Allergy-ridden dinner guest
Hello all -
Hosting a last-minute dinner party tonight. One of my guests is allergic to the following:
nightshades (tomatoes. . . etc)
wheat
soy
shellfish
Capsicums (including all chilies)
Ideas for a quick menu that accomodates this and feeds four (one woman, three men, so maybe it should serve six).
fish market in ocean city, md
so maybe i'm framing my search wrong, but i can find no reviews about spots to purchase quality fish in oc . . . any tips? I'm up on the Fenwick end of things, and just want some nice fresh seafood to cook tonight.
whole beef tenderloin, durham nc
any good sources? I've called whole foods and cliffs so far -- whole foods is (of course) ridiculously expensive, but Cliff's is suspiciously cheap. Any recs?
Best simple recipes?
Yes! My husband has firmly told me that we are limited to one grocery store per shopping trip, but there always seems to be that one ingredient. . .Don't get me wrong, I love hunting for different ingredients, but the time is simply not there anymore.
We're trying your noodles tonight! Thanks!
Best simple recipes?
so after many years of cooking the most elaborate recipes i could get my hands on, i've made a new resolution to embrace simple, clean recipes - preferably those using five ingredients or less. . .
what are your favorites? any suggestions for good sources? (i'm seeking recipes using fresh, seasonal ingredients, and it's ok if they take a little time to prepare).
Durham to Asheville...good lunch eats?
Hey folks...I am a newly minted southern hound who is taking a little road trip tomorrow over to Asheville. Looking for not to be missed experiences along this particular stretch of the road. Husband is a die-hard barbecue fan, and although I'm a veggie, I love me some hush-puppies and mac and cheese! Any recommendations, not too far off of 40?
one pound of mixed-up tomatoes
red, yellow, orange and green, various sizes, but no bigger then a golf ball
what should I make?
other ingredients i have on hand, seeking to get rid of
lil'bit of ricotta salata
crepes
parsley/cilantro
snow peas
bean sprouts
What are your tried and true favorites from Epicurious.com
Good to know i'm not the only epicurious addict...cookbooks are hard for me now, where are the rankings?
some of my favorites:
shrimp and grits with roasted red peppers
black bean tofu and shitake mushrooms
clam, basil, and cherry tomato linguine
red bell pepper and eggplant tian with anchovies
curried chicken salad ( I make it with Tempeh marinated in the dressing)
salmon and mussels in saffron sauce
catfish tacos
tuna tacos
Using my Italian tuna packed in Olive oil-recipe ideas
I'm completely addicted to tuna packed in oil. These are some of my go to recipes:

Amazing vegetarian experience in Mendocino
Thanks for your help...any other casual recs for on the road?
Road trip from SF to Mendocino and back...best veggie picks?
My husband and I are headed up to SF in a couple of weeks to launch a road trip following this route:
SF
Point Reyes
Gualala (St. Orres)
Mendocino
Petaluma
back in SF
I'm overwhelmed by the information about restaurants on this board, and am looking for specific recs about budget friendly (though we're up for a few splurges here and there, though not of the french laundry category of splurge); veggie friendly (eats fish) restaurants. Are there any local specialties we should seek out? thanks in advance for your help.
domku, never again!
My husband and I moved to columbia heights a couple of months ago, and immediately were drawn to Domku, which is really only a few blocks from us. Our first visit, ho-hum, but it was dinner, so we thought, well, maybe it's more of a breakfast place. Second visit, no gravalax. Third and final visit...i ordered the salmon hash, hubby ordered the norwegian bendict. It came out literally ice cold. tried to get waitresses attention to no avail. resigned ourselves to eating it (it would have been ok if not ice cold). The benedict was served on circles of sourdough that were rock hard. Our coffee was never refilled. To cap the experience, the server informed us at THE END of the meal that the credit card machine wasn't working, but that she's be happy to copy down all my cc info and run it through "whenever."
Domku could be such an awesome restaurant, and we need awesome restaurants in this area sorely. but we will never go there again, and i recommend that you avoid it as well.
decadent, quick, valentine day's ideas?
