Lunch/Dinner Near Olana -- Recs Please!

I can't believe no one has responded to this post so I will get the ball rolling. Olana is maybe 10 minutes from Hudson NY where you will find numerous antiques shops with several specializing in midcentury modern. They vary in price and selection but it is a good full days antiquing for sure. There are dozens of antique stores lining Warren St - the main street in town. Also Hudson has some very good restaurants which you will find discussed in other posts here - search Hudson and I am sure you will find a variety of opinions. I love Baba Louie, Wunderbar, and American Glory on the less pricey end, and if you want to pay more money - many rave about Ca'Mea and Swoon.

To the south about 1/2 hours ride down Rt 9 or Rt 9G is Rhinebeck with less antique stores these days but lots of charm and several good restaurants there as well - Terrapin, Le Petit Bistro, Gigi, and some new ones I hear good things about - Local, among others. Also - search this board for Rhinebeck and Dutchess Co. You can stop in Red Hook to antique on the way also.

I think Hudson fits your bill best but Saugerties has some nice antiques stores too. Also some good restaurants in that area - I personally love New World Home Cooking but it is controversial and some will flame it no doubt. CafeTamayo use dot be very good - have not eaten there in 10 yrs plus so I am not sure how it rates these days. No doubt others will have discussed Saugerties here.

I am not sure about places to stay since I live in the area and never need them. There are defintiely B&Bs and some motels and Rhinebeck has a lovely old Inn - Beekman Arms.

It is a wonderful region to visit - esp in the summer.

Top Chef...when?

OK, I admit it - I am missing Top Chef. I thought I would have had enough after the past couple - TC and TCM - went back to back, but no.

Anyone know when the next one will be and where?

Thanks!

I also did not think most of the chefs were on the bandwagon with Elia - rather I thought they looked rather uncomfortable with it. I will give it a second look though if I can catch it.

I think the whole grass fed beef issue is not a bad issue to raise, and certainly it would be admirable for Elia or other TC contestants could use their new celebrity to promote awareness of sustainability and healthy food industry practices...HOWEVER, it seems to me that Elia came off as petulant, vindictive, and immature in this questioning/attacking Tom Colicchio, especially in the context of theTC loss . She just did not seem willing to let it go. I don't think attacking him in the media serves to make this point well, rather it is seen as it has been - in the context of sour grapes and her elimination.

I thought Jen came off somewhat better, but I think the comment herethat she and Elia became close friends maybe explains in part her behavior during her elimination tantrum. I thought she was graceless and bordered on obnoxious much in the same way as Elia. I was surprised to see this since during her season she had seemed quite different.

I am guessing that Tom's endorsement of Diet Coke is probably a business decision
(read:big bucks) as much as anything else. Hopefully he will use the money well and employ lots of young sapiring chefs and food industry workers.

Did someone do an edit? I don't see any reference ot Achatz OR Acheson in the OP.

I found it a bit dull but I am sure it will pick up. As for being more civil than regular TC - so was the last TCM, I think.
On the plus side, I thought Curtis Stone did a decent job as host. Not that he has to do much but at least he was not offensive, and at least one chef verbalized respect for him.

Grant Achatz on NPR's Fresh Air

Thanks for the info however the Chicago mag article that was posted below contradicts you - specifically stating that it is in fact a relatively rare form of cancer.

Even worse he was misdiagnosed for 2 and half years by doctors, dentists, etc.

He also actually did not "catch it early for effective treatment" - he was Stage Four when they finally figured it out. . He was just incredibly lucky that there was a clinincal trial of a new medication that happened to work for him really well.

Anyone else watching "America's Next Great Restaurant"? * Spoilers *

I watched it on and off this evening while doing other things, so I got the jist but not every detail. It seems ok to me for a network reality show effort. I will tune in now that the competitors are chosen and I assume some challenges will occur, and see how it progresses. Not much competition in that time slot anyway.

I found the judges discussions interesting re: what may make a good restaurant concept within the general category of fast casual.

Yeah - best ideas from peeople with the confidence and willingness to sign on for the public humiliaiton of a network TV reality show...that thins the field a bit, I would imagine.

Grant Achatz on NPR's Fresh Air

I caught about half of this interview last night and I thought it was stunning. At least in the part I heard, Grant Achatz was very candid . I was awestuck by his description of what he has endured and how resilient he must be.

I plan to listen to the rest of the interview by podcast, and thought I should mention that Fresh Air has a free podcast of their interiews, in case you are not familiar with that.

I don't know if he addressed it elsewhere in the parts of the interview, but the first thing that came to mind for me was the coincidence of a pioneer of molecular gastronomy being stricken with tongue cancer. I know I certainly have not often heard of tongue cancer occurring - maybe it is more common than I realize, but this certainly made me wonder whether there is a relationship between the usage of chemicals and /or chemical processes in food preparation and this occurrence of a relatively unusual form of cancer.(IF it is). Maybe this also has been discussed elsewhere?

