Chuck Lawrence's Profile

short notice trip for san francisco fooders

Welcome to the 'hood:
Tavern on Jane - burger is better than Corner Bistro
Barbuto - Jonathan Waxman's classic roast chicken
Bonsignor - on Jane - coffee, pastries
Cafe Cluny - nice for breakfast
Murray's Bagels - 6th Ave btw 12th and 13th St
Collichio & Sons - Tap Room
Chelsea Market - lots of threads on here
Grand Szechuan - Ninth Ave and 24th St.
Co. - pizza - Ninth Ave and 24th St.
La Bergamote - Ninth Ave and 20th St - almond croissants
Corsino - part of the 'ino group
Employees Only - cocktails
Taim - falafal
Morandi - nice for breakfast, lunch
Recette
Keste - pizza on Bleecker St
Donut Pub - 14th St. and 7th Ave :)

Seeking Restaurant very close to Film Forum

Snack Taverna - good Greek on Bedford St.

soft serve ice cream/custard trucks

Not a truck, but Shake Shack has very good custard.

Needed: good Mexican delivery in Greenwich Village

Mexicana Mama on Hudson St delivers.
I also just tried the new Oaxaca Taqueria that opened on Greenwich Ave. - I liked it. They deliver.

Orso or DB Bistro for dinner

Orso. But you don't go there for the food, although it is good.
Consider The Bar at the Modern.

New York Pizza

quintessential schmintessential, try:
Motorino
Keste
Zero Otto Nove (in the Bronx!)
Franny's
Rubirosa - for a slice
Co.

Wkend itin for SF couple, staying in soho

Raoul's - PASS - unless you're only going for "atmosphere". Their great food days are long past. Dinner at Minetta is a better bet, or even one of the Blue Ribbons.
Rubirosa is great for a slice. That's about it.
WD-50 - fun!
How about Acme?
Why not Parm for late Mon lunch?

Passover

re: prepared foods - Citarella, Fairway, and Zabar's

American breakfast for family - Union Square area

Coffee Shop - Union Sq West and 17th St.

Cocktails in Chelsea

The Bar at the Maritime Hotel. Not a mixologiy destination but a pleasant, hip room with good drinks.

Visiting Manhattan on smallish budget

Hummus Place, Taim (falafel)
Chelsea - Friedman's Lunch (Chelsea Market), check out other Chelsea Market options, Cookshop.

I was similarly skeptical about other branches of Wondee. I recently went to the outpost on Tenth Ave and 46th St and found it as good as the original. And yes, they have both "secret" and Thai language menus. They also have beer and wine, and charge $10 corkage.

The Modern - Dining Room or The Bar Room.
Around four blocks from the theatre.

-----
The Modern
9 West 53rd Street, New York, NY 10019

Lunch before Book of Mormon tomorrow !

Don Antonio - great pizza, on 50th Street just west of 8th Ave.
One block from the theatre.

Pre-theater between Lincoln Center and Times Square

Uncle Nick's on Ninth Ave for Greek. Casual, not much atmosphere, but the food is fresh and tasty. The vegetarians will be happy with the various dips and salads, and all the grilled meats and fish are good. The flaming cheese appetizer is always a hit. Reasonable prices. I'd call ahead re: party of eight.

What to take for friends in San Francisco

One stop shopping at Russ and Daughters. They will pack smoked fish with ice packs, I do it often for flights to LA. Bagels, bialys, and pletzels (try finding those in SF) will be fine the next morning (they use plastic bags). They also carry a great dark rye which stays fresh for several days, and is terrific with smoked salmon. Don't forget a babka. And the candy counter.

Quick question: Colicchio & Sons' Tap Room or Main Dining Room?

The Tap Room. It's more casual. The menu ranges from pizza to burgers to composed dishes. Really good cocktails, and wines on tap! Just shoo them away if they appear to be rushing you.

Going to Manhattan for the first time - Restaurant Recs??

Welcome to NY.
You can't beat Kathryn's comprehensive list but here are my greatest hits. I live in the neighborhood where you're staying, you'll also want to get around. Call ahead and suggest walk in strategy/bar seating if booked.

Had a very nice Peking Duck at Oriental Garden on New Year's Day last month. The added bonus is the choice of all the great seafood to follow.

What is your favorite street(s) for great meals or quick snacks?

Grand Street - Saigon Bakery for banh mi, Bo Ky for noodle soups, De Palo's fpr all things Italian (ok, it's a market albeit with great samples), Ferrara (good not great Italian pastries), and Double Crispy Bakery (see other thread). My off the block dessert stop is La Cremeria on Mulberry for gelato (closed for winter until end of Feb).

Bleecker Street ain't bad - Keste for pizza (some like John's), Rocco's for Italian pastries ( fresh filled to order cannoli), Murray's Cheese, Amy's Bread, Grom for gelato (I prefer L'arte de gelato around the corner on Barrow) and Faicco's for Italian meats and cheeses. Surya has nice Indian. Hummus Place just off Bleecker on Seventh Ave South.

Walk over to Chelsea Market on 9th Ave - the soups in the Lobster Place are very good. Nice selection of various chowders, bisque, etc.
