wood chunks for smoking
does anyone know of an economical place to buy wood chunks for smoking? I've found hickory and mesquite at home depot, but looking for others (maple, oak, apple, cherry, etc).
I did find some woodman chunks at the local hardware store in williamsburg, but at $9.99 for 3lb bag, I'm thinking there's gotta be a cheaper way. willing to drive out of the city if need be...
Bar on Manhattan Ave Greenpoint Bkln
maybe it was the habitat? east side of street, near the mark bar. good beer selection, although no dogfish at the moment:

Ichiran Ramen Greenpoint
I haven't seen any sign of activity there for a while now. I used to see the door gate 1/2 open on occasion, implying that someone was inside working. To be honest, it looks abandoned now.
Ichiran Ramen Greenpoint
I signed up for this over a month ago, haven't heard a peep. if anyone does actually get contacted and goes, please let us know!
slovenian sausages
I'm looking for a butcher anywhere in the nyc area that has homemade slovenian sausages, in particular 'kranjska klobasa'. any leads would be greatly appreciated...
Brooklyn Label
as long time customers of BL (and big fans of the earliest incarnation), we went back the other night: I ordered the flank steak special. preparation was mediocre (I ordered medium rare, and the strips of steak ranged from medium to well-done, and the meat tasted like it was borderline off) and the presentation was poor - looked like the food was literally thrown on the plate. we won't be back anytime soon....
fresh wasabi root
Does anyone know of a store that sells fresh wasabi root? I've come across some mail order places (NC, Oregon) but they have minimum orders of 1/2 lb. Given the price (and shipping charges), I'd prefer to find a smaller quantity local. thanks.....
Ichiran Ramen Greenpoint
The gate was half open again today when I walked by. I poked my head underneath, but didn't see any anyone. It still looks set up inside, the same as its been.
Ichiran Ramen Greenpoint
last word from them was "in the new year." so could be any day, although I haven't noticed any activity, unfortunately.
Brooklyn Suggestions. . dinner for one. . .NOT FANCY!!!
The Polish place in greenpoint is Lomzynianka, Manhattan Ave @ Bedford. Very hearty and delicious, and crazy cheap.
Healing chicken soup - Greenpt/Wburg
Have a lousy cold, craving chicken noodle, matzo ball (etc) soup... Any suggestions in greenpoint or williamsburg?
a ramen shop comes to greenpoint
I poked my head in the day the restaurant appeared open: turns out they were hosting a private party/meal. they told me they would be open "next year." hopefully that means january 1st!
thermoElectric vs. compressor driven wine cooler
I'm looking to buy my first wine refrigerator, looking to spend ~$200.
and I'm wondering how critical a non-compressor style frig is. there's an avanti thermo-electric at PC Richards that can hold 28 bottles. then there's the compressor driven magic chef at home depot (discussed on another thread) that holds 45 bottles. both about the same price.
I'd love the additional room, but is the thermo-electric a key thing to look for? I'm new at all this, I'm not buying crazy expensive wine to store for the ages, but I may keep bottles for a few years.
they say that the shaking from a compressor speeds up the aging of the wine.
drunken noodles at sri
sounds like a fluke; we had drunken noodles there this past sunday night and they were the usual broad noodles.
Moving to Greenpoint. Recs???
On weekends there's a woman that sells tamales out of a cooler in front of the laundromat at Manhattan Ave and Huron St - I'm no tamale expert, but I enjoy hers immensely!
best of greenpoint?
above, plus:
Brooklyn Label (Franklin) - new to the neighborhood, fantastic brunch. had an excellent scallop risotto there last night for dinner.
The Garden (Manhattan and Java) - gourmet grocery store. very nice bread selection
Acapulco (Manhattan and Box(?)) - cheap, good mexican food. really tasty gucamole
Lomzynianka (Manhattan near Bedford) - my favorite polish restaurant in the neighborhood
Casa Mon Amour (Franklin) - latin with a slight french leaning
places I've heard good things about, yet to try:
Pio Pio Riko (Manhattan and Huron) - pervuian chicken and cheviche
Val Diano (Manhattan near Norman) - italian
thai cafe?
anyone know why the thai cafe in greenpoint got shut down by the health department? they originally had a note up that they were going to open back up in 2 days, but that was over a week ago and it seems really quiet in there, and the note is gone....
Kyoto Sushi in Greenpoint?
cool, thanks for the info; I'll check it out this weekend....
Kyoto Sushi in Greenpoint?
yea, where is it? I just googled it and only came up with kyoto sushi in flushing and manhattan.
we generally go to sapporo haru for stuff in the neigborhood: they aren't fantastic, but much better than wasabi and the owner is totally sweet. we also haven't tried katsu since the new management, but have noticed that business has picked up, which might be a good sign?
very curious to hear more about this kyoto place....
ushi wakamaru omakase
thanks so much for the thoughtful replies! we're really looking forward to the meal....
ushi wakamaru omakase
I'm taking my fiancee out for a special meal; planning to go to ushi wakamaru, omakase at the bar.... we've been there a few times and loved the meals, but we've never done the chef's choice.
so just wondering what the difference is between the 70-ish and 100-ish omakase? is it quantity, quality, a bit of both?
thanks...........
