new place opening in Oxford, OH
I went - it was delicious! A lot of really fresh, delicious choices. It's sort of like tapas in that you can order small plates or bigger plates. Nice wines, too. So glad there's a place like this in O-town!
new sushi coming to Jackson Heights
According to my dh, it's much better than Happy K, which he thinks is awful.
new place opening in Oxford, OH
My family is from Oxford, so I've spent a lot of time there. The old DePaolo's/Lottie Moon's on Beech street has been under construction for a while. Recently I walked by while work was being done, and I peeked in and asked some questions. The proprietor happened to be there.
A high-end Continental place called 'Stella' is going to open in about a month, and they are going to use local ingredients and have some great vegetarian options, and also a a great wine selection. I can't wait to check it out, as there are nowhere near as many options around there as I'd like. I'll post a report when I do!
Best 5 restaurants in Jackson Heights?
I really don't think that there are five really good restaurants in JH. I've lived here for almost three years, and I have yet to get really excited about going out to eat in JH. :(
Is La Flor in Woodside still good?
Still very good.
You know what is great? Their hamburger! The bread pudding is amazing. I am also a very big fan of their salads.
One dinner, outer boroughs. Suggestion?
Sripraphai is great, for sure, but as a mom who rarely has a babysitter, one night when we did, but weren't exactly feeling flush, we went to Moto in Williamsburg near the Marcy Ave subway. It was romantic, inexpensive, and had a great accordion/trumpet/saxophone trio playing. The atmosphere was great and I would prefer a night out somewhere like this, as there's more to it than just the food. I think we spent 60 bucks!
EV or BK - Dive Bar with Good Pizza?
back in pre-baby days, I used to love to go to the Scratcher on E. 5th and order Lombardi's in.
fingerling potatoes in jh or nearby queens?
need these for my fondue extravaganza tonight!
Espresso 77 in Jackson Heights
Lety's baked items are wonderful, but the coffee is not
Carroll Gardens rut...its a good thing!!!
I completely agree. I was a huge fan when we lived in CG. The lentil soup is a favorite. I have tried to recreate it at home, but no such luck.
Limoncello Italian Restaurant
We checked it out last night. Somehow, there is not heat, other than what is coming from a few electric heaters. Freezing in there. We had a grilled asparagus appetizer with fresh mozzarella and vegetables. It was very good! We ordered homemade gnocchi with marinara, and it was also very good. My linguini with meatballs was so-so. We took a piece of tiramisu home, but haven't dug into it yet.
The atmosphere was a bit odd, somehow. The cold temperature, the emptiness, the nice yellow paint in contrast with the old and musty counter that has probably been in this space for a few decades. Not totally positive we'll be back. The asparagus was a stand-out, though. Maybe when the temperature warms up?
Limoncello Italian Restaurant
I just noticed it today walking from JH to Broadway. It's just on the other side of Roosevelt at 82nd/Baxter. Surprisingly, the menu is actually Italian, and not a Colombian restaurant that is called 'Italian.' (Perhaps I'm exaggerating a bit about the frequency of this, but I was a bit let down when the 'Texas Grill' turned out to have not much to do with Texas.)
I poked my head in and today was the first day open. I didn't have time for lunch, but grabbed a menu. The proprietor is a friendly guy who seemed excited about his new place.
It's cheerfully decorated (bright yellow, and in a space that gets lots of natural light) and has a menu that reflects not very inventive, but hopefully good, food. Appetizers are things like grilled asparagus, roasted peppers with anchovies, calamari, clams Possilipi. Soups are the expected minestrone, pasta e fagioli, and also a tortellini and a sparchatella. (Excuse my spelling, but it isn't so perfect on the menu, either!)
Typical pasta entrees, and also veal, chicken, beef, and seafood dishes. The lunch menu is $11 for a combination, with a side dish, pasta, and soft drink.
There are desserts as well.
If anyone gives it a shot, please post your impressions here! Looks like they take credit cards, and that they deliver, but no credit cards for delivery.
Coffee bar "culture" in Queens?
I agree that it's ok to charge for it, but $10 is a bit crazy. I was there for 20 minutes. Seemed exorbitant, especially since I'd gotten a chicken salad and a latte.
Coffee bar "culture" in Queens?
they have it at the Grind, but they charge like $10 to use it!
Best olive selection in Queens?
That it does, but much less limited than my nabe! I am an olive lover, and am always begging my dh to stop off at Gourmet Garage on his way home from work.
Best olive selection in Queens?
not many places near me in JH. I have my best luck (when I am not up for traveling to fairway) with FreshDirect, honestly!
Spicy Mina and SriPraPhai
thanks, Jules. OK, next time! I took the waiter's rec both visits, which maybe wasn't the right thing. The saag paneer (sp?) that is not the expected creamed spinach sounds pretty heavenly. :)
Spicy Mina and SriPraPhai
Underwhelming Mina's experience last night. I've been twice, and both times I wanted to love it, but it hasn't happened yet. Had the Achar something or other, which I really liked. Friend had the Kashmiri Chicken (rec'd by waiter) and it was un-interesting. The appetizer platter was so...fried. That is really the only taste I remember from it.
The last time we went, had the Achar and the mustard fish, the latter I was not all that into, despite the good things I've read. The chana chat (sp?) was ok, but it was oily and sweet and didn't do anything for dh or me.
Owners are lovely, but I don't think I'll go back. I keep hoping I'll have an 'experience.' Am I just ordering all wrong?
Delivery in Jackson Heights?
we get Taqueria Coatzingo delivered pretty often to the upper 80s
Starbuck's JH's?
I'm pretty sure that it is still going to be a Starbuck's. They have to build a customer restroom (there wasn't one in the gift shop), so this is likely all it means.
new sushi coming to Jackson Heights
very close to Inti Raymi - not open yet or even close. Just brown paper on the storefront glass.

Decent Bar in Jackson Heights?
they don't have drafts, though.
Man, I'm a broken record. I like that place, though.
Decent Bar in Jackson Heights?
Ive been to them all, and those are the only choices, but Novo and Cavalier don't even have good beer in bottles let alone draft. Penny is ok, but food is not an option. Texas Ranger has a couple of good beers, but I just don't like the food there. I do like a place on 30th Avenue - a pub, but I can't remember the name. It's just a long haul for me to get there.
Decent Bar in Jackson Heights?
Nope, and I'd go, too.
A place with some good drafts, good pub food, and a nice atmosphere (in JH, yeah, I know I can go to Woodside!) would be great.
Someone posted on here once about opening a bistro in JH. Where are you, you tease?
$75: Date in WBurg/Gpoint, need ideas
this is a bit further, but Moto near the M train in S Wburg is a great and romantic cheapish date spot.
Subway directions to Sriphaphai?
lukebdonnelly is right, but for future handy reference, hopstop.com is awesome.
Yogurtberry - more new stuff in Jackson Heights
I agree with the hollow middle being a problem (and hope that will get worked out), but I am definitely a fan of this stuff. It tastes, to me, indiscernible from Pinkberry. Like yogurt, and refreshing as opposed to creamy. I think it's a matter of whether you like the taste or not, and I'm sure there are plenty who won't.
