Sugarbakers Bake Shop - CEDAR PARK, TX

So I haven't posted in a while, but I have to rave about this great little bakery I visited today. As anybody in Cedar Park knows there is not a bonafide bakery in the city. There was one called Wildflower Bakery, but it did not impress me, and for unknown reasons it met its demise. Well....I have been watching for the past few weeks, a new bakery going up in Wildflower's old storefront, and became very excited at what the possibilities might be here. In driving down the street today, I saw a Grand Opening sign in the window, so I turned around and went in. Here is what I found....

Sugarbakers Bake Shop is the best new business to come to Cedar Park in a while (in my opinion)!!! The store front and interior is beautiful. Well put together, but VERY comfortable. It just felt good to be inside the doors. However, I don't eat the interior so I was delighted to see the selection behind the counter. (In fact I was told that since today was their first day open, they called it their "dress rehearsal day", they didn't have everything out and made yet). But what was there looked delicious and I couldn't wait to try the sweet treats tempting me behind the glass. Their sign says they serve cupcakes, cookies, brownies, and specialty cakes. But I also saw some candied nuts in the case, and was told there would be a few more surprises coming. The cupcakes all had catchy names and looked delicious. I tried the Honey Sunshine Bun (this would be the best breakfast treat...beats a cinnamon roll any day) and one called the Ding Dang (a home made version of the classic Ding Dong). They also have a signature cookie called The Sugarbaker. A large round shortbread cookie with icing to die for, this cookie literally melted in my mouth. I ended up buying a few more for the road. The cupcakes were moist, attractive and just plain delicious. They look professional but taste like home-made. zyou can tell these were made with love from scratch.

All in all I am so excited this bakery has come to Cedar Park. The owners were so inviting and friendly, the place was nice to be inside of, and the product I have tasted so far will keep me coming back. Hopefully I will become a recognized loyal customer. I recommend anybody in Cedar Park/Round Rock or any other neighboring city try this place. In my opinion it is even worth a drive from Austin for what they have to offer.

I would love to hear if anybody else discovers this place and what they think. I was told they don't have their website up and running just yet, but will be in place soon, so for now you have to just check it out! Maybe I'll see you there.

Favorite Surfas Item

Pei- I have used their fruit purees in cocktails and they are delicious. Authentic pure-fruit flavor. Not an over processed/over-sugared puree. Worth a try.

Anything in Commerce

I work in Commerce (yes, at the lovely Citadel business center) and seem to know of no decent sit-down restaurants around here. Several years ago I went to a pretty tasty Mexican restuarant north/west of Atlantic Blvd. and Telegraph Rd., but I don't remember the name. Anybody have any suggestions of good places for business lunches, or just lunch breaks when you want out of the office?

Pacos Tacos v. Don Antonio?

I live about a 3 minutes walk from Pacos Tacos and go there frequently, and can say they do have some very tasty dishes. The Con Queso is great and I too like their Carne Asada. The flour tortillas ARE delicious, and the portions served are huge. However I think DA's flavors are better. The refried beans are fantastic, and their burritos are really good. You won't go wrong with either, but I think that DA's offers more dishes that they do WELL than Pacos Tacos.

A gem at the Getty Center

This posting is a bit overdue (sorry Bobby), but I have been wanting to write a review of my outstanding dining experience at The Restaurant at the Getty Center.

After reading a posting I had made here almost a year ago asking for reviews of The Restaurant, Bobby Bognar, the restaurant manager, invited me up to try it for myself. 10 months later I made it out there to take him up on his invitation. While the idea of a fine dining establishment at a museum seemed a bit far fetched to me at first (I'm used to the typical Cafe fare offered at most museum restaurants), the Getty has done something special with this place.

As an interior designer, I must give my quick review of the decor first. BEAUTIFUL. Of course, anybody who has been to the Getty knows the whole place is spectacular, and The Restaurant did not fall short. The architecture . . . outstanding. The interior boasts amazing views, high ceilings, interesting wall decor and nice table layout.

But the amazing part was the food and service. The menu was very French in its roots. The selection was not too overwhelming, but had enough of a variety to appeal to the culinary unadventurous as well as the "food explorers". We ordered an appetizer, salad, and main course, but throughout the meal were treated to amuse bouche portions of other items we had not ordered which was a wonderful way to taste the array offered on the menu. Some of my favorite items tried this evening were the rabbit, duck, and foie gras. All cooked very well and with excellent presentation. Their wine selection was very nice and even had some nice wines by the glass. It was my husbands and my wedding anniversary and the chef made a beautiful chocolate dessert for us complete with his signature on the plate in chocolate.

The service was great. Our server was very polite, knowledgable and had a good sense of humor. From what I saw it seemed to be the case for most of the restaurant. The chef even came out and greeted us which is always a very nice touch.

All in all we had a wonderful meal in a beautiful setting. I was really impressed that it had such good food. While we went just for dinner, you couldn't go wrong making an entire afternoon out of visiting the museum and then ending it with a wonderful dinner. I hope you try it and enjoy it as much as we did.
