Sunday lunch or brunch in Hollywood
Coming to LA on Sunday 1/14 to go to a 1:20 show at the El Capitan theater. Last time had a nice lunch at Musso and Frank, but they aren't open on Sundays. Considering La Campanile but it doesn't look all that close. Vert would be fine if it opened before noon. Read a suggestion for Hungry Cat. I'm not a huge traditional breakfast food fan. Any suggestions?
SD - Steingarten link?
Well for someone who didn't MOVE here and has traveled(eaten) across the country and to Europe repeatedly, I'm becoming pretty proud of San Diego. To fully understand how far we've come, you would have to have experienced the restaurant scene of the 1960's. When a place like Roberto's taco stands could hit North County and change the eating habits of the locals, you get an idea of how "white bread" things were. I was the only child in my class who had eaten Japanese food (Monterey), when our Japanese American teacher brought in rice rolled in nori. No one had ever tried escargot when my jr. high teacher extolled their garlicy virtues. Before the post Vietnam influx of refugees arrived, San Diego county was a wasteland of bland, indifferent food. Given how far we've come, I expect great things in the future. Now if Zagat would recognize us as a market and we could get our own board...
Thai in San Diego?
We tried a new place in North Park, called Thai Spice, I think. It's just a block or two west of 30th on El Cajon blvd. I really enjoyed the Tom (coconut) soup and the panang curry. There is also a little place on 30th between El Cajon blvd and University. The owners are very nice and I've always enjoyed the food.
Now this may not sound great, but, there is a Thai buffet in Clairmont called Thai Cafe. Not everything is great, but the variety is fun and the price is very reasonable.
German food in San Diego?
Sausage King on Washington is the best I have found for cold cuts and sausages, wurst salad, etc. I love real wienerschnitzel, but haven't had a really good version outside of Germany.
Big Island Dining - Not so hot
Too bad you opted out of the Roy's in Poipu. We had an excellent dinner there last Spring. Noise was not unreasonable, although they were fully booked.
Handmade Tamales (SD)
Another vote for a tamale cart on University and 38th? It's close to the Pupusaria place in front of the liquor store on the North side of the street. Open at 7AM usually. I work in the neighborhood and stop by for breakfast or save it for sack lunch. Rajas and Pork are my favorites at $1.25 each.
San Diego Worst Meals of 2006
Funny, as I was reading this thread, I immediately thought of Island Prime! Only went once. When you pay $30 bucks for an a la carte steak, the crab garnish shouldn't by so old and stinky you are afraid to eat it! I was shocked and disappointed. Cohn Group usually gets it right. That crab was unforgiveable!
San Diego Worst Meals of 2006
Sorry to hear you've been disappointed. I've been there about 6 times, since they opened. Been pleased with each dish I've tasted, including the calamari appetizer. I guess any place can have a bad night.
Good bread in San Diego
I, too, love Bread and Cie. I do not, however, buy it from Ralph's etc. If I can't get to Hillcrest, I buy fresh from my local Von's. Recently I've been buying their "Artisan" black olive loaf. I like their bakery better than any other supermarket, perhaps because their whipped cream toppings are really cream, unlike Ralph's etc.
What's On Your Rotation? (San Diego)
Does anyone know what happened to the Mungers? They opened a place in Uptown called Cane's when the complex first opened, but it wasn't the same and didn't survive the high rent.
What's On Your Rotation? (San Diego)
That Piret's Cookbook is a treasure for sure. I love their French Onion soup and Chicken Salad recipes. One surviving element is the coffee they used--Pannikin's.
Has anyone found a charcuterie style place in the County?

Hurray for remembering Tony's Jacal--the best guacamole and turkey tacos! An institution.
Savory is a joy. We haven't had anything close to it, since Piret's left the Lumberyard in Encinitas (I guess I'm dating myself).

Gotta second Caffe Forte. They roast their own. I love strong coffee and it is!
Parkhouse Eatery is one of our favorites, especially now that they are on the Restaurant.com discount program. It's the appetizers that got us, especially their house made pate.
The Linkery--we don't "get it". We live a couple of blocks away and would love to love it. Everytime we've had their sausages, they were dry and boring. The other food was good. Just a couple of doors down, we enjoy Zensei Sushi
What's On Your Rotation? (San Diego)
Tapas Picasso has a couple of dishes that I'd rank extremely high, others not so impressiive. If you love garlic, this is a winning meal--salad with cilantro dressing with fried calamari and the garlic lamb!

Give Heavenly Desserts a try in North Park, 30th and University. We've been very happy.
