I've wanted a food processor forever...
Among the other things listed, I use my food processor to make homemade butter. Delicious...
Brix chocolates
Yes, I got mine at Cost Plus. I have also seen a few sites on line that carry
Brix chocolates
Has anyone tried Brix chocolates yet? They are bars of chocolate (milk chocolate, dark chocolate and extra dark chocolate) designed to complement wine. I bought some tonight, but unfortunately, am on call for work and so unable to have wine for the next few nights. I am curious to hear opinions of others who have tried.
As a tourist, do you plan your trips around food?
I've got to admit- my trips are frequently based around food. A trip last year was centered around a 1 week cooking class in Provence. I also once finagled a 2 year assigment in Japan because I wanted endless access to fresh good quality sushi and shabu shabu!!! My sister in law says that I am the only person that she knows that literally lands in a new town and then heads straight for the local food markets.....
What's your favorite vegetarian sandwich?
1) Homemade hummus that has been left a bit chunky, smoothed on multigrain bread with bean sprouts, thin slices of red onion, smashed avocado and a sprinkle of coarse salt.
2) Grilled cheddar and sliced green apples on multigrain.
3) And lastly, what can beat thick slices of fresh picked vine ripened tomatoes on fresh baked bread with a smear of Mayo and sprinkle of salt and pepper!!
Yum yum
Specialty McDonalds???[moved from General Chowhounding board]
The teriyaki burger served at Japanese McD was pretty tasty.
Cooking Smells
I agree. Though I don't actually put the vinegar bottles out,... I pour the vinegar into pretty containers
Cooking Smells
Tehama- I am on a korean food kick as of late and have found that one of the most effective means to rid my house of the smell is placing several small open containers of white vinegar around the house. Works like a charm!
Homemade butter in a Vita-mixer
I just tried making butter in my Vita mixer and got an awful mess; I couldn't get any water to seperate out from the butter. I usually have such fantastic results when I make butter, so I figured maybe something was wrong with my heavy cream. Just to be certain, I dumped the whole mess into my regular food processor (which I usually use for making butter) and processed- resulted in the great butter that I am accustomed to!
Has anyone else similar results with the Vita- mixer?
Has anyone eaten strawberries w/ pasta?
Food perv- I'd love the reecipe for your dessert spaghetti!
Jones Soda Halloween edition 2007 - candy corn, strawberry s'lime?
I'm not a soda fan, but always seem to cave around Halloween when Jones's sodas come out. They are perfect for parties. Good thing that it's only once a year because they are packed with calories (about 140) per very small can!
I just bought the sour lemon and gruesome grape- The sour lemon was great, the gruesome grape way too sweet.
I really liked the Apple Cider Soda last year and was disappointed to see that that they didn't bring that back. I also tried the candy corn last year (with HFCS)- didn't care for it at all as I thought it tasted nothing like candy corn. Maybe this year's version with Cane will be better?
Ideas for lots of rosemary
I love this recipe for rosemary cookies- easy to make and delicious:
Ingredients
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 3/4 cup flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 scant teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary
Instructions
Blend together the butter, shortening, sugar and eggs until creamy.
Sift flour into the mixture then add the other dry ingredients; the cream of tartar, soda and salt, and blend together.
Next add the most important ingredient at least when it comes to flavor, 2 scant teaspoons of fresh chopped rosemary.
Form the dough into small balls and place them on an un-greased baking sheet. Press the balls flat with the bottom of a drinking glass that has been dipped in sugar. This gives them a nice crunchy glaze.
Bake them in a pre-heated 400 degree oven for only about 8 minutes.
Question about buttermilk from homemade butter
I just made butter a few hours ago. Instead of the kneading by hand that so many recipes recommend- i put butter in a bowel and used a pastry blender. I got great results and had minimal mess.
Ice cream makers? advice needed
If you already have a Kitchen aid mixer, I'd recommend the ice cream maker attachment. I've gone both ways (actual ice cream machine vs the KA mixer) and have got to say I prefer the attachment
Do your Food magazines arrive late?
