Cooking a potato kugel in cholent -- need help ASAP
you might want to try making a potato kugel chulent (sometimes known as "yaptzuk")
to make this all you need to do is prepare the mixture for a large potato kugel, pour it into a crock pot, add meat, kishka and about 1 cup of water.
let it sit until shabbos morning and enjoy
Cooking a potato kugel in cholent -- need help ASAP
it goes into the chulent after it has already been cooked
Anyone try Bistro Grill's 5 Town's $8 specials?
Marty, im soooo upset. for over a year now ive been reading your posts and everytime i read them i crack up and say "i've got to meet this guy"
while the above post may not be funny, it pisses me off because.......i was there at 6:15pm
i also got the steak sandwich special. with tax it came to $8.70 and it was outrageous. the creamy pesto sauce that they add to the sandwich gave an amazing flavor to it, and it wasnt overstuffed, which means it didnt fall apart (good thing cuz i ate it while driving home)
i highly recommend the $8 specials, and i will definitely be going back, which pisses me off even more because i HATE the owner.
HUGE Brisket Problem!
Aspartame's ( the artificial sweetener in diet soda) components separate when heated over time, resulting in a loss of sweetness. Therefore, aspartame is not recommended for use in recipes requiring lengthy heating or baking. It may, however, be added at the end of the cooking cycle in some recipes. If a food containing aspartame is inadvertently heated, it would still be safe, but would simply not provide the desired sweetness.
Rendered Chicken Fat
you should cut the fat and skins into smal pieces. i find this to be much easier with kitchen shears, rather than a knife.
tit doesnt take long at all. it depends on the amount you are doing, but its not a 3 hours long process. think of it more along the lines of "frying up chicken skins and fat" rather than "rendering"
the schmaltz is just a by-product of frying it up
Searching for the best Chinese cuisine in New Jersey
FYI, there is some sort of connection between the Manalapan, Fairlawn and Elizabeth Chinese places. they were all opened up by the same people.
i remember when new kosher special opened up (about 15 years ago) they were also supposed to be new kosher express (they even put the sign up for a few days) however the burger place, now known as Glatt Star, had just changed its name TO Kosher Express a few weeks earlier.
carlos and gabbys opening in Elizabeth NJ
FYI, when i was in JEC for high school, lunch period was from 12:45-1:20pm. the extra walking will really cut into that time.

Kosher Brisket Question ("Soaked and Salted")
$18 is insane. i have seen it averaging between $10-$14 at most places in the 5 towns
Kosher Brisket Question ("Soaked and Salted")
room temperature is better. and yes, you can marinade afterwards
Kosher Brisket Question ("Soaked and Salted")
my mother did it a few times, the house stunk for hours
Kosher Brisket Question ("Soaked and Salted")
i think liver is the only thing that is sold "not kashered" but even that is still soaked and salted.
the only thing that it still needs is the broiling process, which only applies to liver.
Kosher Brisket Question ("Soaked and Salted")
i have worked in the food business for many years and what AZNA says about skirt steak is correct.
only very thin pieces of meat will really give off a salty taste, however there is a way to get rid of it.
soak the skirt steaks in water for 1-2 hours, change the water every 30 minutes. a lot of people soak them in water but what they dont realize is that unless they change the water, they are just soaking them in salty water
Kosher Brisket Question ("Soaked and Salted")
where do you shop that you can get a non kashered piece of meat from a kosher butcher?
Travel meal taste test in progress: Are any of the La Briute meals actually good?
IMHO the La Briute meals dont even compare to the meal mart meals. i have had a bunch of the meal mart meals:
chulent - very good, and i am not the type of person to eat leftover chulent (WARNING!!! it is extremely gassy)
stuffed cabbage - perfect, exactly what you would expect
rib steak - its no rib steak, but it is very tasty
pepper steak- the rice doesnt reheat well
Condiment recommendation for Gefilte Fish
gefilte fish IS NOT fish. it is a fish product. it has a completely diferent taste and texture. you cannot compare a slice of gefilte fish, to a piece of chilean sea bass. im not talking about what is better, im saying that they have so little in common.
Condiment recommendation for Gefilte Fish
the best condiment on Gefilte Fish is a mixture of:
60% chrain (the triple strong variety is best)
20% Woebers or A&H horseradish sauce
20% Woebers or A&H stone ground MUSTARD
their mustard is very unique and it also contains horseradish. every time i do this at my shabbos table, my guests look at me like i am nuts!!!! yet every time they try it they are AMAZED at how nicely it works with the fish.
i dont usually measure it out, i usually just put the chrain on, then a little squeeze of the other 2 and mix it on top.
A MUST TRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Miami Restaurants- my thoughts
i agree with you, except for the fact that i complained about everything to the the manager. now he knows to watche out for more problems with her.
Miami Restaurants- my thoughts
i went to 17 on Saturday night. we got there at 12:00am, and it closes at 1am. we were the only ones there except for 1 other table of 3 people.
we ordered 1 salad, 1 soup, and 5 rolls of sushi. it took 30 minutes until we were served!!!!!!!!!!!!!
on top of that, they rushed us through our meal!!!!
on top of that, the waitress gave us the wrong sushi and we had to figure out what each one was so that we could sort out whose was whose!!!!!!!
on top of that, they gave us the bill with a 18% tip included. normally this wouldn't bother me except for 2 things, the service was terrible and nowhere on the menu did it say that it was going to be added in. so i went to the manager and told him my feelings, and he said that i did say it on the menu, and then he couldn't find it. it turns out that they gave us the to-go menu, but that's not my problem. then i complained about the service and the waitress showed up and got really pissy with me.
in the end they took the tip off the bill, and i paid the check, and i was happy that i got my point across, however i did leave 18% on the table to avoid a "chilul hashem" because i was wearing a yarmulke, and the waitress was obviously a non frum Israeli.
Price matching at Glatt Kosher Kingdom
i was there tonight, i couldnt find that ad anywhere, and noone at the store knew about it. i went with the ads from all the local stores. i left very disappointed :(
Glatt kosher kingdom no longer open 24/6

Fusion Toast Bar in Cedarhurst
i was there on opening night. i work across the street, and i have been waiting for it to finally open. it is a beautiful place, and good food. but it is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE!!!!! and the portions are not nearly enough. the weird thing was, was that i was the only one there. they didnt have any huge grand opening, no ads in the newspapers, no special deals, just a sigh in the window.
i hope they become succeful, but i just dont see it happening
Meat prices
they sell some meat that they buy from the star-K, and they also have their own shechita plant in NJ.
this is quoted directly from their mashgiach
Carvel and mrs. fields at short hills mall
i was there today, and noticed it. the letter of certification is dated 1/18/09. im surprised that no one mentioned anything sooner. the Mrs. fields in the mall in St louis has been under hashgacha for awhile.
i had a chocolate chip macadamia cookie, and they are nothing like the prepackaged items.
REALLY GOOD!!!!
