Thanksgiving Dinner in Madison, WI

After they remodeled the cafeteria, Memorial Union discontinued the Thanksgiving buffet. I was sorry to see it go -- the atmosphere was pleasant, the food was good -- especially the fudge-bottom pie -- and the price was right.

The Union website offers Thanksgiving dinner to go, but they don't server it at the Union any more.

If I had to choose between State St. Brats and the Great Dane, I'd definitely go with the Great Dane. The Great Dane has a varied and excellent menu -- bar favorites and more -- while State St. Brats has ... brats. The Great Dane also has a great selection of beers brewed on the premises, plus home-made cream soda and root beer for the 16-year-old.

But instead of the Cahill Main location, which is out in the wilds of Fitchburg, I'd suggest the original location, at the corner of King St. & East Doty St., a block off the Square.

We took our 16 year old daughter to eat at State St. Brats around 8:30 last Saturday. She was was adults, so there was no real problem getting past the bouncers at the door.

If you're planning a party there, you might want to check beforehand with the management, but I don't your daughter's age would be a problem.

If you're already at the Farmer's Market, you'll probably want to go across the street to the Cafe Soleil, which is run by L'Etoile, the famous restaurant upstairs. The food is not solely vegetarian, but there are plenty of vegetarian choices, including wonderful baked goods.
