Is there any Authentic Mexican Restaurant in Toronto area??
I'm from California and haven't found anything like the Mexican food I grew up with.
Shepherds' Pie
I grew up eating lamb, in Southern California. I never cooked it for myself when I lived there though and I don't know how common it is in the stores.
Now I live in Toronto and it's common here, but there's less of it than beef, chicken or pork. We do have frozen shepherd's pie with lamb at my local supermarket.
Looking for Lithuanian Food in GTA
My husband is Lithuanian and I've looked for Lithuanian food in Toronto with no success. Maybe we will try going to that Lithuanian Hall as it is close to our house. I would like to have it in a regular restaurant though, I guess we will have to go to Chicago.
Mexican/burritos on Yonge at shuter
Is it Chimichangas? I haven't eaten there but I've heard it's good.
What else is better in Canada?
They do have clamato juice in the states, at least they had it in California where I grew up. I remember seeing it in stores and wondering why on earth anyone would drink that! But I never heard of caesars being a drink until I moved to Canada.
great restaurants with grocery stores?
Filippi's Pizza Grotto in San Diego's Little Italy has a grocery store where they sell Italian groceries and some of their own packaged food products. It's a very old fashioned place with basic Italian - spaghetti, meat balls, ravioli and pizza. It's kind of dark inside and they have wine bottles and grapes hanging from the ceiling and red and white checkered table cloths. My grandparents started going there in the 40s and it still looks pretty much the same.

They moved to the junction.
Merits and demerits of "trying to like" foods
My granny started me really early with half-milk coffee with a ton of sugar. Then she'd complain that I couldn't settle down. But I can't remember a time when I did not drink coffee. I'm drinking some right now!
Merits and demerits of "trying to like" foods
I used to not like spicy foods at all. When I would get Thai food I would ask for it extra mild. That caused a problem when I would go out with friends and we would want to share, so I gradually got myself to try hotter and hotter foods. Now I like spicy food and I eat it even when I am alone.
Danforth & Coxwell
The food is great at El Sol, the service is horrible. It was the worst restaurant service I have gotten in Toronto. The staff completely ignored us and several other tables. They would not make eye contact with us. When they brought the food they put the plates down and left without giving us a chance to say anything. I had wanted to order another margarita, but not able to, nor were we able to get refills on our water or anything else to drink.
The staff or owners or whoever were socializing with their friends at another table. After we finished our food, we sat for a long time and I finally went up to the table where they were and asked for the check. I enjoyed the actual food but not nearly enough to put up with that. I don't think it would be a great place to take a client.
Street food longings
I miss LA street tacos, sold out of trucks. Rambo's Tacos in Eagle Rock was a favorite. You just can't get good California style Mexican food in Toronto.
Tell me about Japanese curry
The Japanese curries I have had tend to be yellow or golden brown in color and not very spicy. This has been mostly in San Diego, where curry is a more common item to find in Sushi places than it is in Toronto where I live now, or San Francisco where I lived before that.
Indian spice/parampara packets in Toronto?
I used to get that brand at House of Spice in Kensington market, I haven't been there for a while so I don't know if they still carry it.
House of Spice 190 Augusta St. Toronto, ON 416 593-9724
The French Cruller diet
They used to have them at Winchell's donuts in the LA area back when I was in highschool in the 80s.
My trick for the donut store diet is to promise myself that if I don't get a donut I can make myself something much better at home that would have the same amount of calories. Then I usually don't, when I get home and go in my kitchen most of the time I just have an orange or something.
Suggestions for a good Indian buffet?

Has a great buffet. It's small, but everything I've had is good, especially the eggplant dish I keep going back for. It's in an old house and is very pleasant inside with nice decor. Service is good, but not outstanding. They have dinner and lunch buffet.
I like Kama and have never experienced any customer service problems there. Then again I have never been when it's busy.
Sidartha in Little India was good the one time I ate there.
I ate at India Flavour once, thought it was ok and probably won't be back just because I'd rather go to India Hut or Kama.
Best All You Can Eat Japanese in Toronto GTA
I agree, I've eaten at both and Sushi Island is better. But try to avoid it on weekend nights, there is a huge wait and there's really no good place to line up, so everyone ends up crowding right in the doorway.
I also like mostly non-authentic sushi, like California rolls and veggie rolls. The crunchy rolls at Sushi Island are great.
Sushi purists will probably want to go elsewhere.
Best purchase you made last year - who knew
I got rid of all my teflon pans and replaced with cast iron. So much better, I love cooking on cast iron now.
Pho Phuong - Vietnamese Fine Dining
I found this board when I Googled Pho Phuong. We live a few blocks away from it and ate there for the first time on Saturday. We are already planning on going back.
We had hot spring rolls, beef rolls that we assembeled ourselves and an onion pancake. It was all excellent, expecially the pancake which came out sizzling hot and nicely crispy.
Not only did they have a large amount of mint but an impressive variety including one type of mint that had leaves as big as the palm of my hand.
We had two servers, one was very abrupt and one was very pleasant and knowledgable. I hadn't eaten Vietnamese in a long time so it was nice to have someone patient to answer my questions. The menu is not designed for people who are not used to Vietnamese food and since I am originally from California the Vietnamese food I am used to is a little different.
