Le Creuset vs. Staub

Glass actually IS porous. It's why you can get calcium deposits built up over time on your windows from rain or sprinklers; the molecules have pits and tiny surface variations in which to settle.

White chocolate ice cream?

Godiva makes it, and you can find it at Gelsons, Bristol Farms, and Mayfair.

Fresh Goat; Where to buy in L.A.?

A friend of mine is going to make Birria for me. Where can we find a good butcher in L.A. that has fresh goat meat?

BLD on beverly blvd.

Similar experience here for brunch - over cooked eggs, dry muffin, spotty service with a busser who kept wanting to take our plates while we were holding forks mid-air. Nothing special at all.

Dinner, on the other hand, was a very nice affair. We sat at the counter and the bartender was an excellent server, offering sugestions on food that would pair well with our wine selections from the better than average list. The steak was flavorful, succulent and perfectly cooked, and the greens were fresh and delicately dressed. Brunch C-, dinner B+.

Nasty Little Treats

I was traveling through the jungle in Burma, and a local who wanted to treat us to a tasty snack took a smoking stump of wood and shoved it into a tree trunk, from which thousands upon thousands of fire ants came streaming out. Once the ants had evacuated, the tribesman reached in and scooped out handfuls of ant eggs, which were then wrapped in thick green leaves from the canopy overhead. He dropped them in the coals of a fire and waited a few minutes until they were smoking, and pulled them out, handing each of us our own packet. I opened mine to let it cool, and then licked out the goo that had formed. It tasted like the most heavenly smooth, oddly sweet and mellow custard you have ever eaten. Delicious.

You are likely to not have a good meal at a restaurant if . .

I disagree - there are tour buses pulling up to some of the best roadside restaurants I've ever eaten at, in Thailand. Absolutely delicious, fresh and clean.

Your favorite vanilla extract...?

I used the Trader Joe's paste throughout the holiday baking spree, and it worked just fine, but not better than any pure extracts. The first ingredient in the paste is sugar, though, and the flavor of it is a little metallic due to a gum additive to give it the paste texture. It is nice to have the little pulverized specks of bean dust in there for aesthetics but thats about the only advantage I could tell....
