Dallas BBQ and Mexican
I would highly, highly recommend Hard Eight BBQ. It is just north of the airport. Hands down the best in Dallas (which I realize isn't saying much - but it is very good).

Chicken and Dumplings in DFW
Vern's Place in Deep Ellum. They serve them on Mondays.

Sorry, just realized I must have spaced out when I wrote that reply. It's not Coit/Arapaho - but rather Coit and Campbell. Sorry about that!

It's in a little shopping center on the southeast corner of Coit and Arapaho (in Richardson). Sort of behind the Starbucks that's right there.

I ate there about a month ago. It was my first time; but I would say that it is very authentic. I was there for lunch and had what was basically a mini omakase (chef's choice). It was a bento that didn't really have any description on the menu. I went for it and was pleasantly surprised with a nice variety of items. I have heard that the dinner omakase is the way to go, and I will definitely try that if I am there for dinner.
Don't worry. It's not a place for crazy rolls with cream cheese and picante sauce!
Best Texas Wine
And yet another vote for Becker wines. I admit I have only had the Iconoclast (several times over), but I think it is one of the best $10 wines you can get.
[DFW] The Search for Takoyaki
I personally think the takoyaki at Sushiyama is pretty good; but if you are interested in making your own here is one at Amazon:

Regarding frozen ones, I haven't tried any - but I'd be willing to bet that Komart (in Irving) has some to try.
Good Japanese places, NOT on the Vegas Strip.
Thanks guys. I will check out Musashi, and Togoshi and see how the okonomiyaki is. (Even if Togoshi doesn't have it, I wouldn't mind a good bowl of ramen!)

Hi Honeychan! I just found this post, and really appreciate all the reviews you're posting. I will be in town on business next week with a co-worker who has recently become addicted to okonomiyaki. I looked through all your reviews and tried to find websites on them to search the menus - and couldn't find any mention of the dish. Do you know of any restaurants that might have okonomiyaki ( or even tako-yaki)? Ichiza-ya's menu looked very authentic, but they didn't mention it. Thanks for any help that you might have!
Pittsburgh, local favorites please (+ sushi)
I will be spending a few days in Pittsburgh next week and would love some recommendations. We will be staying in Green Tree (west Pittsburgh), so anything nearby would be great. We're looking for anything that is unique to Pittsburgh (we're from Dallas). Plus, we have to have sushi at least once, so a sushi rec would be appreciated as well. Thank you!
NY Style Pizza Recc. in D/FW
I'll third Coal Vine's. I tried it yesterday for lunch based on this thread and we were all very impressed. And very reasonable prices as well.
[DFW] Name Your Favorite Gourmet/International Grocery Stores
Komart is amazing; but the last time I was in Kazy's it looked like they were barely hanging on! Sad, because I first discovered Kazy's about 17 years ago - but they just don't have that much selection anymore.
fat tortillas
There is also a Gonzalez on Bruton Rd (in SE Dallas). They have the same thick tortillas that are nearly a meal in themselves.
[DFW] Best Authentic Japanese - not just sushi
I saw okonomiyaki on the menu at Sushiyama, but I haven't had it. I'll try it next time I go. (And they make pretty decent okonomiyaki in Kyushu also!)
Thanks for the link. I can't read all of the Japanese, but I'll see what I can do with it.
[DFW] Best Authentic Japanese - not just sushi
I'm wondering if anyone knows of other places like Sushiyama, that are great destinations not just for their sushi but for their overall representation of Japanese cuisine. If you're looking for some really great okonomiyaki or yakisoba where do you go?
Best Sushi in Dallas not named NOBU, TEPPO, or TEI-TEI
Ok, I finally went to Sushiyama for the first time last night. Wow! The sushi itself was certainly not on par with something like Yutaka (or even Genki), but their extensive menu of authentic non-sushi items plus the general ambiance made me feel like I was back in Japan. I think I just found a place to hang out!
Little Katana (sushi) Knox-Henderson area in Dallas
Genki is Japanese owned (or at least has some Japanese working there). They also seem very appreciative of your business when you stop by.

Genki Sushi (at Preston and Beltline) is also very good.
Plus, I had a similarly mediocre experience at Little Katana last week.
