Ranch Can Be Transcendent...

The ranch at Wing Stop is VERY good. My wife is a total ranch snob and prefers her own homemade for the occasional times that I can convince her to make it and she absolutely loves WS's ranch. Great on celery sticks and wings as well. They also toss their fries in salt as well as just a little sugar, yuum.

ps. thanks for the Snuffer's reference, now I want some of those mushrooms!! ;-)

Liquid Nitrogen?

I got a good deal on Ebay at one time. You can certainly pay significantly less.

Any good restaurants in the Marble Falls area? (moved from Austin board)

909 and the Falls have great food and great wine. The falls is a Fixe Prix that changes nightly with assorted appetizers as well, 909 is in the top 5 Austin restaurants and has a great menu. Patton's on Main is a little less expensive but still fairly tasty. Bluebonnet is an experience but is what it is, diner food. Jamin House is great island/Jamaican food, ask for the house peppers with your bread if they still have it. Opies BBQ out in Spicewood is very good and is very similar to Coopers. Russo's Texitally is good texas italian. Storms and Atwood's are very good burgers. Janie's Mexican food on Avenue N is probably about the best Mexican food available.
If you want to head out to Llanno you can go to Coopers for BBQ or Llaneaux Seafood House for good seafood/cajun. You can also stop in Kingsland at the Tamale King for some great homemade style tamales.

Fried Pickle Spears

Plucker's Wings has some of the best fried pickle spears that I've ever had. They don't survive take-out or delivery but in-house they are very good. Good texture, good crisp, and still a nice crunchy pickle inside.

Sunflower Closing

What's the skinny? We had tried to go a few times and it now seems they are gonners. Although not always the best service-wise we always enjoyed the food and will be glad to see them gone. As busy as they were I have a hard time believing that they couldn't make it financially. Anyone know what the story is or if they're going to re-open?

Good spicy soup for a sick girl

My wife and I always crave the Hot and Sour from Kim Phung when we're feeling under the weather. It will cheer you right up!

What to order at Sunflower

The shaken beef is very good, though I like the lemongrass tofu quite a bit as well. They have great fresh lemonade. I also agree with the spring rolls and imperial rolls.

Frito Pie at Billy's on Burnet

I think that their wings are very good. Just the right heat and sauce consistency. Though sitting on the deck with a pitcher and the wings does go a long way into creating a relaxing mood. I'll have to try their jerk wings, though it'll just make me sad since I hadn't thought about Shaggy's in a while.

Tin Star

It is an "upscale" taco joint ala Taco Deli. Not nearly as good as Taco Deli though. There was a corporate Tin Star in Hancock for a while but it closed. The new Tin Star franchise owned by the same person who owns the Sonic franchise. According to the manager at the McNeil store he is committed to opening a good number of them. My problem with the new group is that they've chosen a much more minimal approach so there is no salsa bar. One of my favorite items at the old one was the corn salsa. The only option at the new franchise is the red salsa. Their signature soft tacos are some of their best items on the menu.

BBQ Catering in June?

I believe that Bert's is still going to cater, even though the MLK location burned down.

Bear Rock Cafe

I live nearby and we got suckered into the BR trap one saturday after they first opened. My overall opinion of the place was, "this menu seems like it should be good." Almost everything on there could be good, but there is just no execution. It's a classic example of fast food thinking of making a "high end" establishment. I seem to remember it being overpriced as well. About the only think I enjoyed was the soup, but it was a very small serving.

Deleware says they are opening that location again but I have not seen much action. The Sushi restaurant in the same center is good, I will have to post a review when I have time.

Lambert's

I notice that they take reservations. Interesting, is it "that nice" of a place, or are they just assuming it will be that busy? Glad to see that their choice of team service is working, it often doesn't in Austin. Too many students, too many slackers, not sure why. :-) I heard from someone that their deviled eggs were quite tasty, if I get the holiday jones I might have to stop by the bar for a few.

Capital Brasserie

Austin has needed more of a mid-range (price) brasserie for a while. I'll have to give it a try.

Review - Ironworks BBQ

I always walk over there when I'm at the CC or nearby. I love the sausage and the beef ribs are good. The brisket can be spotty, I have asked to look at it before ordering before. Picky, picky. :-)

Matt's El Rancho

I think that are a number of things they still do well. That in addition to good drinks and great service, along with the tradition, keep it high on people's list. There are lots of kinds of list. It might not be on my top great for food lists, but it would probably be on my top 10 lists of places to take out of town people wanting to experience Austin.

Manuel’s Downtown—So Not Delicious

Polvo's seems to be about the same type of place, a great place for drinks but not so great for food. At least imho.

Bert's BBQ, RIP

Tell me about it. I was devastated this morning. I didn't know what to think. My heart goes out to the boys. Long live Berts!!

Austin CH Looking for Dallas Pointers

Headed up to Dallas next week and looking for something that we might have missed in the past. Something nice but not super fancy. Headed up for the All Star game and don't want to have to pack anything just for dinner (read tie). :-) We'll be downtown but would go a little out of our way. We've eaten at all of the "well known" great places but are looking for something new or something we wouldn't know about not living in Dallas.
TIA

Out of (Tru)lucks

We used to go to the downtown location for the Power Lunch. $15 for salad, entree, and dessert. It was a great deal, and the service was always good because they weren't too busy. They started doing that because they weren't getting a lot of lunch business. They took it off of the menu about a year ago, something to do with management revamping the menu. The times we've been for dinner have been hit or miss. The crab claws are always good, but as Tom said, it is their only "sure thing." Though the hot and crunchy trout is always very good. They also have a good fish supplier, so their basic fish fillets and steaks are normally a safe bet. The tuna is one of my favorites.

Dungeness crab anywhere in Austin?

Quality Seafood on Airport has DC in season and you can eat on site. Not sure if they have the crab on menu as it doesn't show on their site.

I love their seafood and their market. The seafood is always fresh and the staff is always friendly.

Breakfast Tacos and Migas in Austin

Torchy's Tacos are awesome. Great for breakfast or lunch. The hot sauce is great, if they haven't run out of it. In a trailer at 1207 South 1st Street, across from El Mercado. Try the ranch hand or texas taco.

Soup Peddler Austin

I've been a soupie for a number of years and you won't be disappointed. We find ourselves hoarding our favourite soups in the freezer.
