoods.com/

The Craftsman New American Tavern will also open its doors this summer in the space formerly occupied by Savory. Owner Wade Hageman, the mastermind behind Blue Ribbon Pizzeria, told Patch he plans to offer “simple dishes done well,” including house-made sausages and his spin on macaroni and cheese.

New assembly bill could wipe out food trucks (in California)

Apparently you did not look at the linked map (http://mlkshk.com/p/CQGN) that showed that in a very large proportion of Sacramento (used as an example), food trucks would be banned. Did you consider how large school campuses are (with their playing fields), and how many private and charter schools there are besides public schools?

New assembly bill could wipe out food trucks (in California)

http://blogs.sacbee.com/dining/archiv...

"The food truck nation is fretting over AB 1678, a bill introduced into the California State Legislature on Tuesday a.k.a. Valentine's Day. But this was no love letter for fans of mobile food. The bill seeks to ban mobile food and beverage vending within 1,500 feet of elementary and secondary schools from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. when schools are in session. The bill was introduced by Bill Monning (D-Carmel), and already given support by the California Food Policy Advocates, which focuses on low income familes' access to affordable and nutritious foods."

"A statement from Monning's office reads in part: "Mobile food vending poses a threat to student safety as well as student nutrition. Mobile vending near school campuses incentivizes students to leave school grounds, which increases students' exposure to off-campus hazards such as heavily trafficked streets."

Of course this would have nothing to do with contributions from the restaurant industry.
