ONLY in Seattle - specialties and restaurants

The ultimate local favorite only available in Seattle: Dick's burger, fries, and a shake.
On a similar note: a Seattle Dog (hot dog with cream cheese).

Otherwise, I'm not sure there are many items unique to Seattle, but I would definitely try:
- A grilled pork sandwich from Paseo.
- Anything from Salumi.
- Pike Place Chowder (multiple award winning).
- Many of the local breweries.
- A meal at one of the many fabulous NW restaurants: Sitka & Spruce, Spring Hill, Spinasse, Tilth, Crush, etc.

Cuban food in Seattle?

There is a Cuban food truck on Aurora and 90th that sells Ironbeer and other Cuban sodas along with their food. They also might be able to help point you towards where you can buy your own supplies.

Help with narrowing down choices for upcoming Seattle sojourn

I've had great meals at Crush and Chef Wilson just won a James Beard Award, so it's probably a good choice.

Anchovies & Olives: Also not a bad spot for oysters (only $1 during their "power hour")
Joule: I recommend trying to make it to one of their Sunday Supper events.
Salumi: The Special of the Day, if they have the pork cheek sandwich that is great also.
Tilth: The menu changes often, so it's hard to pick one dish. They are famous for their mini duck burgers.
Zig-Zag: Remember this place is cash only.

Bilbao_Seattle: Anyone tried this?

I think Bilbao is a great tapas restaurant. It might not be up on the same level as the Harvest Vine, but you aren't paying HV prices either. I would definitely recommend checking it out.

interesting/unconventional/delicious

I haven't tried the Corson Building, but had a great meal at Elemental. I think you would enjoy the experience as long as you are prepared to let the hosts take the reigns and just accept what they decide to serve to you, that seems the best way to go about eating there.

Best shrimp po boy in Seattle? Help!

It may not technically be in Seattle, but the best shrimp po boy you'll find in the area is at Grinders. Head north on Aurora, it's around 198th. http://www.grindersshoreline.com/

Best Seattle Fish and Chips?

Anchovies & Olives does fish and chips at their happy hour which I'd bet are pretty good. I also really like those at the Pacific Inn Pub.

Seeking great (or at least good) red-sauce Italian in Seattle

In terms of American-Italian comfort food, the Italian Spaghetti House in Lake City can't be beat.

Wingmasters Mozzarella Sticks (SEA)

I remember hearing that Wingmasters in Ballard has ridiculously huge fried mozzarella sticks. Can anyone (dis)prove this rumor?

Ballard recs?

Senor Moose is another good spot for Mexican, especially for brunch. Lunchbox Laboratory has great burgers. Take 5 Urban Market is a corner grocery with a small kitchen and incredible sandwiches. Ocho is a nice tapas joint, the Jolly Roger (if it's open, they just moved) has great sliders and beer, and Mike's Chili Parlor is a Ballard institution.

La Tarasca in Centralia. What to order there?

My recommendation is to order off the a la carte menu and basically just to get as many of their tortillas as possible, they are the best thing in the restaurant.

Calzone in Seattle

Not a quick take out palce, but I'm a big fan of the calzones at Varlamo's near the U-Vilage.

challenging guest coming. Help! (SEA)

The Icon Grill downtown does traditional foods like Mac n' Cheese and meatloaf that are very good, but even they might spruce these dishes up a bit more than your guest might enjoy. Worth considering however.

seattle musts

There are so many different places to recommend you'll need to be a bit more specific about what kind of experience you're looking for. However, If you only have one night, I would not recommend using it to go to Palisades, it's not bad, there are just many far better options.
Some favorites:
- Crush
- Maekawa Bar
- Matt's in the Market
- Place Pigalle
- Sitka & Spruce

Old School Frozen Custard

I haven't yet tried Old School, but think Peakes is pretty decent. A few years back, in Detroit, I tried frozen custard, but it was more like soft serve, except that it was many times more dense. The custard places here seem to serve the custard scoop-style and it isn't quite as heavy. Anyone have any idea which is more traditional?

(CCC) CUP CAKE CRAVES

My favorite is Trophy Cupcakes. Not only do they have great flavors and cake, but the frosting ratio is much better than all the other places in Seattle.

cracklings?

You are correct. The place is called La Conasupo. It's a Mexican grocery in the front but if you head to the back there's a small eatery that sells cracklings along with some great quesadillas. Goat on the weekends as well.

Paladar Cubano

While they're both called Cuban spots I wouldn't call Paladar a Paseo's copycat. From what I've read Paladar's offerings are far more authentically Cuban. I tried their Cubano sandwich today and, while it was very good, it's not the masterpiece of a sandwich they have going on at Paseo's, which may not be authentic but it's too delicious for that to matter. That said, Paladar's sandwich is good, the guys running the truck are very friendly, and the value is hard to beat.

SEA: Spaghetti and Meatballs?

It may be partially nostalgia talking, but I'm a big fan of the spaghetti & meatballs at the Italian Spaghetti House in Lake City, especially with their spicy marinara. Just don't come expecting cutting edge cuisine, this is "traditional" American-Italian, but great.
