World Cup restaurants/bars
I watched USA v England at the Bell House and it was packed, but it's huge and they have a projection screen, so it was a really exciting environment. Burgers and dogs from a grill on the street continued the theme of the day, serving Stilton or American burgers or hot dogs v bangers. Three dollar Newcastle pints too. They're sure to do something similar for most big games. Brazil v Ivory Coast anyone?
Also don't forget Sheep Station, esp for the Australia matches.

The Vanderbit ripping off The Wing Bar
My thoughts exactly, Jen. Half way down this thread, I had to remind myself we were actually using such passionate prose in service of Brussels sprouts. When's someone going to deep-fry a kohlrabi?
When Is Mango Season?
I seem to remember spring brings mangoes, but living in the asphalt jungle my seasonal radar may be skewed. I wanna get a jump on the great mangoes, especially the ones at the Indian places in Queens. Can anyone offer assistance?
I'd also love the name of of couple of those places where you can buy a box of heaven. Though I suppose I could search for that too.
thanks
Where Can I Find Manioca So I Can Make Farofa for My Feijoada?
Kalustyan's! Of course! I was just there last week, why didn't I think of it?
thanks
Where Can I Find Manioca So I Can Make Farofa for My Feijoada?
I haven't been able to find manioc flour to make farofa. Does anyone know where I can get some? Brooklyn or Manhattan preferable, though I'm sure most answers will be Queens.
Is there something I could use as a substitute?
Also, does anyone have a killer recipe?
Thanks

Tired of my pizza delivery place...looking for new options--Brooklyn-Slope
I like Peppe's and am glad they're still around. But that thread was astounding. It was like watching time lapse film of an animal decaying before your very eyes. It was a pile on, many -- maybe most-- very positive to be sure, but watching a restaurant get breathless buzz and then be picked apart in the space of several days was really something to behold. From belle of the ball to old hat in 60 seconds.

Yeah the food is all fantastically well-prepared at Toby's. The salads are creative and delish. The apps, great. Pies, impeccable. Plus they always have a great selection of beers on tap. I wish the TVs weren't so prominent, but that's probably a gripe for a different board.
@famdoc, I'd love to hear what you think about Luigi's. If you're a carnivore and you're in the market for a whole pie, Gio's Supreme is a killer choice. He shaves homemade sopressata (from the guy at A&S) onto the pie when it comes out of the oven. I can't even remember what else is on it, but it hardly matters. Onions...something else. Plus the fresh mozz pie is great too (available in slices too). Drizzled with his proprietary secret basil oil.... Yum.
Le or The P'tit Paris
This is something our poor underserved 'hood really needs. I hope it's as good as it looks.

Peppe's is not better than Luigi's, sorry fam. But of course these disagreements can go on forever, right? Remember that endless and distructive Peppe's thread when the place opened? I like 'em fine and they're great people, but Luigi's is the place.
I think Toby's is excellent too, and the family and I love to go in there for salads, pies and beer. But spendy it is! The first time I went there with another couple plus young daughter, we had several drinks, maybe 3 pies, a couple of salads and dessert, and it was more than 200, with tip. Seemed a little steep. But it hasn't stopped us from going.

