July 14 Bastille Day

Les Halles is terrible. Don't go there or any other restaurant in FiDi for that matter.

And yeah, Provence closed a while back.

best new nyc restaurants?

Bar Boulud is only good for charcuterie and Bar Milano is pretty mediocre

My list - 15 East, Momofuku Ko, Centro Vinoteca, Allen & Delancey

Soto non-sushi food is very good but 15 East has superior sushi

Bastille Day this year

Cercle Rouge in Tribeca has a 3 course menu for $40 plus a band.

2nd Timer Foodie - Need a local's view on my plan

def Centro Vinoteca over Morandi, unless if you like Epcot center decor. you can probably get into Centro early but it's pretty busy right now. Bobo needs time - my food was unseasoned and the kitchen is a mess. P*ong you can do later for dessert. I agree with steeltowngrl that Izakaya next to Tia Pol is fun. I'd take the drinks at Pegu over Employees Only though

Bar Stuzzichini - Very Mediocre

For a place with stuzzichini in the name (Italian tapas), isn't it odd that part of the menu is so limited and basic? The room will always be a disaster but the crowd surprised me most of all. When I went it was the oddest mix of a corporate outing in the front bar and huge tables of Jerseyites in the back. Made me almost miss Komegashi (the previous occupant of this soon-to-be-cursed place).

Yolato anyone?

Who says its supposed to be frozen yogurt? That's one product they sell. I've gotten frozen yogurt, which I prefer to pinkberry, and I've also gotten gelato too. Some of the gelato is made with yogurt and some isn't. What's so confusing?

Flat Iron Tapas Bar

I checked the review. He says, "generously apportioned for two or even three people to share" - not 3/4 - and I have to agree. My service was the opposite but restaurants can be inconsistent on that account.

Did the person with the press badge ask your permission to be in the photo? He should have. Also, the reviewer says "both times" he was there so he was there twice. Anyway I really doubt a restaurant reviewer no matter the paper would show a press badge and walk around openly with it. Usually only photographers have them to get access to crime scenes and special events.

Flat Iron Tapas Bar

I was just in Boston and after the Globe review I decided to check out Flat Iron. The food was really good, especially the lemon chicken, oyster shooters, short ribs and thick cut bacon. Lollipops aren't my thing so I went with the fried dough, which I really enjoyed. I liked the space - it is awkwardly shaped but the building is triangular after all. The design is cool and the tables & chairs are comfortable. They also have really good cocktails. The cucumber gin one had a little spicy kick. My server was nice and I didn't have any issues with him.

Kate, I'm a bit confused by your initial write-up though – congrats on your 15 min of fame, by the way! The name of the restaurant is Flat Iron TAPAS Bar and that’s what they serve - small plates. I have to agree with the Herald reviewer on portion size – I found them sufficient or, in some cases, even bigger than I expected for the price – since most items were under $10. I wouldn't expect big dishes or entrée size anything for that price. Also, I don’t really know Boston reviewers but I'm pretty sure the Herald reviewer would go anonymously a few times and then the photographer goes later.

Flat Iron Tapas Bar

I'm going to be in Boston in a few weeks. This place got a very good review in the Globe (3 stars) this week - http://www.boston.com/dining/globe_review/1512
Has anyone been?

overrated restaurants

Per Se - even before the price increases a total rip-off and nowhere as good as French Laundry

Michael Humm - had his food in SF and he showed potential, but not great; ditto for EMP

Any restaurants/chefs committed to Local Foods?

Tasting Room and Telepan immediately come to mind.

restaurants with jacket required?

I read that Gordon Ramsay requires jackets and I know Jean Georges' dining room does

Veritas or Gramercy Tavern?

Recent intel on Cru is not so great. Anyone hear different?

Good/reasonable japanese in West Village?

Try Sumile's new sushi bar. May be a bit more pricey but I imagine the fish is really good.

Veritas or Gramercy Tavern?

The bar at GT is great but I will paraphrase what one of the bartenders said one night about a month ago when someone at the bar asked about the menu changes. He said that there had been some changes but the patron was better off with the old classics "for now". Then again, the next time we had some of the new food - memory a bit like a sieve - and it was very good.

Been a long time since Veritas trip. Is it still as good as the rep?

15 east (very mini review)

how much were the rolls?

Beer

DBA is pretty good but I find the crowd too snooty. Gramercy Tavern has a great bar and a good beer list. Another good place is Waterfront Ale House on 2nd Ave.

15 east (very mini review)

Thanks for the early report, it sounds promising. I'm very interested in 15 East and look forward to checking it out. I'd read that they were opening for sushi only in the beginning - with larger menu items to come - so it sounds like that is still the case.

The sushi chef being from Jewel Bako, I wouldn't really expect rolls or edamame. Good to hear that the quality of fish & rice struck you as top notch. $75 for the amount of food you listed in omakase - "8-10 pieces of sashimi, a miso soup, and 10 pieces or so of sushi" - sounds pretty good and in the range of Yasuda. I'm not sure I understand the math on this though: "3 pieces of sushi, two rolls and a beer cost $75"? seems like you had a lot more food than that?
