cast iron skillet question

the standard is to measure across the top actually...and many cast iron skillets say the size on the bottom btw. better in these instances to go "smaller" than larger..send along the recipe if it turns out great

Mother/Daughter Foodie Week... Please review Itinerary :)

Also from out of town and thumbs up on ABC...had a fantastic lunch there and fun to poke around that area (mother daughter suggestion...go to Journelle on 17th before or after and lingerie shop together)...at ABC don't miss the Crab Toast...everthing was terrific
I would also suggest Graffiti on E. 10th because its so original and such a wonderful atmosphere...every foodie I send there from out of town loves it..and then you can go to Chikalicious for dessert! Both a nice contrast to the other places you are going

Park City (thumbs up and down)/Deer Valley

Just got back from Park City.
Anyway...AVOID Mustang. Hotel recommended when Zoom was booked and it was deeply mediocre. Very expensive (I later realized more than others that had been recommended here) and so not worth it.
On the other hand we went to Wahso another night...also pricey (though not as much) but totally worth it we all thought
To the other extreme..went to El Chubasco and all thought it was terrific. But it is order at counter kind of place (they bring food to table) and self serve at the fantastic salsa bar. Very very casual and local...but delicious.

Passover '09 ideas

Google Nigella Lawson Clementine Cake. I make it without the baking soda. It turns out fine. If I am feeling fancy then I separate the eggs and fold in whipped egg whites. It is a great recipe and Trader Joe's carries the Ground Almonds.

Ditto the attached which is from Joan Nathan's Cookbook and was made by the mother of the owners of the old wonderful Capsuto Freres in Tribeca (when it was really an outpost)

PASSOVER BROWNIES-GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE WHOLE YEAR

3/4 cup of butter or margarine
3/4 cup of sugar
5 eggs, separated
6 ounces bittersweet chocolate (like Baker’s)
6 ounces finely ground almonds or almond flour
Pinch of salt

1. Cream the butter and sugar together. Mix in the egg yolks.

2. Melt the chocolate over a double boiler. Cool and add to the butter mixture. Add the almonds.

3. Beat the egg whites until stiff but not dry. Fold into the batter. Pour into a 9 inch greased baking tin. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 45 minutes. Cool and cut in squares.

Yield: about 24 Brownies

HELP! Need replacement in Chinatown for Kam Chueh

you are terrific...I saw on the boards that CG has private room...but they are usually depressing ..do you know about their's...thanks...am having a friend go over -if he can- and check out both and send some photos so I can figure it out
No matter what will eat at CG at some point while in town...but CS might work better for the party..people tend to go table to table alot...years ago I diverged once and had it at some other place where it was so crowded and tables so close together that we couldn't tablehop..less fun...you guys have been fantastic
I owe you some LA tips

HELP! Need replacement in Chinatown for Kam Chueh

thanks so much for your help here...your posts look amazing. Since you clearly know all these places...atmosphere is also an issue...and it not being too too noisy/crowded on a Sunday night (or crammed)...it seems to now be between Cantoon Gardens and Chatham Sq....doesn't have to be Seafood...loved that about Kam Chueh but it was as much the atmosphere as the food for this event...there was a little more space betweenthe tables and it was a little quieter than most of the other places..andno..we don't want to do banquet rooms...they get "sad"..thanks so much for your advice

HELP! Need replacement in Chinatown for Kam Chueh

I live in LA. For years I have hosted, every few years, a large gathering of friends (20-40) in Chinatown. Casual but not funky. We would bring wine and order a ton of food. It was reasonable enough that I was able to host it. It has almost always been at Kam Chueh (mostly in main dining room). The food was good, not always great. The atmostphere was perfect balance of energy.
I'm coming again in a few weeks. Got on the phone to make the reservation (having invited everyone)...and BOO HOO..it has closed. Suggestions?
