Buying a "Carousel Bakery" cake for Uncles 88th b-day. Oprah has a favorite but what's yours? Pls help, b-day Tues...

Foodiemom, me too. Between my husband (whose originally from NY ) and my immediate family that just LOVE cake, I always feel like I'm in the search for the best bakeries.
Unfortunately, there's no good bakeries where we live and since they all seem to be connoisseurs on cake, its always a challenge. I wind up ordering on line or calling bakeries that I know and have things shipped alot.

Anyway, just wanted to f/up and let you and Ttrockwood know what happened since you both took the time to try and help me. Thank you again.

I decided to order the mousse cake from Caroussel Bakery. I have a friend that works at Bergdorfs and after checking with the restaurant, said whenever they hv ordered their cakes ppl seemed to like them although the restaurant had never ordered their mousse cake. They had only ordered their carrot cake and I think she said black out cake but thought I should be fine with whatever I ordered from there.

Woke up early Monday morning to call and place my order so it could be sent out that day with overnight delivery. (Their closed over the weekend)
To my dismay, because of the storms, the place was closed.
So disappointed.

I called Ess a Bagel afterwards and found out they sell
several cakes of theirs by the slice and also can buy a whole
cake but due to the weather didn't get any delivery's in nor
would they be able to ship anything out either. Lady said also didn't think they'd be prepared to ship a cake regardless. (Have ordered bagels from them before which are really good along with a few of their danish (cheese danish) and choco cigars) that I like which they did ship.
Also, lady said she preferred the black out cake over the mousse one when I asked her about it.

Anyway, wound up calling my brother who lives near my Uncle and explained what happened. Said not to worry. He would pick something up there.
When I spoke with my Uncle later, he said his neighbor came into visit him and brought him a key lime pie that she had made. She didn't even know it was his b-day plus he had another cake my Sister-in-Law had given him when he came home. Had plenty of cake.
So I guess it all seemed to worked out ok in the end.

Next time I'm in NY plan to stop at one of these places so I can try the cake for myself and will know for next time if I need a cake delivered.

Thanks again.

No, but that chocolate cake there looks delicious!
Foodiemom was correct. They are in Nanuet but they distribute
their cakes thru-out many NY markets and restaurants.

I checked with Grace's Marketplace and they sell a blackout cake of theirs and I think also their carrotcake. Just wondering,
maybe people arent aware its from their bakery.

Thank you Ttrockwood for offering to help though. Looks like
Oprah has a lot of favorite things including cakes...

Snowed in and won't be able to make Uncle's b-day this year but still want to make sure he has a cake for his special day. In all honesty, will be sending this to him and just wanted to know your favorite cake of theirs or which ones have you had and your thoughts in general on this bakery.

Usually my Uncle is in Florida by now for his b-day but this yr he's been sick and still stuck up North. I'm down to the wire as his b-day is on Tuesday.

I had planned to send from bakery in Florida that I've used before but shipping rates were about as much as the cake so decided to look at other options closer to home and remembered seeing something about this bakery on "Oprah's Favorite Things" a few yrs ago . She raved about their red velvet cake. He's not really a red velvet fan at least that I know of so I'm thinking of going with the chocolate and vanilla mousse cake. Has anyone had this or any other mousse cakes of theirs before? Supposibly, this is one of a few that "Ess a Bagel" sells. Hate sending something I haven't had myself first but "Hounds" I trust your opinions so please help if you can. I really appreciate all your help as always.
Many thanks.

These cakes are carried by a lot of NY markets and restaurants including Zabars, Grace's Market Place, Ess a Bagel and more. Bergdorf has even served their cakes that's why I'm posting here and not under General Topic Boards.

Please suggest a wedding gift

A Vitamix would be the perfect gift!

My friend and I have decided this is what were going to give together when our friends children get married from now on, thats how much we love ours.
I bought mine at WS (totally unplanned) but there are so many more models and price points to choose from if you check the Vitamix site then what WS carries. Also, when they hv Roadshows at Whole Foods, Costco etc, they also offer great deals as well as QVC.

My other suggestion would be a Le Creuset Cast Iron Dutch Oven as Sharebear mentioned as well.

Almost a yeh….Lentil Soup with Ancient Grains….my first time eating Lentils and really liked. Everything in here seems very healthy except for the high sodium count which is a downer for me (670 mg p/cup)

Recommednation for Hot Chocolate Drink Mix

Soo glad to hear you liked the WS hot chocolate! I know people go nuts when it shows up around the holiday and stock up since you usually can't get it after then. Luckily, on line they still had some and when they offer the free ship you can't beat it when it's on sale. Next year, you'll have to try the Peppermint bark hot chocolate. Sent it to my friends daughter at XMAS and she loved it.

