"Great" Restaurant Names

There's a place in Portland Oregon called "Sauce Box". I love it -- it just sounds sort of dirty.

There's also a nice restaurant called Gilt.

Making Sushi Rolls

wait until the rice is at least room temp, if not a little cooler. you can sort of stir it once in a while (not too often, or you'll smoosh it into a paste) to let the steam escape. be sure to use "sushi rice", and throw in a little rice vinegar + a tsp of sugar to insure it gets sticky enough to stay together. sometimes i cheat and throw the rice in the fridge for a little while. you'd probably find soy paper at an asian market. i always use nori (toast it quickly first, then very very lightly dampen it with wet fingers). keep your finger tips damp while working and use less rice than you think you need. work quickly! it takes a bit of practice. good luck! have fun. invent cool new sushi.

How many jumbo or large prawns in a pound?

I'm sure it's not rocket science (and I could just call the cute guy at my local foo-foo market fish counter and ask him), but does anyone know how many prawns there are in a pound? Jumbo vs. Large?

New Yorker coming to LA - Hollywood

Buddha's Belly (7475 Beverly Blvd) for dinner. Pinkberry for frozen yogurt. Trendy, I know, but I saw Kirsten Dunst there last week!

Best Noodle House in the Sunset?

Taking a day off next week to go to the DeYoung and goof off in or around the park. Any suggestions on the best nearby noodle joint?

Is it a flipper or a spatula at your house?

In our house, we say "spatch" for either one, scraper or flipper.

What's up with Flipper Pie? I've only read about it -- I guess it's a real thing? Not an urban myth, as I had hoped.

Flipper is a punk band.

San Francisco restaraunts near Pacific Heights

For a true SF experience, if you love shell fish, try Swan Oyster Depot on Polk Street. It's totally old-school San Francisco. No frills, counter seating only (no tables). It's only open during the day. They have the freshest seafood on the planet. Stop in for a couple of oysters and a fresh Anchor Steam Beer. The best.

Greens menu??

wow. i've never heard anyone say the service at green's was anything less than stellar. whoever said they had a bad experience must have been there on a rare "off" day. i say go. the food is great and they have a nice wine list. i've had a few star-sightings there. never know who you'll see.

Birthday Dinner in one week. HELP!

If you're looking for something relatively inexpensive, there's this great Vietnamese place called Pho Van (1919 SE 82nd Ave). It's kind of out in funky-town, but the food is phenomenal and the space is pretty big. Not a ton of veggie offerings, but enough to satisfy the vegetarians. I was just there the other day and had a fantastic meal.

Cooking for non-food people

Might I suggest new friends. Seriously, the only thing to do is keep it simple when they come over. I always ask: Is there anything you guys won't eat?