Yes! I have noticed this for years. I finally just let all my subscriptions expire. The frustration just wasn't worth.. I couldn't stand seeing an article that I really wanted to read on the newstand but then having to wait to actually read it.
What do Chowhounds do for a living (besides eat of course)?
O.K, I'll bite. My husb and I are both medical docs. However, I've gotta admit that I started being a CH when I was poor and in medical school, barely making the rent
Saratoga Springs grocers
My fam and I are relocating to Saratoga Springs in a few weeks and I can't wait! Can anyone suggest places to get asian ingredients? What about gourmet ingredients (ala a Dean and Deluca or Whole Foods)? Putnam Market has mentioned- any strong opinions either way? For variety, any markets in nearby towns that I should check out?
ideas for natural green food coloring
I'm making mint ice cream this weekend. Since it's St Paddy's Day and kids will be attending- ice cream needs to be green. I really hate the idea of adding artifical food coloring. I'm afraid that spinach water might result in altered taste. Any ideas for ways to color ice cream? Should I try avocado? If so how much? This is the recipe I will be using:
Mint Chip Ice Cream
Yield: 1 quart
1 1/2 cups of fresh mint leaves, preferably peppermint
1 1/2 cups milk
1 1/2 cups heavy cream (non-ultra-pasteurized)
2/3 cup sugar, divided
4 egg yolks
1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
8 ounces semisweet chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate (stored in freezer until use)
1 teaspoon vanilla
Put the mint leaves in a heavy saucepan with the milk. Bring to a bare simmer, remove from heat, cover, and let stand for 30 minutes. Strain the milk into a bowl and reserve. Clean the saucepan.
Combine the heavy cream, 1/3 cup of the sugar and salt in the clean saucepan and bring to a bare simmer. Whisk the yolks with the remaining 1/3 cup of sugar in a large bowl. When the cream is hot, very gradually pour it into the yolks and sugar, whisking vigorously at the same time so the yolks don't curdle.
When all the cream has been added, return the whole mixture to the saucepan. Heat slowly just to 170 degrees (or when it coats the back of a wooden spoon). Pour into a large metal bowl and add the reserved, mint-flavored milk.
Cool over an ice bath and allow to chill in the refrigerator for 3 or 4 hours.
Churn in an ice cream machine according to instructions. As the churning finishes, add the cold chocolate chips. Freeze 4 hours or overnight.
Beer and Cheese Soup - topped with cheese popcorn - ANYONE HEARD OF THIS? A recipe?
Try Googleing "beer, cheese, soup, popcorn, recipe". Lots of different recipes show up.
Kolache in San Diego
Does anyone know where I can get fresh Kolache in San Diego?
I just got back from Texas, where there were Kolache bakeries galore. I have never tried and was eager to partake, but ran out of time and had to get back to SD. Now, I could kick myself for not
making the time.. for some reason, I now am obsessed with sampling.
I am looking for both the sweet and the savory versions.
I have seen some places like the Kolache Factory that ship, online, but would prefer not to have to go that route.
Trying to drink more water--how to make it more interesting?
I take a few slices of orange and a vanilla bean and add to a about gallon of water. Put in the fridge for a day or so. Alter time/ amount of orange and vanilla to your taste- it's fantastic.
Favorite Seinfeld food moments
"I got news for you. I show up with Ring Dings and Pepsi, I become the biggest hit at the party. People be coming up to me, "just between you and me I'm really excited about the Ring Dings and the Pepsi. Europeans with the Beaujolais and Chardonnay . . ."- George Costanza- "The Dinner Party"
I want to try Truffles but I don't know where
I'm not sure if TJs carries. I get my truffle oil at Oliver's and
Co. I love white truffle oil drizzled over pasta with fresh gratted parmesian- as a matter of fact- I had for dinner tonight!
