Coterie Room or Quinn's Early Sunday Dinner

Geez, that will not work with trying to get a flight....might just stick with Coterie unless you all have other suggestions for 4 PM dinner.

Coterie Room or Quinn's Early Sunday Dinner

You've got me intrigued about Walrus again, I love seafood, just not an oyster fan. I'd love to have some foie too as it will be banned in California (supposedly) in a few months. Thanks!

Might just cancel my reservation at Coterie. Will there be a wait on a Sunday for Walrus right when they open at 4 pm?

Coterie Room or Quinn's Early Sunday Dinner

Need a dinner place that's open by 4 so we can return the rental car and get on our 7:40 flight. I've made reservations at Coterie, but will Quinn's be a better choice? There's a lot of gastropub/comfort food where I'm from so wherever is unique and delicious.

I considered Walrus and Carpenter but oysters are just not my favorite thing...

strange soup at vietmanese restaurants

I agree, hot is not my thing, cold is more refreshing :)

My mom used the make it, throw it in the fridge overnight then I'd eat it cold...

strange soup at vietmanese restaurants

I think that's a kind of kelp...

strange soup at vietmanese restaurants

Think of it more like a dessert than soup, it's made with mung beans. I also like the red bean variety, but I grew up with it, it's called che dau xanh. A lot of authentic places will give you some at the end of the meal. I have an Indian friend who loves all sorts of food especially Vietnamese but she doesn't just "get" desserts with beans.....haha. Big asian thing to incorporate beans for dessert and make them sweet.

Paleo friendly restaurants?

I've been doing Paleo for the last few months about 70%-80% of the time. Basically it's very doable in many restaurants since a lot of people do low carb in So Cal anyway. A few of my fave Paleo friendly places (I'm in OC):

- California Fish Grill: crab salad and ahi poke
- Chipotle: salad with meat, fajita veggies, guac, and salsa
- Korean BBQ: Cham Sut Gol, Incheonwon
- Peruvian: Sub rice for salad
- Shabu: California Shabu, Shabu Shabu Bar
- Kean Coffee: Almond milk is an option
- El Toro Bravo: carne asada and roast chicken
- Thai Nakorn: thai bbq chicken, crying tiger, roasted fish, coconut chicken soup
- Japanese BBQ: Tsruhashi
- Vietnamese: 7 courses of beef, just lettuce wrap the meat - Anh Hong or Thien Anh
- Lebanese: Kebabs, schwarma, and baarg plates, sub salad for rice

Obviously home cooking is the only way to completely control, but I give myself a break for sauces with sugar or small amounts of the off limits stuff that may be in the food.....hey, I'm cutting out huge portions of carbs, dairy, and legumes!

Paleo Nom Nom is a great blog for recipes and Daiya cheese found at Sprout Markets is pretty close to Paleo cheese (a bit of pea powder in it). You can also mimic fried rice using cauliflower through the food processor. Good luck!

Thoughts on Seattle Itinerary - LA/OC hound

Yes, we will have a car!

Thoughts on Seattle Itinerary - LA/OC hound

Hello, coming to Seattle for 1.5 days in May before driving to Vancouver. We'll be in Seattle Thursday and 1/2 day Friday then driving up.

Thursday:
Breakfast: Bakery Nouveau for double baked croissants (the bf looves chocolate croissants)
Lunch: Pike Place Chowder
Dinner: Either Six Seven, Ray's Boathouse, or Elliott's. Looking for well cooked, fresh wild salmon and king crab. Thoughts or other suggestions?

Friday: Breakfast or brunch somewhere before driving to Vancouver. BF can do diner food but I'd like something with more options and interesting food aka hipster (Sadly local 360 only does brunch on weekends). Thinking about....
Lola
Skillet Diner - menu looks awfully good

Additionally we'll be driving back to Seattle Sunday afternoonish to catch our evening flight. Any ideas for happy hour or early dinner would be helpful, we missing anything?

Jonathan Gold to L.A. Times - again!

Well, good luck reading his articles, LA Times will start charging.....

Maybe that's where his salary is coming from.

Vietnamese grilled beef with betel leaves

Been to that one, Bolsa and Bushard in the same plaza as some vegetarian place. Pretty good, but I haven't been to the other location.

Barolo Cafe in Tustin

Gen is pretty darn good quality and yes it's AYCE, $19.99 dinner and weekend lunches. $15 for weekday lunch. There's at least 12-15 different beef options for dinner. Wait can be horridly long especially now they're remodeling. I came right at opening for Sunday lunch and got seated in 20 minutes, first seating.

Kean is the tastiest and strongest coffee I've had in OC. I'm no expert, but it's good to me!

Yep, I'll throw in Anh Hong in Garden Grove too. My aunt would get a couple orders to go all the time at 7 courses of beef places. Also at Banh Mi So 1 they sell them as an item on their ready made food to go hot area, I want to say 5-6 rolls on a skewer....

Recommendations for Orange County Restaurant Week 2011 ?

I will probably do TAPS, solid food and their Restaurant Week menu isn't a rehash of their usual stuff, looks very interesting...

Dine LA Jan/Feb 2012 Reviews

Another Craft report.

