Not arriving in Vienna until after 10pm on Friday. Staying near Karlsplatz. Know of any good dining options still serving food late night in the area? Thanks!

Restaurant suggestions for our Italy trip

PBSF what's your opinion on Osteria di Santa Marina? You never mention it in your posts. Would eating at Alle Testiere, Antiche Carampane, Al Covo, Fiaschetteria Toscana, Al Paradiso, or Vini da Gigio be better?

Recommendations for anniversary

My boyfriend and I are planning to go out for our anniversary and we are serious foodies, but our restaurant WANT list is too long. We just can't decide on which place is special enough, romantic enough, and super delicious enough to celebrate our anniversary.

So I turn to you hounders for suggestions. I'm sure you'll recommend tons of places on our list, but I'm also hoping to get some suggestions about places that should be on our list but aren't because we forgot to write them down or just haven't heard of them.

Thanks

Jamie Oliver to Cut Up Corpse

yes, gridder is right, some people have to work harder...much much harder to make the calorie in/calorie out equation work....but that doesn't mean it's impossible for these overweight people to lose weight and be healthy. Their bodies are processing food and calories quite differently b/c their metabolisms are shot, their insulin levels are abnormal...these are all things that can be corrected with the proper nutrition and exercise.

Saturday Lunch, Surprise Birthday

Money isn't an issue really, but I'd stay in the moderate to expensive range versus the expensive to ultra expensive range, i guess a three dollar sign rating is appropriate

Saturday Lunch, Surprise Birthday

Cuisine doesn't matter, I'd say downtown, like below 42nd st. Also, price does not matter.

Saturday Lunch, Surprise Birthday

My best friend is turning 25 and her mother wants to throw a small surprise party for her. We're thinking a Saturday lunch. Any recommendations? Should be fun, not cheesy, good food and drink a must.

Thanks!

Looking for kombu and dried bonito flakes

Sunrise Mart is next to the St. Mark's Bookstore on 3rd ave and like 9th st, one block north of St. Mark's, hang around the corner of the book store and it's on the second floor, there's an elevator to get up to it. you can't miss it, you'll find all japanese groceries you would ever need

East Village Mexican: Mercadito vs La Palapa

Having birthday dinner for my boyfriend on Friday night. There will probably be around 6-8 people having dinner.

He wants Mexican and needs to be near the East Village because he wants to check out this bar in the area after dinner.

I've been to La Palapa on St. Mark's a couple of times and always enjoyed it, but I've been reading some good things about Mercadito.

Better food is important, but if they're comparable then I think being comfortable with a large party comes a close second in importance.

Any recommendations you might have are appreciated. Or if anyone knows of another good Mexican spot in the area that is worth checking out.

Substituting ghee for butter in BAKING

First of all, ghee is used in Indian cooking in order to make crusts for things like samosas and other treats that require a flaky crust....so I'm pretty sure that it is good for making a pie crust.

Sushi Bar "Flags"?? [moved from Manhattan board]

They are like those, but way shorter, and usually hang around the over head of a sushi bar and have japanese characters on them.

Top five for $25

1. Satsko (on Eldridge) Chef's specials are always amazing and usually under $17
2.. Pio Pio (UES, although I'm sure their other locations are just as tasty): If you go with friends you can even get more than one pitcher of sangria and with the tip you'll each pay around $20 and still have food leftover
3. Bon Chon (If you consider chicken wings and fries a meal, then DEFINITELY top five)
4. Seoul Garden, also in K-town, best silken tofu soups
5. L'Express

Top five for $25

Chennai Garden is awesome. Wonderful vegetarian Indian and their all-you-can-eat lunch buffet for $6.95 is the best deal in town.

Sushi Bar "Flags"?? [moved from Manhattan board]

Does anybody know what those flags are called that are usually hung around the top part of the sushi bar in japanese restaurants? Would anybody know where I can get them?

They are kind of like a fringe around the top of the bar. The best way to describe them is like those Corona beer flag strings that every bar hangs up on Cinco de Mayo.

And the Top Chef Isn't ...

Marcel totally sucks. Yes, his food was original, but he's so god damned pretentious. He says for him it was all about the food, but I think that the food got lost in all his foams, gelees and explanations. To me, food is good if it needs no explanation. If the explanation is supposed to enhance the diner's experience of the food, then obviously the food isn't enough on it's own.

Additionally, his personality was awful. His rapping? The facades he puts on when he's with different kinds of people...remember him trying to be all down with the surfers...puhlease, could he be a bigger loser?

Expensive moving to London dinner date in W. Village or UES - Suggestions?!?!

I was actually going to suggest Mas to him, but then he said "well what do you know about Portuguese spots?" I've never been to any in the city, but heard a lot about Alfama. Would any of you recommend that?

Expensive moving to London dinner date in W. Village or UES - Suggestions?!?!

My dear friend is losing his current love interest to the Brits and he want to take her out to a really nice dinner and he wants to wear his new suit (don't ask!).

He's looking for some place where he won't feel out of place in a suit but wants minimal trendiness and as minimal stuffiness as one can get from a restaurant where you won't feel out of place in a suit.

Expense is new issue, preferrably in the W. Village or UES.

Any suggestions?!
