Yummy places near Somerset, Princeton, New Brunswick?

These are fantastic recommendations, folks! Thank you!! I live in DC so pretty much can't trip on my shoelaces without falling headfirst into a plate of Injera, so we probably won't do Ethiopian, but I *love* the idea of hitting the dosa strip and a bunch of these places look great!

I have no idea what the 'grease trucks' are but now that I know there are such things I am absolutely determined to find out.

Yummy places near Somerset, Princeton, New Brunswick?

Hi - I will be in Somerset this weekend and need eating plans. All I care about is deliciousness - I will go anywhere, from some sketchy truck on a back lot all the way up to something pretty upscale. I love all kinds of food as long as they are delicious and I am traveling with another adult omnivore, so there are no restrictions on ethnicity or atmosphere. Please help! I'm trapped at a boring hotel where the food will surely not be worth the calories or time it would take to eat it, and I need food to look forward to! Thanks in advance!

Tampa Recommendations

Sorry you had a so-so experience at Thai Noodle - they are mixed. I think their straight noodle dishes are excellent - the curries and other stuff are nothing special.

Tampa Recommendations

Antojitos is lots of fun and tasty. I also like Queen of Sheba, Ceviche, Ichiban, and Trang, so you have lots of good stuff on this list. Some of these I have not been to, but I would say that while La Teresita is tasty and fun, if you are in that neighborhood both Arco Iris and West Tampa Sandwich Shop have better local Tampa--Cuban-Spanish food.

Enjoy!

Tampa Recommendations

No offense to khdeals but I don't like any of the places on that first list at all. I think Mel's is a total scam. They are just regular hot dogs on regular steamed hot dog buns with regular toppings, gussied up with a retro atmosphere and expensive.

My personal edits to Andy's list above:

I refer Tara's Roti Shop to Jerk Hut for Jamaican (and I think Jerk Hut just closed down anyhow). I'd add Ho Ho Choy to the list - it's in the same strip mall as Chopstix and has decent dim sum. And there is a place that no one but me ever seems to notice which is just called 'thai noodles' or something bland like that, up on Fletcher just a bit east of campus. Their noodle dishes are really good. I'm surprised no one ever talks about it here actually.

But as others have said: The USF campus area is not an easy place to eat well without a car. Good luck to you!

emergency foodie excursion tomorrow from Tampa/St Pete?

My boring friends wimped out on me and we went for lunch locally, even though I *loved* the Lunch on Limoges idea. I need to try that really soon.

Tarpon Springs is always fun but I was in the mood for something new.

Thanks for the suggestions people! I didn't get to use them for my 'emergency' but clearly I have some excursions in my future...

emergency foodie excursion tomorrow from Tampa/St Pete?

Hmm - this is just the kind of idea I like but google maps lists it as a 3 hr drive each way ... more than we will manage... but I need to do that some day soon so thanks for the tip!

emergency foodie excursion tomorrow from Tampa/St Pete?

OK, so 3 of my friends and I were supposed to go boating on Monday, and it rained. So we rescheduled for tomorrow - and it will rain. We need to have a fun day tomorrow - we can't have our hopes of fun deflated twice in a row! But what can one do in the rain in the middle of a weekday around here? Once you've gotten yourself in the mood for a day out on a boat with a six pack, a wake board, and some tunes, another round of the Dali museum really doesn't hit the spot.

I'm thinking a serious food excursion would be fun. Can any of you think of a place that would be a reasonable drive from Tampa/St Pete that would be a food adventure? It could either be a really great splurge restaurant, or - even better - some strange local fabulous place that would feel like an adventure. But just going out for yet another local lunch somewhere decent in St Pete or Tampa is not going to make up for two days of lost boating, so I need ideas! Creative ideas are welcome.

Thanks for any help!

Big John's Alabama BBQ (Tampa)

Thanks! I will definitely try it ... and report back on whether it does anything to alleviate my mourning over the loss of Big John's.

What Am I Missing in Downtown St. Pete?

I ate once at Zgrille and loved it. Have eaten several times at The Table with very mixed results ... BUT the little cheesy, yuca-based bread balls they serve to start the meal at The Table are worth the trip all on their own. They are little balls of lovable goodness - seriously, I can't even think about them without craving them.

restaurant duds in Tampa

I have recently, and with great sadness, given up once and for all on Mi Mexico, of which I used to be a huge fan. I guess they changed owners. The new rojo sauce tastes like Vietnamese chili sauce from a plastic bottle. The meat on the tacos is dry and usually luke-warm. The chips are often inedibley tough and greasy. The salsa is hot (?) and the texture of soup. What a come down for what used to be a friggin' awesome, authentic taco joint in the 'hood. Thank the flying spaghetti monster for Acapulco Grocery.

Big John's Alabama BBQ (Tampa)

I had just the same experience a couple of weeks ago and was devastated! What's the deal? I was taking a friend there who had never been there and was so proud to show it off... What a crushing disappointment!

Hey CFishman, where is Sooo Good on Hillsborough? Is it a classic Q joint?

Trip to St. Petersburg

I ate at Z Grille for the first time this week and thought it was a great addition to the area... Those were the best fresh oysters I have had in the area. They bring you a sampler of different oysters from different areas, all very fresh and tasty. Oh, and the deviled eggs made me very happy. It's a surprisingly inept wine list for an 'upscale' place though.