Well sounds like you have plenty of good hot chocolate now at your house with all these great suggestions.I'm definitely bookmarking this thread too.

Just looked again at WS site. Their now out of Classic but they have the sampler pack available. It comes also to $6.39 w/shipping. Great sale! Both the Classic and Peppermint are good but have seen mixed reviews on the salted Carmel. Haven't tried it myself.
If anybody is interested, once on site , click on Sale at top then select Foods and you'll see it. For some reason if you just click on sale won't come up. You can also type hot chocolate in search bar and you'll see it too.

Hi Chemicalkinetics…

Haven't been on the boards for awhile but just ordered another tin of WS hot choco. to send as a gift today and thought about you. Wondering if your enjoying the can you ordered from here?

I sure hope so but forgot to mention, for some reason if its not to your liking, WS has a great return policy. No questions asked and can even return at store although you ordered on line but again hope your enjoying it.

I wanted to thank you too for starting this discussion. Some great suggestions! Will definitely have to try a few.
Its been a long cold winter.

FYI… The hot chocolate I ordered today came to something like $6.30 including shipping. Offered free ship today for Pres, Day and an extra 20% off. Can't beat that when at XMAS its around $19.99. Hope your staying warm too w/ all these hot chocolate ideas.

Recommednation for Hot Chocolate Drink Mix

Funny...
Don't think you'll be disappointed. I just bought 2 more myself to get me thru this winter.
(The diet one just isn't doing it for me today, may need to make a cup of the real thing)
Enjoy!

Recommednation for Hot Chocolate Drink Mix

I just reread your post and now see you are looking for recommendation for "instant" hot cocoa. Although this isn't instant, William Sonoma's hot chocolate that they offer during the holidays is really good and its on sale now too. If you never have had it, you should definitely give it a try and today (1-27) their also offering free shipping.
I send so many of these as gifts during the holidays and everyone seems to love it. The classic is great as well as the Peppermint. I gave my friends daughter the Peppermint Bark one at XMAS this yr and she also loved this one as well.

I'm embarrassed to say, but as I'm typing this I'm waiting for my hot water and making myself a cup of instant hot cocoa too. I'm having Swiss Miss "Diet" cocoa. Definitely not Chow worthy, but if you need to be good and cut calories, only 25 cal. p/cup. Not bad for diet, but no comparison to the real deal.

I have both WS and Burdicks hot chocolate in my house now..both delish but I drink to much hot cocoa to be having them more then once a day so the diet helps. Sometimes, I put a few shavings from either in the diet one.
(Both WS and Burdicks are shaved chocolate not a powder)Both really really good!

Washing Fruits and Vegetables

That is a scary! Definitely wash!!! and make sure you keep your immune system strong.....

Just reinforces you don't know all that your food has been exposed to before you buy it and take it home. Same goes for when you eat out at restaurants and the corners they cut.

Washing Fruits and Vegetables

I use to wonder the same thing till I saw a kid touching all the avocados in the grocery store one day. Really grossed me out and couldn't even buy one that day. Soo, yes I do wash all my fruits and vegetables even my frozen berries that are supposably organic and triple washed. Sometimes I even put dish soap and wash the apples I buy since I like to eat the skin and think also of times where the apples have fallen on the grocery floor when I reached for one.
Just recently I had this same conversation with one of the workers in the produce dpt at Whole Foods and she suggested I use the vegetable/fruit wash. Since I was away from home was planning on getting it this week since I'm home now but like the idea of making that Vinegar and Water Spray that Chemicalkinetics mentioned above too.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 4th quarter 2012 [old]

Initially was replying to Ruth's post reg; "carrots are better then chips" but appreciated all the other healthy info regarding cucumbers and red peppers as well. I usually try to eat so healthy and watch what I eat but being home so much now and not working sometimes leads to mindless eating so just bringing these alternatives to the forefront has gotten me to get back on track. So thanx again for your help...

Totally agree. Thanks for reminding me. Will start buying the baby carrots at the same time as well as red peppers and plastic bag small portions of each so it will be just as easy to grab as my pretzel slims w/out the unnecessary carbs as well as being much healthier. Thanx everyone!

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 4th quarter 2012 [old]

The mediterranean hummus is one of my favorite things at TJ. I could easily eat the whole tub in one sitting if I let myself. (I usually buy the "everything" pretzel slims to go with it as the calorie count is low for about 20 of them although this week tried the black bean and quinoa chips. They were good also for a change but usually wind up eating most of the hummus just right out of the tub with a spoon. Its that good!)

