Gulf area Oysters compared to Northern varieties (General Comp)

Interesting. I just came back from New Orleans this past weekend, and the raw oysters at Casamento's made me gag. I'm used to briny, sweet, saline oysters from the likes of Hog Island (Northern CA) and the Pacific NW.

That being said, the chargrilled and fried oysters I ate at Casamento's were amazing. (Especially that pickle!) Cooking the oyster seemed to eliminate the off flavors that made me gag (which reminded me of rotten earth/a deep bog, etc).

Gluten free beignets?

Thanks for the tip! I just called them, and they do in fact make gluten free beignets, but they won't start until mid-October or so. I believe their reasoning behind this is that it gets too hot in the kitchen.

Also, it sounds like you're right - they told me they're the only gluten free bakery in the area.

I'll keep my eyes open and report back if I find anything, though!

Gluten free beignets?

So I realize this may be an oxymoron, and that these may not even exist in the depths of the mind of a true beignet lover, but... I'm traveling to New Orleans with my partner who is gluten free, and I'm on a search.

Does anyone know if gluten free beignets exist in the greater Nola area? I'll be very grateful for any tips!

Good source for kim chi in SF or north bay?

Thanks so much! Solid kim chi is all I'm after at this point, but I will definitely check out Kukje Korean when I'm down in Daly City. Would love to bring some panchan back home.

Cheers,
Aron

Good source for kim chi in SF or north bay?

Hello all-

Does anyone know of a good source for quality kim chi (or kim chee - transliteration sucks sometimes for search) here in San Francisco or Marin/Healdsburg area? I'm looking to buy a couple quarts of delicious fermentation to put on pork tacos, (even though it might be cliche at this point.)

Thanks in advance!

San Diego - "Solar Power" Foodies?

Hello all friendly foodies -- anyone traveling to the Solar Power Conference this next week and looking to get together for some adventurous eating? I'm here now until next Friday (10/17). Looking at the boards I've gathered a couple destinations for food exoduses (exodi?): Mariscos German and Aqui es Texcoco... anyone know the area well?

The Gaslamp district just doesn't do it for me. Although, I will say I made an interesting find last night at a place called Calaco Grill which had homemade tortillas (flour and corn). The only taco worth getting out of the four I tried though was the Burraco -- a mix of avocado salsa, carne asada, and melted cheese. OK, it was more than that, don't hold it to my description.

So who's ready to go on some adventures?

Aron
