Cooking Channel filming Mangia Mangia truck next Weds in La Jolla

Hey all, I run the sdfoodtrucks.com page and wanted to pass on some neat info. Next Weds, April 27 around 12-1pmish, The Cooking Channel will be filming food truck Mangia Mangia at 1231 Cave St in La Jolla for their food truck show called Eat St.

They would love a big crowd and hey, who knows, maybe you can get on camera! I've seen an episode and they do seem to show some short clips of people enjoying and commenting on the truck's food. I hope it's ok to post this here.

BTW Mangia Mangia is delicious!!!!

Food trucks in SD...where are they?

I believe the Del Mar event has been postponed as they lost their venue. They mentioned it a while back on their FB page.

New La Jolla food truck: Mangia, Mangia!

I can also recommend the asparagus lasagna. to die for.
They also have a dessert that is like a lasagna as well, with nutella.... I shared it with 2 other people and we all agreed it was pretty amazing.

New La Jolla food truck: Mangia, Mangia!

I've tried a few of their dishes and I have to say I'm a fan. Big fan. The food was freaking amazing. Actually can't wait to try them again.

Food trucks in SD...where are they?

I'm about 90% sure they are gonna be on the Great Food Truck Race. :)

Food Truck Gathering-3rd Friday of every month

Yes, the owner charged the trucks to be there this time. He said he charged the entrance fee to offset the costs of having the event (renting tables & chairs, port-a-potties, etc). Have no fear, there are other cool big food truck events in the works in the coming months. You can keep up with the food truck stuff at "san diego food trucks" facebook page.

Food trucks in SD...where are they?

Hi all, I run sdfoodtrucks.com. Yes, the Copper Chimney truck is closed, because the owner opened a brick and mortar restaurant.

Mangia Mangia is awesome. Their asparagus lasagna was amazing.. can't wait to try them again.

Don't forget the 57 Degrees food truck event tonight starting at 5pm!

"Original Bacon Wrapped Hot Dog" food truck?

Are you referring to Manny's Taco cart? http://www.yelp.com/biz/mannys-taco-cart-san-diego
I saw him there last week but didn't get to try it.

Nazca Grill - San Diego

I have been looking for a good Peruvian restaurant in SD as my fiance is Peruvian and he misses his parents' cooking... and I grew to like it, too.

The papa a la huancaina was good but ridiculously overpriced for what amounted to a tiny portion of what is basically less than 1 potato with aji amarillo sauce on it..

The lomo saltado was actually quite good, and my bf is kind of an expert on this dish since it's his favorite. :) I meant to order aji de gallina, but I either made a mistake when I ordered (or the waiter did) and I got something like pollo saltado, which is like a stir-fry with chicken with spaghetti noodles and onions. It is a simple dish, and I wouldn't order it again - but for what it was it was decent. We got 1/2 pollo a la brasa to go that we ate later at home and it was quite good.

It was good, but not good enough that we’ve gone back yet. I’ve heard about Q'ero in Encinitas, but I can’t bring myself to pay a lot of money for Peruvian food when it’s so cheap to buy elsewhere (like where we used to live in NY) and at his parents' house. It's the principle!

Cafe 21

I have only been there for lunch and that was a few months ago. I am thinking that perhaps they serve more "standard" food at lunch (like chicken pesto sandwiches) and the more interesting stuff at dinner?? I don't remember seeing anything like what you mentioned on the lunch menu. I really want to go for dinner now!!

MIHO Gastrotruck

I ate at MIHO yesterday in Sorrento Valley. Tried the MLT, which was just like Liz said. I actually thought it would have been better with just a touch of salt, or maybe even a few drops of balsamic. It was good though. Liz you were right - the bread was perfect and not soggy.

The poutine was also good.. I've only had poutine twice before in Montreal and somewhere else, but my bf dubbed them "shit fries" the first time we had them. ha. Anyway, these were a lot better than that. However, I still feel like they could have been ...maybe just a bit...better. THey had mushroom gravy on them but I didn't taste mushroom flavor.

