Loquats: Know where I can pick some?

Hey, I live in LA and am looking for loquats. They grow all over LA and wanted to know if anyone had a tree or friends with a tree who might be willing to let me pick some? Most people who have a loquat tree don't seem to take advantage. They're in season now.

I'll return the favor by straightening something up in their yard or bringing them some loquat jam which I want to make. Something commensurate. I live in Echo Park and work in Santa Monica, so cover most of the city on any given day.

Let me know. Thanks!

Big Soft German Pretzels on a Sunday morning?

I was at the Red Lion last weekend for drink and ordered their pretzel. Not a huge one, but it was warm, fluffy and nicely salted. Perfect accompaniment for a nice glass of Spaten Oktoberfest.

Also, Red Lion feels more central to the city than the stuff in Venice and The Valley if you're not up for the drive.

Anyone done Wurstkuche?

The restaurant is pronounced Vurst-kuch-e. I guess that's how it's spelled, but it's certainly not said like Vurst-cook-huh. The kuch part has that back of the throat "ch" sound from German or Hebrew. The "e" is pronounced like the end of "hey." It means sausage kitchen which is a good name, I think.

I went the other week (November 22nd) and thought the food was average at best.

I had the rattlesnake and rabbit and thought the meat part was really tasty. However, my bun got really soggy with the onions and peppers and totally fell apart which was a pain.

Also, I hate to say it, but the fries were kinda shitty. Definitely not the crispy, fluffy Belgium fries I had in mind. They were more like soggy bar fries.

My beer was expensive ($2.50 more than I pay for the same beer at El Prado in Echo Park) and the pour was...poor. 25% head is too much.

Lastly, I think that $40 for a shared fries, two dogs and two beers is really steep.

Hate to crush the place like this, but I'm just telling how it is. Hopefully everyone else has a better experience because I'd like to see the place thrive.

Great Kabob, Shawerma, Gyros - Pico and Fairfax Area FINALLY!

Thanks guys. I should give Spitz a shot seeing how it's about as close as I'm going to get in LA.

Not in HB too often and when I am in that area (OC) I try to work my way over to the Boiling Crab for a meal. Can't beat it.

Do they serve Döner Kebab at City Best?

I have been looking everywhere trying to find a place that serves Döner the right way. I heard about Sptiz in Eagle Rock, but after reading up on them, it seems they don't do it in the traditional Turkish/German style.

Any suggestions?

Vote for the best Hole-In-The-Wall (Michelin-style)

I second Samosa House. That place is seriously awesome.

Cook's Double Dutch

Went there with some friends not too long ago. The food was pretty good, although the entree's were much better than the appetizers which weren't as good as their descriptions. My boyfriend had the brisket and liked it although it wasn't comparable to his moms. My stuffed pork roast was delicious and was served with the grain of the day that happened to be lavender rice. It was the best part of my meal!

Service was incredibly slow although the restaurant was practically empty.

Need a Coronado Island (SD) Reco

Thanks much for the response. I checked the menu at 1500Ocean and it looks great. Apparently one of their apps was listed as a top dish in 2007 by Bon Appetite, so I'm sure the rest of the restaurant can't be bad. Looking forward to dinner.

Need a Coronado Island (SD) Reco

Hey,

Taking my clients out to dinner after the Comicon show in SD next week. They're staying at the Hotel Del Coronado and was looking for a nice place close by. Price really isn't an option, but there is a vegetarian in the group.

Can anyone help? Thanks.

Osteria Mozza?

According to the hostess at Mozza a few weeks ago, it was supposed to open this week. She said that the restaurant would begin accepting reservations the day the it opens.

Restaurant Reco for Dinner with My Client

Oh man, Fleur de Lys is awesome. I don't go up to the Bay Area often, but did for my girlfriend's sister's birthday earlier this year. Ate at Fleur with her folks and loved it. Amazing service, great cocktails and a killer piece of venision. To speak to the service, one of the diners is a recovering alcoholic. After turning down wine at dinner and asking about possible alcohol content in another dish, the restaurant got the picture and when they served us a sorbet between courses, he was served one without a liquor. Didn't even have to ask. Very thoughful.

Thanks for all your other restaurant recommendtaions. Wish we could try them all.

Restaurant Reco for Dinner with My Client

Thanks all for your help. Because of the conference we're in town for, many of the restaurants we wanted to try were booked until late. However, we got a table at Scala's and are excited to try it. Thanks again.

Restaurant Reco for Dinner with My Client

I was also recommended Boulevard, Scala's Bistro, Farallon, and the Fifth Floor.

Do you know anything about these places?

Again, your help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Restaurant Reco for Dinner with My Client

Thanks so much for these recommendations.

I love the menu at Ame, but the variety of the foods at Myth may be better for a larger group. Now I need to see if I can get a reservation.

Restaurant Reco for Dinner with My Client

Hi All,

I am trying to arrange a dinner with my colleagues and our clients in San Francisco. I'm from LA and am mostly unfamiliar with the San Fran dining scene. I already checked the boards for recos, but most responses seems a bit old so I thought I would rekindle this discussion.

We would like to go somewhere that's not too corporate (contemporary and fun please), not too loud (so we can have good conversations) and offers a selection of sea food in addition to meat and foul (one client is a pescatarian). There will be eight diners.

Our hotel in located by Union Square on Stockton St. and close would be nice, but we're open to traveling for a nice meal.

Thanks in advance.

Favorite restaurant in Marina Del Rey/Venice

Also, don't forget Primativo. Great wine and tapas. Not sure how unique it would be for a out of towner. Or AXE is cool. It's definitely unique and the star watching there is usually pretty good.

Taqueria Sanchez

As long as your are taking about that area, you should also include Rutts Hawaiian around the corner from Sakura and Sanchez. Their Royal bowls rule (get them fried and be sure to use the Teriyaki sauce) and are an awesome hang-over cure. Also, I recommend their passion fruit slush and the Hawaiian bread french toast. (The french toast is a great share dish to offset the Royals.)