Appetizers
- Shrimp: Eh ok, just some poached smallish shrimp with a sweet sauce on top of some fennel
- Winter greens salad: Hearty greens, standard toppings of gorgonzola and walnuts and balsamic dressing.
- Chicken liver mousee: Very creamy and rich, hard boiled diced egg on top and crispy shallots. My first memory of chicken liver is in banh mi so the flavor was very similar but this was much creamier.

Entrees (there were actually 6 instead of the 5 online - add bacon wrapped pork loin)
- Salmon (instead of trout): Huge, thick portion of perfectly cooked salmon (med-rare), at least 6-8 oz portion. The skin was shatteringly crisped, like a paper thin skin cracker. Nice lemony sauce on top of the fingerllng potatoes below.
-Duck confit: Very crisp skin and meat very rich, we got a whole leg quarter between the 2 of us.
- Roasted veggies: Nice little assortment of roasted baby carrots, brussel sprouts, and fingerling potatoes.
- Additional side of gnocchi: Wow, very light and fluffy, perfectly delicate seasoning. Literally tasted like mashed potato orbs barely held together.

Dessert
- Chocolate ganache bars with coconut: Nice and rich semi-sweet chocolate with fresh coconut shavings. There was a tiny bit of salt on top which was subtle.
- Banana and vanilla bean ice cream: Banana was just like eating a fresh ripe banana, vanilla was nice and creamy.

Overall, the appetizers were just ok, loved the entrees. A little sad about just the 1 dessert option, I love lemon desserts. The service was fantastic, although there were misteps here and there, they acknowledged and took care of it (free drink and brussel sprout leaves for 30 minute reservation wait and free gnocchi when it didn't come out with our entrees). Overall, very nice but am I going to run back for the food soon? Maybe, that ribeye for the table some people had looked fantastic!

Agreed, went last year to Spago for Dine LA, dinky portions with the extra angnolotti and still hungry......

Dine LA Jan/Feb 2012 Reviews

Did you go with just 2 peopls? Some have said the portions a little small. Do you think we should order a side and if so, any recommendations?

Dine LA Jan/Feb 2012 Reviews

Any reviews yet? I'm going to Craft this Saturday (extending specials to the 2 Saturdays)!

It's DineLA Time Again: 1/22-27/12; 1/29-2/3/12

Oh wow, you get all the apps and desserts no matter what, I'm in! Reservation done and for a Saturday too. Can't wait, everything sounds delicious and nice to hear about the portions too.

I think it was Lukshon I was reading awhile back where they had 3-4 entree choices and a group of 2 only got one entree choice, a group of 3 got 2 entree choices and so. So you had to have at least 1 more person than entree choices to get everything family style.....lame.

It's DineLA Time Again: 1/22-27/12; 1/29-2/3/12

No, if a couple dines, if you each can order a different app, main, and dessert. I thought with Craft and some other DineLA places it was family style and you had to have like 4-5 people to receive all the different dining options? Or maybe I'm just totally imagining reading that...

It's DineLA Time Again: 1/22-27/12; 1/29-2/3/12

Menu for Craft looks great, isn't it family style though? Can a couple come in and order 2 apps, entrees, and dessert?

Staub sale at SLT

SLT right now is selling Fumee (very nice shimmery grey) and La Mer (jewel toned turquoise) for an additional 30% off. Got a gorgeous 2.5 qt in the Fumee for $69.99. Not on the website, but in the 2 stores I visited until they run out.....

Chocolate Almond Croissant

Thanks, new place to try! No good places in OC, eh?

Looking for group cooking classes

My friends and I did Hipcooks for a birthday party earlier this year. All equipment provided. We didn't have individual "stations" cooking the same thing, more like a bunch of cutting boards and various people helped chop, prep, mix while the instructor taught some techniques and did the main cooking in one batch in the front. At the end, we ate all the food together. They allow for public group and private classes, I think you can do those with a max of 12 people or so. I recall they included 2 glasses of wine with our package, don't see why they wouldn't allow you to bring more.

Savory donuts (other than the bacon maple donut at Nickel Diner)?

Doesn't qualify as "donut" since they're not fried, but Fonuts has bacon maple and chroizo cheddar flavors. Obviously since they weren't fried, the bacon maple I tried tasted more cake-ish.

Pina's Bistro in Tustin

I recently went to Gen Korean BBQ on Main and Newport in the Kean Coffee plaza. Very good quality for the price, $20 AYCE. There's 10+ types of choices for beef, 20 or so including pork, chicken, shrimp and veggies. Crazy waits, but the best quality beef for AYCE. My fave new joint in OC for sure!

Reasonable places for dinner in Costa Mesa near Performing Arts Center

How about Shabu? California Shabu right off Baker in Costa Mesa. Mitsuwa food court is a good suggestion if you don't mind it's a food court - Santouka Ramen.

Chocolate Almond Croissant

I know, so sad :(

Dine LA Restaurants

I went to Spago for DineLA last year, although delicious, and with an extra side of agnolotti ($13-$15), I was still hungry. Maybe I should've gone for another couple pieces of bread and the dessert was just ok, some type of apple and pastry dessert.

On another note, tried to go to Next Little Door for lunch since it looked like a steal, $16 for 3 courses (moules frites as entree option is already $20 a la carte). Got there only to find out it started today, for dinner...fail. Can they even do that even though the website says clearly Oct 2 is the start date?

The March Of The Dumplings

I like One Plus One, juicy pan fried dumplings! I believe their new location in Chino Hills is their only one now.
