Umami Burger, Studio City

Heads up--judging by the crowd last Saturday night spilling out onto the sidewalk, be prepared for a long wait.

Westside Basic Mexican

+3 for Gilbert's for entirely unsentimental reasons--machaca, tostadas, zanahorias, and that salsa diablo that you have to ask for

Looking for great pizza place in Sherman Oaks/Studio City Area

The best, I think, is still Caioti. A new place you might try is Pepe's, on Ventura just east of Laurel Canyon, in the tiny space previously occupied by The Arb. I've had slices from them a couple of times, and I thought they were tasty and the ingredients were just fine.

Golden State - 3 strikes and out

For what it's worth-- my wife & I stopped for lunch the other day. One BLTA, one burger--both outstanding. Good jalapeno cole slaw. Fresh quality ingredients. Excellent root beer float. Congenial service. But do not make the mistake of looking for ambience.

I certainly don't always agree with Jonathan Gold, but I think in this case he got it exactly right.

Really good bakery in the Valley

Sounds like Bea's Bakery. Terrific breads, excellent pastries. It's all good.

Bokado (Studio City) anyone?

Well, to answer my own question, Linda Burum's been there. Here's her take:

Bokado (Studio City) anyone?

This place just opened--for breakfast, lunch, dinner-- without fanfare in the space previously occupied by the late and unlamented Tommy Ray's. Any reports?

Van Nuys, California

Van Nuys definitely has its sketchy side, but for food, let's not forget the terrific Peruvian Puro Sabor on Van Nuys Blvd. near the civic center.

Mariscos Chente, the king of Mexican sashimi reopens on the Westside w/pics

Terrific coctel de camarones y pulpa yesterday around noon. But we were the only customers for an hour. And we almost drove on by because they've got a hand-printed sign on the closed glass doors that makes it appear as if the restaurant is closed. Actually, the sign just says they're cash-only, no credit cards, but you can't tell that from a car. Only my reading of these Chowhound posts motivated me to hop out of the car and make sure that they were not truly closed.

SFV alert-Regional Mexican in No.Hollywood

Does it make chow-sense to order the huaraches or quesadillas mid-day to eat at dinner? Will they hold up for a few hours? Or would I be losing something vital by waiting?

Danielle's Wood Fired Pizza--Valley Village

Just got a flyer in the mail for this place. It's on Laurel Canyon just north of the 101, but I haven't noticed it so I'm assuming it's new. Has anyone tried it?

Toustem (by Helene Darroze)

Has anyone been to this new (2007) bistro opened by Mme. Darroze? It sounds intriguing and much less expensive than her original place on r. d'Assas.

Good Seafood in the SF valley

Tony's Mexican Grill--Coldwater & Magnolia. Excellent trout plate on the regular menu & daily specials of mahi mahi or salmon. Easy on the wallet as well.

Dine LA Restaurant Week

All'Angelo's regular menu has a daily business lunch--2 courses plus dessert--for $22.00. So what are they offering us through dine la that we can't get any other day?

New to neighborhood, Pico and La Cienega

The strip mall you're referring to is on Wilshire & Crescent Heights. You'll starve on Olympic.

Where to take an LA foodie in Sherman Oak or Encino?

I think Max & Pinot Bistro are both outstanding. I've never had anything approaching a poor meal at either of them. For Sherman Oaks & Encino, they're as close as you can get to the places you mentioned.

Isaan Cafe-Studio City

Where in Studio City is the Isaan Cafe?