20% off Pastry Sale at Williams Sonoma-Today Only

Just ordered some croissants myself. Even though their shipped overnight from the vendor, it takes a little over a week to process each order. I also found out that I could ask to have a "Holiday Hold"
put on these and that way they would ship a little later and arrive closer to XMAS. Only way to do this though is if you place your order by phone. Online doesn't allow you to do this. Can still mention "PASTRYSALE" and get the discount too.

20% off Pastry Sale at Williams Sonoma-Today Only

Includes those wonderful croissants as well as alot of their other pastries. Does say there is a limited supply at 20% off so guess best to order asap if interested.

Also on a side note, last year I signed up for their Reserve Membership which was $30.00 for the year. With this, most things on their site ship free and during the year I also received several promotional sales that were just offered exclusively to us. I never thought I would say this, but it was more then
worth it. If you think about it, just 1 order of croissants or anything else for that matter, is atleast $10.00 or more in shipping. So if you need to send any presents during the holidays from here, its definitely a good deal. I have enjoyed
the convenience of not having to run to the store for my Illy Coffee on a regular basis as well. So much easier to just click away. Just a thought.

Jupiter Seafood Recs

My best friend recently moved to Jupiter and although I haven't been myself to theses places, their definitely on our list to go when I visit her. "Leftover's Cafe" and Jettys as others mentioned for sure. I know she likes both of these places alot.

"Flash Grille" in Hobe Sound. - She recently went when her mom and some friends visited for the day. They all really liked it. I think she said they're only opened Thurs. -Sun now but I would call to be sure.

"Cafe d'Artisite" in Jupiter- I know she's been several times. Although it is a french restaurant, they always have a fish entree to choose from.

"Courtyard Grille" in Hobe Sound- upscale place but suppose to be very good.

Oh, what I wouldn't do to eat at any of these place now or just have some seafood. When I move back to Fl., hopefully real soon, I think I'll be eating seafood almost every meal too. (I moved temporarily to a place where the seafood isn't that great and I'm missing it big time especially after living on the coast my whole life and having access to some of the best seafood all year)

Help me pack a little more protein into banana bread

Yes, I would try the Greek yogurt too in place of the sour cream. Just to give you an idea, a 7oz container of 2% Greek Fage has 20 grams of protein. The no fat version has slightly less.

You could also opt just to have a protein shake along with your slice of banana bread each morning and solve everything. Thats basically what I do to make sure I'm getting enough protein with breakfast everyday. I use a whey protein powder and just mix it with water, I have 20 grams of protein each morning. If you start adding fruit then you get into more carbs. I'm sure it would be okay to also add it to the batter if you prefer but think you would consistently know how much protein you were getting each morning the other way.

I also like the Chia seed that MoCoMe mentioned. I try to sprinkle them into everything. Some say they have a nutty flavor but I don't notice anything. They are very high in fiber and the richest known vegetable source of Omega 3 fatty acids. They have 3x the antioxidants of blueberries, more calcium then milk, more iron then spinach, and is a better protein source then beans and soy. (I compared the ground flaxseed I have with the bag of chia seeds and the CSeeds almost has double. For 1 tblspn CS= 2.5gm protein vs 2 tblspn Flax= 3gm protein) I know your recipe calls for flaxseed meal so it may be different along with the consistency factor but in general you should definately try the CS sometimes and see what you think. Good luck!

Olive oil (Armando Manni and/or other premium oils)

Williams-Sonoma now has "Manni Oils"n some of their stores too. I was surprised when I
was talking to the manager at the Time Warner Center in NYC about something else and we got on the oil topic and she told me they had "Manni Oils"in their store and not just thru their catalog.

I thought if any of the stores were to carry it, this would make the most sense since Thomas Keller's restaurant is right there and he is a huge fan of this oil but she told me she thought other large " big city" WS would also have it in their stores. Also happened to mention how Manni himself came in their store and told them all about his oils....how neat that must have been!

Couldn't believe it when I saw it in the WS near me this past week-end in Ann Arbor. Its a nice WS but the mall is not one that you would call upscale in any way. I think I knew alot more about the oil then any of the employees working there. It will be interesting to see how long they carry it atleast in this WS.

Thanks Chowhounds for this wonderful find! I've been researching this since I saw it first mentioned here on the boards several years ago....I even had called my AMEX back in the summer to see if they knew of any place I could order it in the states soo was
really excited when I saw it on the WS website. I think they are also offering free shipping on it now too. Bought several as xmas gifts now just have to buy another one for myself.
(This was listed in a book I saw " 100 Things To Buy Before You Die". Hopefully, I still have some time.)
