Okay, let me explain. It's my b day tomorrow, and I finally have the night off! I would love to go out to dinner with about 5 or 6 others but I do celebrate Passover and need a place where I could still get my grub on. I was thinking sashimi...good fish, no rice, no problem. Any suggestions for a nice sushi dinner that won't be too expensive for a group? Middle ground between good quality and affordability, hopefully with a decent atmosphere. Or, any other ideas for a Passover-guideline friendly b day dinner/cuisine type? Anywhere in LA is fine including the valley...Thanks so much! |

Slaw dogs, just tried it again. I have only tried Slaw Dogs once (about a week ago) but found it very disappointing. Everything was oversauced, fell out of the mushy bun...just not good. I live right nearby so will give it another shot but was not impressed. ----- |

What products at Trader Joes to avoid? I like many things from Trader Joe's BUT recently tried the reduced guilt vegetable pizza (with the eggplant and squash)...very inedible. Mushy unidentifiable veggies and nasty taste. Don't really like their breads or hummus either but that's a personal preference. |

Leonidas Old Town - no more leonidas chocolate! Yes, it is closed. I am pretty sure it's gone for good, at least from what I could gather when I stopped by. |

Is it Label's Table as mentioned earlier? |

Best Iranian/Persian Food in L.A.?? I agree...just tried this place and chicken kebab and basmati rice was excellent. Didn't love their sides but maybe I tried the wrong things. Service was excellent. |

Let me know if you try any good knishes on Pico! Where I work, the knishes are way too massive, and the dough to filling ratio is off...not to mention bland. |
|
|
Thanks, never been there even though I grew up in the neighborhood. Will have to check it out. Any other suggestions? Does Langers have good knishes? |
|

Hello, I was wondering where you all go to get your knish fix. I think I have only had sub par knishes as they tend to be dry and flavorless, but I feel like the doughy balls have potential if only done right. Maybe some former NYers know of some secret spots here that I'm missing? I work at a Jewish deli and STILL have not had my knish fix satisfied...Thanks!!! |

What Foods Do You Hate/Dislike that Most Hounds Probably Love? I dislike: olives, mayo, ketchup, plain pistachios ( but love them in baked goods and ice cream!), super dark chocolate, most marinara/red sauces, mashed potatoes, most chips (tortilla, potato), dill in most recipes, seafood salads, most beer. However I do notice as I get older my tastes are changing. I used to hate all nuts but now eat nuts and peanut butter almost daily. I WISH I disliked sweets/baked goods but that will probably never happen ; ) |

Yes, at some bakeries I've been too there is cinnamon on them. I don't like it, but it's there. Thanks for the advice. Any other bakeries come to mind??? |

Does anybody know of a really good place for palmiers? I seem to find only subpar ones, which will not satisfy! I don't like them too cinnamon-strong...but with a nice chewy interior and crispy exterior. Thanks in advance! |

I had the red velvet cupcakes from dots a couple weeks ago...very good, and I'm not particularly a red velvet fan...I liked them because they were very moist, not too sweet, and not an overbearing amount of frosting...proportions were good. |

Best 7 Layer Mocha Cake...Help satisfy my insatiable craving! Hello, I have been majorly craving a good 7 layer mocha cake and though I have tasted some, was wondering if anybody knew of a really good place to get one for my upcoming birthday. In particular: I don't like my sweets overbearingly sweet. Nice soft yellow cake with creamy mocha filling and covered in good chocolate. What can I say, I want it all! Like a good Jewish bakery would make, not Dobaschtorte though (no caramel please). Anybody know if Viktor Benes makes a good one? Beverlywood Bakery? Anywhere else? A search availed little. THANKS!!! ----- |

Hi, I was thinking of making some granola and was wondering if anyone could share their favorite mixes/recipes. I don't love a ton of nuts in granola, but will tolerate some. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. |

joe's NY pizza in santa monica = hyped & awful Just wanted to add my bit-tried it today and found it good. Not out of this world, but good. I enjoyed the crispy crust. Not sure which I like more- this or Vito's-but since Vito's is closer to me I'll probably be there more often. All in all Joe's is a good place for pizza if I'm in SM. One note, I did have a reheated slice, and would love to try it fresh from the oven. Regarding the neighborhood-if only I could afford to live waterfront maybe I'd be one of those "scary" homeless people panhandling strangers-if only! |

Delicious figs and/or persimmons? Hi, I am searching for good quality figs and/or persimmons. Lately I have tried some at Trader Joe's and also local Persian markets, and although they have been okay, I wanted to know if anyone has any go-to sources for better quality. Any farmers' markets that have tasty ones lately? Anywhere on the west side to downtown please. Thanks in advance. |

Beautiful Costco pomegranates -- Now what? Try tossing them over plain frozen yogurt or ice cream. Very yummy! |

REVIEW w/ pics: Louisiana Famous Fried Chicken, Seafood & Donuts Yeah, I have only been to the one on Imperial and Main but the fried chicken and fries were surprisingly good. |

Katana on Sunset does this. I haven't had it anywhere else so I can't really compare. |