Still and all it was a riveting discussion.

Kinda agree - I thought the judges sort of wimped out by not eliminating someone. Yes, tthe dishes did all look good, and i would want to eat any of them, but come on...aren't they sort of changing the rules as they go along?

My theory is that this is because Bourdain was not at judges table - I feel sure he would have held their feet to the fire.

Mr. Pio Pio, Albany

Since I saw this post get revived last week, I decided to stop at Mr Pio Pio - I had hgh expectations, based on the posts.
Unfortunately, I was not impressed.
I tried to order Lengua and Pernil - neither were available, I then ordered spare ribs to go.
When I got home I found 2 large ribs which were fatty and undercooked - with raw meat near the bone. They were swiiming in a cloying sweet sticky sauce. This was on plain white rice, with three tostones. The tostones were he best thing in the meal but somewhat bland and dry. I dipped them in the hot sauce - which was fiery. I like hot food- but this was seriously hot.
The dinner came with salad- small amount of iceberg and carrot shreds of carrot and and old piece of tomato. A drizzle of some sort of dressing (it was unappetizing and I tossed it out after a bite) . To be honest there was nothing abot this dinner I liked and that encourages me to go back.
I suspect I ordered wrong, but the sides were terrible too.

Ahh, pea puree caper!! I was just thinking of that too.

Was that ever solved? I forget the name of that geeky chef who was heavily suspected of being the culprit. If I am not mistaken he denied it to the bitter end, and there was no evidence to convict him...

Glenwood Springs Restaurant Recommendations?

On a coast to coast drive we stayed in Glenwood Springs and ate at the Glenwood Canyon Brewing Co right in town. We really enjoyed it.: very good beer, good food, friendly service, casual and inexpensive. I believe it was the Glenwood Springs brewpub, or someting similar. Nothing fancy or exceptional but very enjoyable after a long day of driving.

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #7 - 01/19/11 (Spoilers)

I know it has been stated earlier but I think it bears repeating that Dale played RW perfectly in every way to his advantage. I have new respect for him - he is quiet and not a showboater, but very very sly and much smarter than he lets on. I also have alot of respect for him just getting up and walking away from Marcels apparently drunken rant at him. Looks like he didn't get mad, just got even.

Don't forget that Marcels scapegoat tendency has backfired on at least one chef in the past.

In addition, it seemed clear that he was able to be an effective leader in comarison to Marcel. He was for the most part able to use his team members strengths to the team advantage
(Fabio as FOH, CArla on dessert, etc.) and keep the focus off of himself. The only exception was the hoohah with the servers, but all things considered - a big difference in leadership.

I also thought Fabio was fabb-o, especially compared to the other team FOH. He really seemed to know what he was doing and seemed very professional. Maybe he and Blais will continue their bromance post TCA and open a restaurant together.

lunch in Hudson?

I would second Baba Louie - everything is good there. There is also a new place called American Glory which was quite good. They specialize in BBQ but also have quite a few sandwiches and some other choices. Have been there twice now and thought the food was very good.
Not sure whether everything is open on MOndays or not. Another good place for lunch is the Cascades - really good little sandwich place. All on Warren St.

Glenwood Canyon Brewery

Just want to give a shout out to Glenwood Canyon Brewery in Glenwood Springs, Co. We stopped here for dinner and beer on a recent corss country drive, and really enjoyed both the beer and food here. Service was friendly and attentive, the atmosphere was neighborhood-y and casual. Being hopheads, we ordered the IPA and really enjoyed it.

As a bonus they continually run a sepia toned B&W movie showing the beer making process in the brewpub.

We are pretty open to any really good places that are moderately priced - really does not have to be celebs, however it would be fun to try out.

I will put Craftsteak on the list - my SO would be in favor of steak.

New and passing through - need recs!

Hi: I am a NYer that will be driving cross country in a week or two - I am looking for recommendations on where to eat in Las Vegas. We will be in town one night only and I am hoping for a great place not TOO expensive, but with all the chef celebs in town it would be fun to eat somewhere notable.

Also hearing about any great diners for breakfast would also be appreciated. We will heading east.

Any help for an out of towner, LV newbie is much appreciated - will be happy to do the same if you need help with the Hudson Valley region in NY.

If you recall there are similar threads on this board - just point me the way!

Many thanks!

Hong Kong Bakery in Albany

Just got some pretty niice wonton soup here yesterday. Homemade wontons with a shrimp and pork meatball in each one, in a light clear broth with some greens.

Has anyone tried other food here yet?

It is located on Central Ave between Robin and Lake.