Best tacos in Tampa and Pinellas?

Thanks! I have to start posting and reading regularly again ... I have missed it! While we are on the topic, has anyone other than me noticed that Mi Mexico seems to have changed chefs or plan or something and is not as good as it used to be? :-(

Best tacos in Tampa and Pinellas?

I have been away from the board for quite a while....

I am a huge fan of the tacos served at the back of Acapulco Grocery at MacDill and Cyprus. Each time I go I am more sure they are the best in town!

NY Chowhound to Tampa for 20th anniversary

I've been pleasantly surprised by Mise en Place both times I have gone. I don't find it stuffy - just nice. I haven't been to Cafe Ponte yet but really want to go - if I were planning a blowout anniversary meal in town right now, that's what I would pick.

Best Caribbean Food in Florida?

Sorry to bump an old post but in case people are interested, Tara's Roti Shop is open - I just ate there on Friday. It was yummy - my favorite proper Jamaican Roti in Tampa so far. I have never been there before so I don't know if this is a reopening or what, or how much it has changed, but in any case it is cheap and open and is on 30th st a few blocks north of Busch.

Didya see? 10 more La Teresitas coming soon...

I agree - they are staying in the hood. Would seem to have made more sense to open in South Tampa or something.

Didya see? 10 more La Teresitas coming soon...

It's at Habana and Tampa Bay Blvd, and it is called 'Cafe Iris' I think, with the same rainbow. Much more cosy than the original location, cleaner, similar menu, and at least as good. Very sweet servers too, and no increase in price.

What's up Tampa Bay?

Amen!

(And the answer is no, but you can buy one of his dry, tasteless yuppy sandwiches wrapped in cellophane at the TPA airport for like $11. Puh-leese)

Didya see? 10 more La Teresitas coming soon...

I don't know ... I am glad they are doing so well financially, given the state of things, but I can't think of much as likely to water down quality and kill that indy atmosphere than opening 10 new places at once and going all chain-y on us. It worries me...

Luckily I prefer Arco Iris (their new second little location is just great) and West Tampa Sandwich Shop anyhow.

Tampa lunch near Busch & Armenia

There's actually tons of good ethnic food within a 1/2 mile of there - just head south on Armenia towards Waters, as rhnault said. The two dueling chinese powerhouses of Tampa - China Yuan and Yummy House - are both right there, but there are also several columbian places, puerto rican places, a vietnamese tea house, etc., all within a few blocks of that intersection. It doesn't look like much (to say the least) but Armenia and Waters is a yummy ethnic food mecca.

NEW Ethiopian in Tampa - any info?

Wow, cool. I seriously did not know that.

I didn't get to look too closely as I zipped by along Kennedy, but no, no name that I saw -n it just seemed to have a big (fairly nice and together-looking) sign saying 'Ethiopian Restaurant', and then there was am 'opening soon' banner by the sidewalk advertising Ethiopian and Italian food. They looked quite close to opening to me. I haven't managed to dig up any online skinny other than one 'rumor' in the St Pete Times that there was a new ethiopian place coming (I am not even sure it's referring to the same place).

Inspired by the sign, I talked my husband into lunch at Queen of Sheba today and it was YUMMY. I think they have gotten (yet) better. They had a buffet out, which I hadn't seen before, and they tried to talk us into that but we insisted on getting the platter off the menu, which I strongly recommend. You can't specify spiciness if you get the buffet, and the food is just sitting out and doesn't come on the proper tray of injera or anything.

NEW Ethiopian in Tampa - any info?

Hi all - I noticed yesterday that there is a brand new Ethiopian place opening on Kennedy - maybe around Himes? (I just drove by it). Does anyone know anything about it? Should I be excited?

Suspiciously, the sign said something about also having 'Italian food'. This is a bad sign, but perhaps it bodes worse for their Italian food than for their Ethiopian food ... one would assume that they are Ethiopians offering some Italian stuff to lure customers afraid of the unfamiliar, rather than the reverse.

GOOD Mexican food in Tampa Bay???

Good to know. The Armenia one certainly looks like part of a chain ... perhaps they have aspirations to chain-dom, though I agree that two doesn't count. I will try it now! It's right by my house but I have never been in there, precisely because it looked chain-like, even though I have been tempted.

GOOD Mexican food in Tampa Bay???

I assume that this place is part of a chain, and that the Don Pancho Villa at Armenia Ave. and Tampa Bay Blvd. is part of the same chain?

One night in Philly - serious foodies, medium budget

In the face of this overwhelming list of recommendations I could clearly eat well for at least two weeks ... However, for the curious, after reading messages and looking at online menus and reviews, it looks like we will eat dinner at Osteria, and also sneak in the $15 lunch at Ansill. I'll try to hit as many of these other places as I can during my trip...

Andy - where on Fowler is this? I drive the Fowler strip many times weekly and haven't noticed it. Thanks for the tip!

One night in Philly - serious foodies, medium budget

I'm going on a Sunday - i.e. the worst of both worlds - no special weekday deals and often the best chef's night off.

But that's great info about the weekday tasting menu. I'm actually in Philly for 3 nights so will be able to use more than one of these recs - it's just that Sunday night is the dinner with my foodie friend.

I didn't know that about LBF giving up the stars and going casual ... interesting!