Any ideas about quick menus for valentine's day? i'd like to do something with seafood, possibly crab...and be able to throw it together in at least an hour, as that is one of my late nights at work.
thanks in advance!
herbivore's dilemma
Thanks for the recommendation. My father just read that book and recommended it to me. I'm not sure if it is a reaction to one particular book, but rather the cumulative effect of various newspaper articles and books. There are many adverse environmental and nutritional conditions which stem directly from the manner in which meat is "produced" in this country. My aversion to meat at this point is derived less from concerns about humane conditions, and more about the quality of the product which I can afford to incorporate into my daily diet. While I'm aware that there are other options, they typically have a pretty fat price tag, which as a teacher is hard to sustain.
herbivore's dilemma
I think that I may adopt a similar approach. However, the cost involved with eating meat ethically makes vegetarianism the more practical approach for me. Plus, I can't envision cutting out fish at this point. I think that what made it difficult in the past was that I essentially tried to cook the same dishes I had cooked prior to cutting out meat. Now I'm discovering a whole different world of cooking options, and I'm pretty inspired by it. I've taken a lot of suggestions from this board in terms of cookbooks, and am waiting eagerly for them to arrive.
What to eat with cottage cheese?
I love the Friendship 1% fat cottage cheese on top of a nice, hot blueberry waffle, drizzled all over with syrup.
herbivore's dilemma
What is asafoetida? Do you just leave it out, or replace it with something?
herbivore's dilemma
Do you have a recipe for your "crabcakes?" They sound interesting. I was just checking out a recipe for veggie meatloaf made out of lentils on foodnetwork. Thanks for the vegan outreach link...
herbivore's dilemma
Thanks for the recommendations. I definitely think a new source of recipes is in order. I've typically cooked off the 'net and left the cookbooks on the shelf, but am having trouble finding dependable "gourment" veggie recipes on the traditional websites. I'm heading over to Amazon to check out your picks. I love indian, thai, south-east asian cooking...while at the same time don't want to live out of the wok. thanks!
herbivore's dilemma
I am a newly minted vegetarian, freshly off a diet of "Fast Food Nation" and a couple nasty articles about meat processing. I've gone through stints of vegetarianism before, but often leave the diet due to my love of cooking...how can you make a killer pan sauce from tofu?
Any suggestions for how to make it stick this time?
toy show dinner plans
my husband and I are coming to NY this weekend, love good food, so wish to dine selectively. We're looking for a mid-range, interesting, different restaurant with creative decor and a good atmosphere.
veggie friendly cooking website
I am a child of the 21st century and depend mostly on websites to get my recipes (epicurious, food and wine). They have limited vegetarian selections. Are there any good websites with creative and dependable recipes for vegetarians? Thanks for your help!
Using shredded potatoes in gnocchi
I'm usually flexible with recipes, but when it's a "technique" recipe that my momma didn't teach me, I tend to go by the book the first time too. Plus, you don't cross Lidia. She'll come after you with her wooden spoon.
Cauliflower recipes - Dazzle me.
My husband and I make this roasted curried cauliflower recipe about twice a month (and we try not to repeat too often).

Using shredded potatoes in gnocchi
They came out relatively well, for my first attempt. I was really rushing to get them rolled and cut and into the water, because lidia makes it seem like a ticking time bomb in her recipe, so they were not the most beautiful gnocchi in the world - but the texture was really nice. I froze a bunch of them, and haven't tried those yet to see how they held up.
Using shredded potatoes in gnocchi
I made lidia's gnocchi last week, and used the shredder attachment of the food processor to "rice" the potatoes. I think the idea is that the shredding allows the potatoes to dry out better, which is why you have to spread them into a thin layer..
or it's just to make you really appreciate gnochhi!
Thai Market in Silver Spring
I love the thai market in silver spring! They are really friendly there. The last time we went there we were cooking pad thai, and the man behind the counter helped us find all the ingredients we needed...from tamarind paste to red tofu! They also have galanga, kaffir lime leaves, dried shrimp...all the stuff you need to make a decent thai curry! Their produce isn't bad either.
We also scored a big ol'mortar and pestle there for 20 bucks.
mushrooms galore!
Alright chowhounders...
I've ended up with a surplus of mushrooms (button, shitake) in the fridge...I feel like cooking something time-intensive and highly rewarding, but that will not violate my freshly minted healthy eating resolution.
I love EVERY kind of cooking...Ideas??
