Seeking hidden gem or little known food stores/specialty stores?

I posted this to the Manhattan board but also want to know about Brooklyn, Th Bronx, Queens and Staten Island...

Hey,

I'm looking to explore hidden gem or little known food or specialty stores. Maybe it's a small Mexican grocery store or a really great chocolate studio. Not restaurants or carts but places that sell retail foods items. I've grown up in NYC and really want to find food related places I've never been to! Ethnic grocers, pastry shops - give me anything you love!

Thanks guys.

Best, favorite and funniest food quotes kids, quotes...

What are some of your favorite food quotes? Gotta love food, gotta love me some funny quotes...or at least thoughtful ones...here are some of my faves:

With Gourmet discontinued by Conde Nast, what's your favorite cooking mag?

It's been 2 months but I'm still mourning Gourmet.

Here's to another vote for Saveur. But don't forget to check out the lesser known gastronomic publications: Gastronomica, Diners Journal, The Edible publications, The Art of Eating...

Also, in France, Elle has a great sister mag called Elle a la Table (too bad it's not in English though).

Chows: Where do you go for your food news on TV?

I watch the Nightline segments on chefs and try to keep up with any food reports on, say, 60 minutes but is it me or is there a dearth of food news programming on TV? Diary of a Foodie is great but not so much on the "news" tip. No Reservations covers some topics sometimes but o course it's more about "food related travel"

For certain there is tons online and in print solely dedicated to food & current food news but why not TV? I'm curious...We need something don't we?

Now it's time to explore a more Parisienne Paris-need your help!!

Hello,

I've been living in Paris for 8 months now (finishing my culinary diploma) and am completely in love with this awesome and gorgeous city. I am moving from the 6th to the 3rd this weekend and will only be in Paris for another 6 weeks so it's time to kick up le fooding into high gear. I've been to many great places - Ledoyen, L'Ami Jean, Josephine et al..but would love to explore a more Parisienne side of Paris (if that makes sense). I adore places like Le Bistro Paul Bert (can't hear a lick of English for miles!) and have reservations at Le Chateaubriand as well as Ze Kitchen next week.

I am running through my list and need to add more suggestions, more frenchie places, more new french cuisine!! Give me what you got guys - I have time and a huge appetite!

What about "newer" boulangeries or patisseries? Been to Kayser, Laduree, Pierre Herme, Ble Sucre, Lenotre. Need more!

Thanks in advance for all your help...

Cooking school/class in Athens?

Hello.
Does anyone know of a cooking school or cooking classes in Athens? Will be there this week and would love to take a class for a few hours.

Merci!

Best hamburger in Paris?

I second Coffee Parisien. I'm a NYC-gal with a natural craving for burgers. Coffee Parisien is as good as any in NYC. Which is to say, a very very good burger. Be prepared for service that stinks...however, it's worth it.

Foodie day trips or weekend trips from Paris//France food festivals

I am here for a few months and would love to take day trips or weekend trips via train or bus from Paris. I know Normandy, Champagne and Versailles are popular spots but any other suggestions for a foodie? Normandy is on my list but would love some insider information on where to go for a food lover. For example, are there any food-related festivals in a small town near Paris? Where can I find info on the food festivals of France.

Easter dinner in Paris. What restos would be best for this?

Ciao Chowhounders,

My father will be coming to Paris over the Easter weekend and was thinking of going to dinner on Easter as my apartment is too small to cook a proper meal. Will any restaurants be open? If so, where should we go? Price isn't a huge concern, just want to have a great meal (if possible on a holiday, in NY we all stayed away from dining out on holidays). Any advice is welcome. Even if you tell me to save the nice dinner for another night and eat cheese at home.

Merci.

New Yorker living in Paris for 8 months: Where to eat in the 6th?

Souphie! I was hoping you would reply as I've been searching through the boards and noticed you were quite the expert.

Re: photography in restaurants - before coming to Paris, I worked at an on-line food magazine. We used to do a lot of tastings at night (of course these were formally set up with the chef) and found that a tripod and DSLR were the best BUT it does distract diners if the resto is in service. For me, I use a Canon Power Shot SD 1000, in macro mode. You can see some of the pics on my blog www.gastrogirls.com. Of course, the ones taken in good light come out great, the ones in bad light aren't good at all. Cheers and thanks for all the suggestions! xo

New Yorker living in Paris for 8 months: Where to eat in the 6th?

Hello everyone!

I am a New York City gal living in Paris for 8 months to attend Le Cordon Bleu. I live in the 6th arrondissement and am looking for suggestions for great but not expensive food in the area. I live on Rue de Rennes and have heard a lot about many bistros (Christophe, L'Ami Jean, Le Nemrod) and would love some more suggestions. Specifcally would like to know more French resto's as well as Indian or any other ethnic foods in the area. (I know there are lots in Belleville, but any in the 6th?). I welcome lunch and dinner options! Breakfast is easier since I will probably eat at home or pop into a cafe for a croissant.

I will of course be taking the metro or walking to other areas of Paris during my stay here but am taking it one arrondissement at a time, starting with the 6th since it's where I live.

I've found rue du Buci and love drinking wine there but not so much the food (for dinner, at least).

I hope this wasn't too broad but I am a food lover so welcome any suggestions!

Merci!

Where to buy suckling pig in NYC?

Where does one find a whole suckling pig to roast in NYC? Or is there a site I can order one from?

Going to LA during the holidays - what are the must-eats?

Hi hounders,

I am going to be in LA for a week during the holidays and am looking forward to some laid back fun. I have ressies at Pizza Mozza (yay!) but what other places do I need to hit up? I have limited funds, so I don't want to do anything too expensive or fancy- but one expensive place is ok. I'm open to all sorts of cuisines and areas and am from NYC but am so exicted to be in LA! What are some great places I need to go to? Some insider-only eats? Great Mexican? Sushi? What else? Thanks all!!

Saturday Brunch on Smith or Court Streets

I could not agree with you more! I never post negative reviews but I just did on menupages. The service was horrific! A total nightmare. The food took so long that we just paid the bill and walked out before the food came (we waited an hour). And no one said sorry or anything to us. That place is embarrassing.

Persian in Brooklyn?

Craving good Persian food...where can I find some in Brooklyn? Am willing to pay and go the distance. I know of places in Queens but wondering is there any in BK?

Best Indian in Manhattan

Hey folks,

What do you think are some of the best places to get Indian food in Manhattan? I am finding that excellent Indian isn't so easy to find on this isle. I'm not looking for anything pricey or fancy. Just great food.

Thanks.

What is the atmosphere at the Farm on Adderley?

I want to take my BF here for his birthday but am wondering if it's cozy and romantic? Also, are the waits long on a Saturday night?

Need a cozy wonderful meal for BF's birthday

ahhh! ok...here's some background that may help...we both enjoy great food and great wine and have eaten at many good restaurants but i want to take him someplace neither of us has been... i am thinking of spuluring on Daniel or Jean Georges but not sure if either of them are "cozy"? I was also thinking of The Farm on Adderley in BK (i know that's another posting on another board). I'd prefer to go someplace where you wouldnt usually think of nor go on a regular Friday night dinner. does this help?

Need a cozy wonderful meal for BF's birthday
