The Chickery - Spadina South of Richmond (David Adjey's new casual spot)
I was there for lunch yesterday. David Adjey was there, doing quality control and chatting up the customers. He even dropped by our table to chat for a bit - he was mainly gloating about how this was quality fast food. I didn't have the heart to tell him that the chicken fingers were underseasoned, and so was the gravy, and the bbq sauce tasted too much like tomato paste. And I usually think that restaurants use too much salt - this was the complete opposite! The collard greens and the mac and cheese were very nice though. I got the 4 chicken fingers and that was a decent portion for lunch, definitely not too much.
non-Winterlicious prix fixe menus in Toronto, Winter 2012
Bistro Camino has a 3 course for around $25-$27 if I remember correctly. Near Main and Danforth. Excellent food.
cheap and cheerful around Main and Danforth
Bistro Camino is excellent. Just a heads up - they are closed for the month of January 2012, opening again on February 1 (looking forward to it!)
You have $10 for a meal, where do you go in Toronto?
Mixed gyros pita at Messini on Danforth. $4.35 will deliciously fill you right up.
Prairie Style Pizza in Toronto?? Please??
I think that the skimpy on the toppings thing is a GTA phenomenon, not sure why. Ottawa places are generally much better, like Gabriel's - they actually told me not to get double cheese once because they already put so much on there!
Ethiopian restaurant in the GTA?
I like Rendez-Vous better than Lalibela across the street on Danforth. Really enjoyed their kitfo and friendly service.
Delivery in the East end/Beach?
Diamond Pizza's pizza is probably the best in the area for delivery (Danforth Pizza House doesn't deliver). Their chicken wings are on the small side.
Shawarmas in Toronto
Has anyone tried Arax Shawarma in the Beaches? I just heard about it this week and I'm thinking about trying it out...
I was in Ottawa last weekend and dropped by Shawarma Palace on Rideau St. So good!

+1 for Bistro Camino. However, last time we were there they told us that they were going on vacation and closing for a few weeks in August. Better call ahead!

Danforth & Woodbine, O'Connor Drive Best bets For Late Saturday Lunch
I agree. Jawny Bakers has very normal sports bar style fare. Nothing that will blow your mind or that is worth coming back for.

Lalibela Ethiopian on Danforth near Donlands - Anyone tried it?
+1 for Rendezvous. Was there yesterday and really enjoyed their kitfo.
Looking for Shwarma around Coxwell and Danforth
Picked up a couple of chicken shawarma sandwiches yesterday. The chicken was white meat and well seasoned, liked it very much. Not too fond of their pickles and pickled turnips. They have garlic sauce, but it is not very thick. Next time I will ask for more garlic sauce and no pickles or turnips.
Excuse my ignorance, but what is foul?
Looking for Shwarma around Coxwell and Danforth
Does Sultan have "toumeh" garlic sauce (the thick stuff dreams are made of)? For me, that completes a shawarma. Seems like only true lebanese places have it.
My favorite Ontario Wineries
Heading to Niagara-on-the-Lake next weekend, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend wineries where I could find great wines to bring back. This thread seems a bit outdated and I couldn't find a newer one, perhaps there are new up-and-comers? Thanks in advance!
Shawarmas in Toronto
Good to know that Milo's is still there, thanks for confirming. Definitely the best shawarma in Toronto.
Diamond Pizza (East York)
I started ordering from Diamond about two months ago and never had any contact with the "crazy lady"... Maybe she's no longer there? Haven't had any issues with delivery times either.
Diamond Pizza (East York)
Had the poutine last night. They use shredded cheese, mozzarella, which is a major faux pas, and the gravy isn't that great either. The fries are fine I guess. At least it's better than Harbour 60's fois gras poutine nightmare, which also uses shredded cheese and barely any gravy, with a couple scorched fois gras leftover pieces on top; but that's for another thread.
I agree, the variety at Diamond's is a great plus. There's something for everyone, and it's all edible.
Picked up our order for the first time last night. Won't be doing that again - the place is sort of crusty and smoky with a high sketchiness factor, and seeing how the food is prepared wasn't very appetizing. I'd rather not know where it came from. Out of sight out of mind.
Still the pizza is really good.
Diamond Pizza (East York)
I'm a big fan of Diamond Pizza. I always get the 5 toppings for the price of 3 special and use 2 toppings for double cheese. This is the best delivery pizza I've had in Toronto (the Main Street location anyway - haven't tried their other location). And I love the dough ball in the middle, that is so old school!
I've also tried the wings, which are small but good, and fairly priced IMO. The souvlaki special is also very decent.
Has anyone tried their poutine? Just wondering if they use cheese curds... Can't really go wrong for $3.75 though. Ok that's it I'm totally going there tonight.

