Group tables for solo diners on Thanksgiving 2011
I don't think this exists, unfortunately. When I posted a query on Chowhound boards a few years ago re solo dining on Thanksgiving, I ended up at Hudson Cafeteria, where I sat at a counter-type space in view of the open kitchen. It felt very lonely, as there was nobody seated next to me; also the meal wasn't so great. This year I'm also alone on Thanksgiving and am planning to attend a group dinner at a restaurant with a Meetup group I'm a member of. If you'd like to join me, send me your email address and I'll send you the info.
Saturday lunch/brunch in Philly
Okay, so what are some of these other places that are open for lunch on Saturday? The reason I posted here is that a preliminary review of Zagat's turned up very little.
Saturday lunch/brunch in Philly
I checked on the Estia website and could find no $30 lunch special as you described--there is a $17 two-course lunch special and a $30 pre-theater (5-7PM) special. The latter seems to be the one you are referring to.
I think I'll stick with Devon--it's being a chain is okay--not all chains are McDonald's or Wendy's, after all...
Saturday lunch/brunch in Philly
I will be in Philadelphia for a day next month and would welcome recommendations for a nice place to eat lunch/brunch. Since it will be an early birthday celebration for me, I'd like someplace nice (any cuisine will do) but not to break the bank (i.e., moderate price). Thanks--I posted this on the Pennsylvania board, but nobody responded.
Saturday lunch/brunch in Philly
I will be spending Saturday, July 11 in Philadelphia, meeting my brother who is coming up from Maryland (I will be coming from NYC). Can someone recommend a nice place to eat lunch or brunch? It will be an early birthday celebration for me, so I want something special but not to break the bank. Thanks.

Telepan's coffee
I recently ate dinner at Telepan--what an incredible experience! Mmmm....
As we rushing to the theatre, I didn't have time to find out the brand of coffee they use and how they make it--it was the best cup of coffee I've had in a while. Does anyone on the boards know this info or how to find out? I would appreciate it.
Fifth Ave. and 42nd Street
I am going to a talk at the library tonight with a friend and we want to get a bite to eat afterwards (around 8:30PM) nearby. Any suggestions? Moderate price, please. Any cuisine. Many thanks.
Jazz at Lincoln Center in Time-Warner Bldg.
Thanks, RGR--I'll try it sometime.
We ended up eating at The Greek Kitchen (10th Ave. and 58th St.)--it was very good and not crowded--a very pleasant meal.
Jazz at Lincoln Center in Time-Warner Bldg.
Thanks, but I wanted to eat in a real restaurant, not cafeteria-style.

We are going to a concert here on Saturday night and would like to eat dinner beforehand (around 5:30ish). Could someone recommend a moderate-price (no more than $20 per entree) restaurant not too far from here with decent-sized portions? I ate at Whym over a year ago and remember it as being good, but don't know how it is now. Any cuisine but Italian. Thanks.
Eating without the din near Columbia University?
I have always liked Symposium--so there!
I have tried Meridiana twice and never had a decent meal there.
Saji's is great--use it a lot.
Eating without the din near Columbia University?
A place I like that nobody has mentioned is Calcutta Cafe on Broadway between 104-105 Sts. Its ambience is serene, it is owner run (the owner actually lives in my bldg!), and the food is good. I like it better than Indian Cafe and Indus Valley. Good food and service and quiet--you can have conversations there.
quiet, reasonably priced restaurant in Village or below
Thanks so much! I'm a big fan of Jean-Georges and just made a reservation here. Really looking forward to this.
quiet, reasonably priced restaurant in Village or below
I am meeting some relatives I've never met before--found each other in a genealogical search online!--and so since the only contact we've had is via e-mail and on the phone arranging lunch, I'd like to find a quiet, mid-priced venue for lunch on Friday. Many thanks.
Orologio report
So we went to Orologio for dinner before the show last night and enjoyed it. We shared a salad to start: lettuce, tomatoes, hearts of palm, shaved parmesan on top and a great dressing. I had homemade spaghetti with lamb ragout and 2 kinds of grated cheese on top--yummy and satisfying. My companion had lamb shanks with potato. For dessert we shared a large serving of their made-in-house tiramisu, which hit the spot. The price was reasonable. We would go there again.
East Village restaurant recommendations
We are going to the Theater for the New City (1st Ave. between 9th and 10th Streets) and would like to have a nice dinner beforehand. Any cuisine will do--just good food. Thanks!

We are going to the Theater for the New City (1st Ave. between 9th and 10th Sts.) this Friday evening. Looking for good dinner beforehand. TIA.
best thai on the UWS?
I like Thai Market too--it's always crowded, which is a good sign.
quiet, reasonably priced restaurant with round table
Thanks for the recommendation. I doubt we'd be more than 8. I'll check this out.
quiet, reasonably priced restaurant with round table
Dinner, but if it's noisy it won't work for us.
quiet, reasonably priced restaurant with round table
Yes, I thought of this too, but am not familiar with Chinese restaurants that might work--anyone know specific ones? Thanks.
quiet, reasonably priced restaurant with round table
Is there such a place in NYC with decent food? Any cuisine is fine--what's essential is a round table, not too expensive (under $15 per entree), and quiet enough to talk. Thanks.
What restaurant did you eat at on Thanksgiving?
I ate at the Hudson Cafeteria, at the bar (they have an open kitchen). Except for a couple seated a discreet distance away from me, I was alone--ugh! The waitstaff and cookstaff were very sweet to me, but I was surrounded by mostly large groups of people--those communal tables were not for singletons on Thanksgiving. The food was underwhelming--best thing on my turkey dinner was the sweet potato souffle. I should have gone to a Mexican restaurant in Queens with Mike--perhaps next year, all of us foodies who are alone should go somewhere together--but how to arrange this? I think it's a good idea.
First trip to Barcelona! Where to eat?!?! (Coming from San Francisco, LA and Chicago)
I was in Barcelona in Sept. and my 2 favorite places were Cal Pep (near El Born in Barceloneta), a fish tapas place, and Ciudad Condal, near Placa Catalunya, a great tapas place for lunch--I had superb and unforgettable meals at both. Have a great time--Barcelona rocks!
reasonably priced, good places to eat around Park Plaza Hotel
From $15 to $20 or so for an entree.
reasonably priced, good places to eat around Park Plaza Hotel
I will be attending a conference in Boston Dec. 13-15 and would like some recommendations for lunch and dinner places near the Park Plaza Hotel.
UWS, Recs for moderately priced breakfast, lunch, coffee and snacks etc
Zabar's Cafe is great for blintzes, bagel and lox breakfast special, and the ability to sit at a counter and talk to folks from the 'hood and beyond. It's very reasonable too.
Solo diner in Manhattan for Thanksgiving Day
You read my mind, RGR! The communal tables at Le Pain Quotidien were exactly what I envisioned. I doubt they will be open on Thanksgiving, but I will check.
