admiralackbar's Profile
Boston restaurant for a 2 year old and 6 year old.
Aura Restaurant at the Seaport Hotel hosts "fine dining family styles" on friday nights from 5-8pm. They have a a room in the back of the restaurant set up with fun toys for kids while parents can eat.
Who is the new chef at Pava?
I am sure its Michala lawson (sp) the person who has Rocca in the southend.
Safe Restaurants with Peanut Allergy?
Chef Rachel Klein has a peanut allergy so she is very sensitive to people with allergies. Her kitchen at OM was peanut free, but she has moved on to Aura restaurant at the seaport hotel. Call the restaurant and ask to speak with her about what she can do. I have a black pepper allergy and I would call ahead and she would make special dishes for me.
Radius: Beard-worthy?
The people at the beard house do not nominate the chefs. Any chef can get nominated. They just need to have all their friends nominate him or her and get the most amount of nominee votes. You can find the nominee application on line.
John Delpha
campagna in waltham? I also heard that he was the chef at ken oringers taco joint.
Nice Food/Atmosphere, but also kid friendly in Needham/Newton Highlands?
blue on highland. this place looks very fancy/funky from the outside, but it is SUPER kid friendly. they have crayons and coloring books, highchairs and kids menu. This is where we go when we want to go out and have martini & have the kid with us.
Disappointing Rialto Restaurant Week Experience
A restaurant of Rialto's caliber should not be making amateur mistakes, like undercooked risotto. I personally do not have an issue telling a waiter if I have a problem, but most people actually DO feel very uncomfortable expressing their unhappiness, especially at a more upscale restaurant. you could also place blame on the waiter for not picking up on the unhappiness at the table.
Boston Globe Review [on Angela's - moved from Boston board]
I am not really a fan of the herald, but I think Matt Shaeffer usually does a really good job. I find him to be pretty honest, does not seem to beat around the bush & I like his sense of humour. I was not a fan of Alison Arnett's writing. yawn & snore. I am trying to decide if Devra first is a bit silly and out of her league or someone to be taken seriously...to soon to tell. I should probably start reading the dig now as well...lol.
Boston Globe Review [on Angela's - moved from Boston board]
I totally agree with you. Maybe if people were actually informed on how the rating scale worked (that is if they read it..lol) people would "get it", including myself.
Working in restaurants in NYC I was "raised" or "conditioned" on the Ruth Reichl, Grimes & Bruni way of rankings, so of course when I started reading the globe I was kind of surprised & curious as to how they worked. Places like Angela's would have probably ended up in the $25 and under reviews or given a nod by Asimov or fabricant.
So, in Globe when the review is in are they than later organized, maybe on line, put in a group with comparable establishments?
This post started because I actually was looking for a a four star restaurant to take a friend to for a special occasion and I kept running across places that were equally ranked but obviously very different.
My Restaurant Week
I would def cut the majority on your list and include a couple not listed...
cut:
Vox Populi
Ruth's Chris
McCormick & Schmicks
Turner Fisheries
Smith 7 Wollensky's
Gaslight
Petit Robert
Sibling Rivalry...blech!!!
ADD:
Rendezvous
Upstairs on the Square
Sorrelina (room is amazing/food tasy)
catch
toro
B&G
lumiere
Boston Globe Review [on Angela's - moved from Boston board]
I read the globe's review on Angela's cafe today and while I cannot say I have had the pleasure of eating there, I do not really understand how they recieved 3 stars. I find that the way the globe awards stars is a little irresponsible & hard to take seriously. Although the food at Angela's may be excellent, an establishment that recieves 3 stars should be accountable for ambiance, crystal, presentation etc. I made a point of looking up Angela's on line and it def is not a 3 star looking establishment. I read both the nyt & globe reviews every week and I think the new york times does a great job on ranking and maybe the globe should look for direction there. Basically my point is how can Angela's cafe and No 9 park both have recieved 3 stars. Just so everyone understands, I am in no way bashing Angelas cafe, just using their review as an example.
dinner for 7 tonight: Mantra or Via Matta?
Def go to via matta. If you go to Mantra you may be one the few tables having dinner and thats no fun for a celebration. Its to bad Mantra turned into more of a nightclub. I wonder if their new project banq will also end up that way.
Michelina's new roost
I believe the owners are the joshua tree group, which also own tonic ?
Need a restaurant for baby shower, metro west area
The Metropolitan (MET) Club, on route 9. They have two private diningrooms. Totally affordable and a bit hipper. I was there for brunch awhile back and the Red Sox GM (Theo Epstein) was there having his wifes babyshower.
Last minute anniversary advice: Dante's or Salts?
How about a tasting menu in the soiree room at Upstairs on the square. If you call and tell them it is a special night I am pretty sure they will do something special for you yadayadayada. The woman who own the place are really into people pleasing.
Last minute anniversary advice: Dante's or Salts?
Salts if def a better culinary experience but the room is small and nothing super special. If you want a showy place with a view and want to dress up a bit and hang out in the lounge, go to Dante. The food at Dante is not bad, its more pedestrian compared to salts, wich is FAB! Rendezvous is loud and more like a everyday place to eat. It is still very tasty though.
Radius burger wins top honors
Hate too break it to everyone but Bartleys burgers are patties from a meat company (Kinneally) meat co.). In fact I know of a couple of other places that use the same exact burgers, I know, I was shocked as well.. You cannot compare a hand made seasoned burger from Radius to a punched out pattie from bartleys...sorry :)

Anywhere to get really top notch whole leaf tea?
big fan of christinas and the MEM tea.
Domani temp. closed
The entire hotel is in the process of being renovated & during the renovation, they flooded the domani dinngroom & kitchen.
Michelena is out and, from I hear consulting on a HUGE multi level project in the financial district. I cant wait, he was too talented for Saint.
South End openings
although, I am always happy to see another restaurant open. I do not understand how the southend can support so many more restaurants. Am I crazy to question this?
Another Eastern Standard
I heard that Eastern standard is opening a location in the Seaport District. Anyone hear anything about this?
Molecular gastrotomy: where to experience it?
boston public is way more mainstream. Most chefs that were doing more avant garde cuisine like maffeo gave it up because there is simply not a strong enough market for it.
Molecular gastrotomy: where to experience it?
I would say take a trip to Chicago. Thats where all the molecular gastronomy is really happenning. More advanced than NYC, except maybe wylie dufresne. Gargoyles is not a good example. Clio is better.
Best in South Boston?
heard today that the old chef from OM is working on a restaurant in the seaport district in one of the hotels.
boston wine expo
Did anyone check out the wine expo today??? How was it? Any food pairings ?
Fine dining options for vegetarians and vegans?
Om does not do vegan or vegetarian monthly dinners anymore since the chef left.
Seaport District
There seems to be alot of action and building going on in the seaport district. Anybody know of anything interesting going on or where too check out for lunch/dinner/cocktails ?