Underwhelmed and Overpriced at Harbour Sixty Steakhouse (long)
We were at Harbour 60 over the weekend, on a gift certificate given to us by friends. I've figured out that there are two rules to dining at Harbour 60:
1) Don't spend your own money. Everything is overpriced.
2) Stick to the basic steakhouse fare. They are incapable of executing anything else. The seared tuna was cold as if it was just taken out of the refrigerator. The grilled prawn in the soupe du jour came complete with poop chute, which I realized as I was eating it.
We decided to try the fois gras poutine. What a mistake that was. The fries were so so, the cheese was actually grated marbled cheddar cheese, which is considered a crime in Quebec. Gravy was one blotch fully absorbed by the other ingredients when it go to our table. The fois gras was the worst. There were only 3 small pieces on the poutine, and it was scorched beyond recognition and tasted like grilled prawns (I'm guessing they used the same grill). What they did to the fois gras should be considered animal abuse! This was nothing like Martin Picard's fois gras poutine. It was just an insult on a plate. Seriously, if you can't execute something properly, just take it off your menu.
The NY Strip was very good though, and done as I ordered it. The rib eye, not so much, but still ok.
For desert, we tried the Baked Alaska. It was more like a Scorched Alaska after the 1/2 cup of flaming alcohol they poured on it at the table ran out of juice. I highly recommend it if you enjoy eating carbon.
With tax and tip we ended up around $300, which included a $30 half bottle of red.
It was very cold sitting next to the window since it was about -15 outside and the windows are crap. Not that impressed with the servers either, I've seen better at Swiss Chalet.
Filipino restaurants.
Looking forward to trying Max's in Vaughan. It's one of our go to places when we're in Manila. But what made them pick Vaughan?
The Grindhouse on King Street
I've been to Grindhouse twice and I highly recommend it. Last time I got the big boy burger (8 oz) done to medium rare and with goat cheese. It was fabulous. The fries are great with their aioli, which is simply delicious. I will be going back at every opportunity I get.
Belgian Pearl Sugar
Based on the posts it looks like those places carry Swedish pearl sugar, which is smaller than Belgian pearl sugar, but I guess it might do the trick.
Belgian Pearl Sugar
Does anyone know where I could find Belgian pearl sugar in Toronto? I want to make me some Liege waffles....
Best place to buy oysters and advice on transport
+1 for Diana's. We got a box of 48 choice Malpeques yesterday for $29.99. Very fresh and delicious.
ISO Burr Grinder in GTA ($150 range price max)
I bought a Capresso Infinity burr grinder a couple of years ago at Espresso Planet on Dixie. Not sure if the store still exists (their website is not working right now), but the grinder is excellent, I use it every day and have not had any problems with it. I believe that it cost around $150.
Runner looking for tasty (whey) protein powder - ideas?
Last time I got whey powder, I went for the Kaizen brand, chocolate flavor, which I found at Costco. Very good taste, whether you mix it in milk or water, and it dissolves fairly well. I use a hand blender to mix it, it's easy and fast.
Shawarmas in Toronto
I tried Milo's recently and it is definitely the best shawarma I've had in Toronto. Very similar to what you would get in Ottawa. Great chicken, garlic sauce and turnips.
Also tried Ali Baba's on Peter Street. Not good at all. Nothing was fresh and no garlic sauce. Anoush on Peter is similar to Ali Baba's. A little bit better but still not very good.
