your best swordfish recipe?

Since the marinate is not cooking, the bay leaves impart a very subtle flavor. Mostly the parsely and tarragon. But if you've most likelt had tarragon in a special tune salad, or on eggs with chives or on a chicken dish. The flavor is subtle, just don't marinate for too long. Tarragon is a family (plant of anise) and therefore licorice tasking.

Come cook for me! Anyway, you might try Panda Inn at the top of the Horton Plaza, or if you are in the Del Mar area, China City. There are dozes of good asain food place in the industrial area of Kearny Mesa. If you say where you are staying near I can recommend one nearby.

Best Burgers and Fresh Fries in San Diego?

Charleys after all these years is still serving up great cheeseburgers. When I'm around Spring Valley or Lemon Grove, I go grab a table and have a Charlies double with a shake.

Clean fish. Add tbsp of sugar, tbsp of salt, and tbsp of black pepper. Cut up a 1/2 cup of parsely and another full cup of tarragon. Mix all the ingredients in a flat (glass baking)container with 3/4 cup of water and 3/4 cup of canola oil. Add a couple of bay leaves. Add 3 tbsp of Worchtershire (sp) sauce and mix very well. Add some lime juice (very few drops). Mix in everything and stir. Then ad the steaks and cover in refrig for a few hours. (3 to 4 is good, turn over once) then remove and let reach room temp. will you get the gas or coal grill going. Grill each steak about 3 to 4 minutes on each side (for 1 to 11/4 size cuts) Remove, ganish with cut limes or lemons, parsely and capers. This meal goes very well with boiled small red potatos or parsely potatoes... rice as well. Steamed veggies a must.. Enjoy.....

San Diego burrito question

Getting tired of the "Mission Style Burrito" eh? OK, go to any Roberto's Taco Shop and get a Carne Asada Burrito. It's just beef and some cilantro and guac. It's great at any location. Also, for a good carnitas burrito try Porkyland in La Jolla or the Barrio Logan area of San Diego. El Asadero on El Cajon Blvd., Cotija's Taco shops (many locations). Las Quatro Milpas, also in Barrio Logan. But you'll be able to find a Roberto's about anywhere with a good price and get a sample of what San Diego Mexican fast food is like. This is one of the Roberto's sites... (but there are more.. just look for the obvious red and yellow striped buildings) http://www.robertos.us/

Phils BBQ San Diego - When will it reopen?

OK, I have lived in San Diego for 35 years. I also love BBQ. I have tried almost every place that has come and gone. And they come and go. But one that has been around for a long time (but several have closed) is the BBQ Pit. They used to be in Kearny Mesa (Balboa), San Marcos, Pacific Beach and North Park. Those have closed (except North Park may still cater). The remang one in Fletcher Hills and National City (50 years in business) are a great BBQ in MHO. Their meat is smoked and cut right in front of you. Good beef, pork and ham. The chicken and hot links are OK. Their beans are good and the rest is french fries, macaroni and potato salad. Old fashioned, not fancy, good prices. There is still a Love's BBQ on E Street in Chula Vista (off I-805). I still enjoy their pork ribs and beef short ribs from time to time. They are the only one left out of 5 in San Diego. I'll turn you on to a great (but unseemingly unusual) place for pork ribs. They made at an Italian restaurant called Lido's on Broadway in Lemon Grove. The place is known for pizza and pasta, but they have been making some damn good ribs for 50 years. I know people (including myself) that drive 45 minutes to eat there. It's always packed...but they have a great take out business too.

Encinitas -- Herschel's Deli

Strange. I went there too and it was just a few days after eating there and there was no one inside, but still pies in the pie case. That happened years ago to a downtown eatery that was popular with the power elite, but the name slips my mind. Anyway, the guy just vanished and all these employees showed up and the place was locked up... customers came too. He's now a security guard downtown. Now I remember.. it was called Leubachs (sp... I think I spelled it wrong)... prounounced lou-boks

Best Burgers and Fresh Fries in San Diego?

I like Hodad's burgers.. but I went recently and something was missing. There was a long line out the door, must have been holiday tourists. One of the things they do is use fresh ingredients, and generous amounts on the burgers. But this time there was no lettuce.. They were "out"... so unpredictable is right.

Rao's maranara sauce @ $10 - What gives?

Could it be the "plecebo effect?" Or "psychosymatic" that if you're willing to pay $10.00, it's worth 10?

The Starbucks effect... can't sell enough coffee at 50 cents a cup? Mark it up to $4.00 and everyboy will want it! (overoasted, overpriced mud)

Rao's maranara sauce @ $10 - What gives?

Shopping at Vons (Safeway) today I came across these jars of Rao's sauces (Maranara, and other Italian styles) and they were $9.89 a jar! The same size at the store brand for $1.00 Can you CHowhounds please explain why that brand is so expensive? Is it laced with gold?

San Diego

If your hotel is in Little Italy, you'll find plenty of great food within walking distance. There's Louisiana Food Shoppe with great Southern food, creole, fish dishes and po' boy sandwiches..typical NOLA food. There's Chinese at China Camp, Po Pazzo's for steaks, Sushi Fix for sushi, and some of the best dessert, bistro's/cafes and coffee places in San Diego are clustered in a 4 block radius of Little Italy. Enjoy!

Oceanside dining suggestions?

Thank you for the extensive post! I'm familiar with a few of those places but didn't know they have locations up here, so that great news. Where I am is near the beach about a block from the 101 Cafe on Coast so there are many Angelos's and other fast foods, but not many wholesome food places. Thank you again for the tips!

Dirty looks while eating out with kids...

They don't need to be exposed to a "different scenario" to learn... I would gamble that the kids with bad behavior at restaurants also have bad behavior at home and those with good behavior at home behave well in restaurants. Taking a brat out of the house to a restaurant will not temper their poorly (developed) behavior. When they can behave well at home they are probably ready for "the restaurant experience." But this isn't really about bad kids (is it folks?) , it's about lousy parents.

Dirty looks while eating out with kids...

The problem with parents these days is they "try to be best friends" with their children, rather than parent them. They think of them as little adults as opposed to adults in training. They feel they are entitiled to all the things "big people" are entitled too. And when their behavior is not good they fall back on "they're just kids!"

Oceanside dining suggestions?

I'm open to suggestions for decent places to eat in Oceanside. I'm familiar with most of San Diego having been raised here, and I just moved here from six years in Del Mar..so I know many of the "North County" places...but this is really "North"... Oceanside is closer to restaurants in Orange County than Greater San Diego. Anyway, just wondering about local favorites. Thanks.