It cost me $10 for the fries and the sandwich. At first I thought MIHO was too expensive, but I guess $10 isn't bad for a nice lunch like this.

South Indian food truck in San Diego

thank you all for this info!! I really want to try this place. Excited that he has a website!

There is also one called Food Junkies
http://www.foodjunkiescatering.com

And there is Joes on the Nose (coffee & drinks) and Sweet Treats Truck (ice cream and sweet things)

MIHO Gastrotruck

Well, I guess they just need to find the audience that is willing to pay more for quality, organic, etc., and I think they are doing it. My bf was like "screw this! I can get a bigger banh mi for $4 at Cali Baguette!" But then I guess he is not the audience they are going after!!

I am just playing devil's advocate. I like MIHO and would go there again tomorrow.

MIHO Gastrotruck

As a reply to Kim S - I felt sort of the same way with MIHO's. I appreciate that their stuff is organic, homemade, etc, but for those prices for small portions, it needs to taste damn good. $6 for a small banh mi when I could have gotten a full size one at a Vietnamese shop for $4? To me, a food truck needs to be A) *more* affordable than a sit-down eatery or B) So delicious/unique that I am willing to pay for more their food than at a sit-down eatery. IMO. I don't think they are there yet. I am confident they will continue to improve though.

spinoff post - is san diego really ready for food trucks??

good points, josh. :)

However the people eating at Red Lobster and TGI Fridays in Manhattan are all tourists.

spinoff post - is san diego really ready for food trucks??

Well, I moved to San Diego for the weather and the lifestyle.. if I wanted a great food scene I'd still be back in NY. ;) That's not to say there aren't some gems here. :)

Korean BBQ Taco Truck Coming to San Diego?

Tabe is really good, IMO. I've only had KALBIQ once but I think Tabe is better.
Such a nice change to eat something like that instead of the lame food courts in Sorrento Valley :)

Need recommendations for best taco trucks in San Diego

I had something written then realized you were only asking about taco trucks. sorry, nevermind. :)

spinoff post - is san diego really ready for food trucks??

tastycakes, this is exactly something I have pondered as well!!

I was so thrilled to see a few food trucks popping up here. But I agree with you - SD is very laid back and wow, people really do not get excited about food here. I will try to talk to my co-workers about a new restaurant or something great I ate and NO ONE CARES.... I tend to get really excited about my food so I feel like a weirdo.

One time I got some Tabe BBQ tacos and brought them back to my office and the tacos looked so awesome, I ran to a co-worker and was like "Look at these!!" thinking he would be like "Wow, those look great!" Instead he crinkled up his nose and was like "Ugh, what is that?" and I said "Korean BBQ tacos" and again he was like "that sounds weird. You eat weird stuff." the POINT I am trying to make (yes, there is one) is that I also think people in SD can be closed minded and are not very adventurous when it comes to eating. (I know this is a blanket statement which could get me in trouble) I have told various people about how great the fish tacos are on the Mariscos German truck and they are like "Ew, you eat fish from a TRUCK?" That mindset will have to change if these trucks are going to thrive!!

I lived near NYC for a few years and also spent some time in Portland, OR (which has insane food trucks). I *love* food trucks and personally am ready for the food truck revolution, I am already following them all on Twitter and FB, but I don't know a lot of other people who are.

Maybe the food trucks are what will change this city into a gourmand's paradise. :)

Tabe BBQ (I think someone mentioned it earlier but called it Kabe) is really good. They are on Twitter at @tabebbq and their website is here www.tabebbq.com

Today I was driving around Mira Mesa and saw a Bareback Grill food truck!! I almost crashed my car!! They are on Twitter at @SDkiwicoach

Also this guy says he is opening up shop soon @KALBIQ

I looooove food trucks. I spent a month on Portland, OR and was in heaven. My dream is to open a food truck. If anyone knows anything about opening or running a food truck, let me know. ;)
