Guu is Guu(d) – review + pics

IMO, it is only because this is something 'new' in Toronto that people in Toronto has never experience that before. I don't understand the rave too, but I have never been there. For me, I cannot find a food reason to go there especially when there is a line -up.

The Very Best Chinese Restaurants in Scarborough?

Casa Imperial can also be good at Cantonese food, it provides haute cuisine in Cantonese food. Putting Maple Yip and Casa Imperial together is like putting George and Weezie together. If you are willing to spend over $100 or even $200+ per person at Casa Imperial, I am pretty sure you will be getting some nice Cantonese food in Toronto standard.

Ingradient can be expensive at Casa Imperial, have you tried their $1000+ set menu for 10 people ?

O'Mei Chinese Restaurant Highway 7

That is not easy.

Many restaurant may not even translate it properly and cause serious confusion. I have seen beef tripe translated as "Albert Yip", because the Cantonese word for beef tripe is "牛柏葉" which pronounced just like "Albert Yip".

Men-Only Birthday Bash - N44, Auberge du Pommier or Centro?!

It isn't worth $300.

Men-Only Birthday Bash - N44, Auberge du Pommier or Centro?!

True, but still .... it is too hard to imagine I am in Kyoto while I am at JCCC ...

Men-Only Birthday Bash - N44, Auberge du Pommier or Centro?!

I disagree, with $300 (+ tax and tip on top) a person, it does not worth it at all.

The best of Markham and Richmond Hill

I have different experience, I have been to MANY of Asian restaurant in Markham/Richmond hill and they are good for 2. I can easier named you dozens. My food at Star King are certainly not acceptable to me. For example, the grilled chicken from my Vietnamese vermicelli (檬) tastes sour (not from the fish sauce sour) and without a hint of grilled aroma. Well, maybe it is acceptable to you.

The best of Markham and Richmond Hill

Star King - Probably some of the worst Thai/Viet food I had in Toronto area. That's around one year ago but things may have changed. But the food is a joke to me back then.

best Chinese south of Eglinton?

I am afraid what you are saying is right. This also happens in the suburb area as you can see we are getting more and more HK style cafe (Cha Chan Tang) with mediocre quality across the board serving more or less same kind of food, and those 'better' quality Chinese restaurants closed down or going downhill...sad.

Men-Only Birthday Bash - N44, Auberge du Pommier or Centro?!

Sorry to say but I think any of these three will not give a better experience than Langdon Hall. If I have to pick one, I will go for the tasting menu at Auberge. I have not done tasting menu there though, only a la carte a few months ago, but we almost tried all the items on the menu that time. Taste overall is above average in Toronto standard with generous portion. Atmosphere is quite romantic in my book.

Just notice that they charge $19.5 for a glass of 2009 Belle Glos 'Meiomi' Pinot Noir ... better ask if you can BYOB !

Overpriced wine in Toronto (moved from Ontario board)

Yes, true in general, except once in a while, you can find some wine that is cheaper than getting it at LCBO.

Supposedly best Shanghainese food in Toronto - Forgettable!!!!!

Hey Charles, I also think this is the best we can get in Toronto area for Shanghainese food. The dish I like most in there is the stirred fry eel with thick sauce. (鳝糊). They put sizzling garlic on top which smell real good.

Toddler friendly (with highchairs) restaurants on West end?

Langdon Hall has high chair available. I have asked for it one time. They also have a patio.

Need to pick one restaurant to impress

Maybe having a kaiseki is a good chance to show Mila's friends Japanese food is not only about raw fish and food presentation can be better than lots of high end Paris restaurant. It is pretty pathetic if someone still think Japanese food is only about raw fish after having a kaiseki at Kyo-Ya :P

Best Teppanyaki in the GTA?

I have not visited Nami recently. Last time I was there, I ask them to prepare me a sashimi plate and I found the variety and quality not bad.

But if you have kaiseki, no one will not say "Yeah, it was just raw fish" because most of the course in kaiseki is not raw fish.

Need to pick one restaurant to impress

No decent steak in Asia?! May not be the same style, but have you tried A5 charbroiled genuine Kobe beef, say in Tokyo or Osaka ? I would second the suggestion of Kyo Ya for Kaiseki or Per Se if the friends really prefer something like French cuisine.

Fall LCBO release

You are right, it will improve with time. I decanted it for 2 hours, everyone at the BBQ party like it. I did not take note on that one, but from my memory, the aroma is complex quite open with good tannin level balancing it pretty good. For me, I like it better than the 2006 Robert Mondavi Reserve Cab which I think is not quite ready to drink...the tannin is killing me.

Fall LCBO release

A whole case of Opus One, wow. That wine is very seriously marked up by LCBO !! One can get it for less than $200 in the States.

Fall LCBO release

It is good, you should try it soon ! I finish all mine. There are 24 bottles of 2005 Jonata, el corazon de jonata (same, $59.99) at the Laird location a few week ago, but they are all gone now !

Fall LCBO release

I think different LCBO location has different policy. But just as what Charles mentioned, I think many of them start to sell a day ahead of the release date. Hot items such as the Dominus 2007 (which you can actually found it cheaper here than the States) or the Jonata 2006 Todos are almost all gone before their official release date.

For that 96 pts Riesling, I pick up 12 bottles at the Bayview location on Friday, one day before the release date. I check some of the LCBO locations on Saturday which listed on-line they still have some stock, but when I called, they either said they are all gone or they can't find any.

From the look of the menu, is it $250 a couple (you and your wife) all inclusive ?

meh

Actually regarding Cava, it is more than meh to me, I will not go there if I am the one who pick the restaurant. It just does not worth it.

Back to this topic, I think the biggest meh for me is Kaiseki Sakura.