Montreal Bagels in NYC (coming soon)!
I did not see bialys, buttertart. Unfortunately as the bialy is one of the greatest bread products ever conceived.
Yeah Mike, they are a bagel you have to overpower before you can eat it. Super SUPER chewy. Old school.
Le or The P'tit Paris
I saw some beer taps, so that's a good sign.
The spelling bugs me too. It's not like they didn't have enough room on the sign to fit "petit".
whatever, as long as it's worth going to, i'll be happy.
Best Feijoada in NYC??
Anyone have a fave feijoada in town? I would expect to find it in Queens or maybe Newark, but there could be one lurking just about anywhere. Any stand outs??
thanks
Montreal Bagels in NYC (coming soon)!
I made the trek to Bagels and More (Bagels 'n More?) and I have to agree with you Mike R. It's a pretty decent bagel in the old school Bagel Hole mold. Super dense, some char on them, a snappy intense little mofo. Worth the trip if you live in Ditmas or Kensington, etc. I froze a bunch and will report back about how they respond to suspended animation.
Moving to Red Hook... what are your faves?
Something new is in the old 360 spot, but I haven't had the chance to check it out. Any reports?
Fave spots: Good Fork, Ft. Defiance, H&A for karaoke, Sunny's of course. Used to love El Huipil, not sure if its replacement is up to the task. Hope so.
Olive Vine (15th/7th) gone?
That would be a shame. Especially now that Laila is gone too.
Montreal Bagels in NYC (coming soon)!
That's pretty close to me in the Terrace. I'll give them a try. Thanks for the tip!
Best Burrito in NY?
I've always liked the burritos (and pretty much everything else) at Lupe's on 6th Ave and Watts just above Canal St. Plus it's been there a long time and reminds me of Hank's Wild Years.
Montreal Bagels in NYC (coming soon)!
Forget about honey in the water, what about trying a little salt in the dough? The Montreal bagels I had when I was there were screaming for a pinch of salt. I prefer the Platonic ideal of a NY bagel hands down, and Bagel Hole comes closest. Other than there the NY bagel is on the endangered species list. I'm excited to give these upstarts from Montreal another shot though. And poutine! Ooh la la!
Where is this place going to be again? I seem to have missed that part of the discussion. Thanks.
Smoked Ham Hocks? Where to buy in Brooklyn?
Jubilat Polish butcher/smokehouse on 5th ave next to the Prospect Expwy is the one-stop shop for the best version of all that sort of thing. Great fresh and smoked sausage, fresh meat, sauerkraut, pickles, fantastic stuffed cabbage on Thursday evenings too. Hey today's Thursday! I may head over there myself.
Brooklyn's Best Sandwiches
I may have misnamed the Market. Puebla Mini Market perhaps? Anyway it's on 5th Ave and 38th St. Torta counter in the back with more than 20 varieties available.
PS: I'd like the 411 on the superior Jamaican patties too. Thanks
Brooklyn's Best Sandwiches
Great addition with the schnitzel mention. I like Schnitzi, but have also had really good chicken schnitzel at Schnitzel King of Bklyn. I like the variety of add-ons available at The King better.
Brooklyn's Best Sandwiches
I'm looking for the best sandwiches in the Borough of Kings. I have some that I'd put on the list; do you have others???
My (incomplete) list of the Best Sandwiches in Brooklyn (in no particular order)
*Panelle Special at Ferdinando's
*Grilled Pork Banh Mi at Ba Xuyen
*DeFonte's Roast Beef, Eggplant, Fresh Mozz, Gravy, S&P (seeded hero)
*Torta from Pueblo Market (not sure which variety)
*Chicken Cutlet Hero from Catene
*Lioni's hero (not sure which one)
*Cubano from Cibao on Smith
*Falafel from ??? used to say The Fountain but I'm not so sure anymore.
*Rollin' Roast Beef (as long as you put onions, gravy, salt and pepper on it)
*Spicy Beef Patty inside coco bread from Christie's
but I know there are more, like does anyone know of a good sabich? Where's the best tuna salad? Pastrami? BLT? Roti? Sausage & Peppers? Chicken Parm?
(You can probably tell I'm a SoBroo cat with little working knowledge of W'burg/G'pernt/B''wick etc. Love to hear suggestions from up north)
One Weekend in London. What MUST I Eat?
thanks for the great suggestions, everyone. I hope I can return the favor when you come to New York.
I'll be sure to report back on what I find.
best, HankyT
One Weekend in London. What MUST I Eat?
Fair enough, but if you went to the US and didn't try to find the best burger and slice of pizza you could, you would be missing something important.
So then, what IS your national cuisine?
One Weekend in London. What MUST I Eat?
I'd like to hit a few of the classics: English Breakfast Fry-Up, a curry, fish and chips and the like, plus some other things I shouldn't miss. Any suggestions?
I'd also like suggestions for the best places to go for the aforementioned classics.
Thanks

Non-Spicy Options at Spicy and Tasty??
I really want to go to S&T tonight (first time) but I'll have my kids in tow. They're both pretty little and not so into spicy. Are there things on the menu (dumplings, noodles) that they would be able to eat?
Under the F Train/McDonald Ave -- Where would YOU go??
Taking suggestions for places to go near the F train/McDonald Ave. Nothing closer in than Church Ave (no Slope/Carroll Gardens/Smith St). I'm looking for someplace I haven't been that's really worth the trip.
Must be a relatively easy walk from the F and shouldn't be too spendy.
Thanks!
Where to get ingredients for feijoada??
I'm looking to get some carne seca, linguica and manioca for feijoada. Where should I go? I'm sure the answer is Queens somewhere, but where?
thanks
Del Re Knife Truck
I subjected my knives to the Auto da Fe of Del Re once, partly for the novelty but mostly because I had dull-ass knives. Can't remember exactly what he charged me but I think it was about $5-$7 per blade. He brought a very special boning knife back from the dead for me and I'm grateful for that, but I remember thinking when I saw my chef's knife that there was an awful lot of steel missing and there'd be nothing left of the old girl after a couple more trips through his grinder.
