Easy Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

Made this a couple of times. It is always a crowd pleaser. I used Virgil's BBQ sauce.

What would be on your NYC Restaurant "Bucket List"?

In Amsterdam, there is a great pancake place near Anne Frank's house.

I'd get the onion soup dumplings at Stanton Social or go to Chinatown for soup dumplings. There was a really good place I went to months ago, but I can't remember the name.

Breast Practices

First of all, there is no smell associated with breast-feeding. If someone pours a glass of milk at the next table, can you smell the milk? So how are you going to smell droplets of milk going straight into a baby's mouth?

Secondly, babies don't make THAT much noise when they are eating. It doesn't sound like they are slurping soup. I doubt you would be able to hear them unless you were sitting next to the mom at an extremely quiet restaurant. You might hear the baby sighing (gasp!).

Young babies who are exclusively fed breast milk don't have particularly stinky poop. Formula fed babies, & older babies who also eat solid foods have stinkier poop. I wouldn't want to see someone changing a baby on the table of a resto. That's unsanitary.

The spit up doesn't really smell bad either. It smells sour if you don't clean it off your shirt. It's not anywhere close to having an adult vomit, which immediately pollutes the room with it's smell. If you were sitting right next to a mom, you probably wouldn't be able to smell the spit up. Any mom worth her salt will have a wet wipe on hand to take care of it. And it's not like in the movies where babies projectile vomit on everyone. Usually it looks like some whitish drool.

Unless you are in a really fancy restaurant, most bathrooms don't have a good chair for breast-feeding. How the heck do you breast-feed standing up? Even if you are skilled enough to unbutton your shirt & bra, and then latch a screaming, squirming baby to your breast all WITH ONE HAND (good luck with that); the baby will start to feel unbearably heavy, really quick. It would also be hard to get the baby in the proper feeding position, if you decided to feed him on the toilet (besides it being really gross).

Hooter covers are the best invention ever! I also like the nursing tops & bras from Destination Maternity. I think most new moms feel a bit embarrassed about the whole breast-feeding thing too. We don't want you staring at our boobs.

Where I can I get a big cake for a party (UES)?

Hi,

Where, in the UES, can I buy a big cake (for 60 guests) that tastes great? Or possibly several different cakes to rig up a "Viennese Table." Thanks!

Dinner near NY Presbyterian Hospital? (68th & York)

Hi,

I'm going to dinner with my mom & her boyfriend. I am looking for some place near NY Presbyterian hospital. I would prefer a place where the entrees are around $15 or under. My mom's boyfriend likes to bring his own wine to restaurants, so bonus points if it is a BYOB place, or a place that won't charge a corkage fee.

Thanks!!!

Donut Muffins

These came out dry & dense for me. Nothing like a cake donut, maybe closer to a scone. Calling them donut muffins is totally false advertising!

Dinner party ideas?

I'm having a dinner party to celebrate my brother's engagement. It's going to be a buffet. I live in an apt, so I can't grill anything. We do have roof access with a view of the river. It might be fun to get everyone on the roof & watch the sunset, so maybe some food that would be easy to take on the elevator? It's just my immediate family, 10 people. They know all my go-to dishes. I want to do something special. I've been scouring my cookbooks & the food blogs, but was wondering if you guys had any good ideas. Thanks!!

Interesting food in Midtown?

The dinner is Thurs night. We'd like to stick to Midtown East. Everyone works between 59th & 51st, but they live in Murray Hill. Like I said, we have some flexibility in the budget, but I don't want to go someplace super-expensive.

BEST FOOD I'VE EVER HAD AT A WEDDING??

I also checked out Battery Gardens & Water's Edge when I was looking at venues 2 yrs ago. I didn't like the food at Battery Gardens as much as the Hyatt & I think the room would be awkward for 250 people. I felt like Water's Edge needed some updating. It struck me as dusty & stuck in time.

The other place I considered having my wedding was at the Lighthouse by Chelsea Piers. Abigail Kirsch caters this place. I think you also have to use their florist. The space is pretty blank, so you most likely will be spending more on flowers to decorate it.

BEST FOOD I'VE EVER HAD AT A WEDDING??

I highly recommend the Hyatt in Jersey City, which is where I got married. It is easily accessible to NYC & you get a fabulous view of the Hudson River & NY Skyline. The Hyatt Wedding Planner, Concierge & Head Waiter all made sure that our wedding ran smoothly. We were looking to cut costs, so we chose to do an extra appetizer instead of a dessert (I liked their savory stuff better than their desserts). We just served wedding cake for dessert. As part of our wedding package, Buddy the guy on the "Cake Boss" show did our wedding cake (He gives you some different cakes to choose from. If you want something crazy like fireworks shooting out of your cake, obviously you will pay extra). Everybody was raving about the sushi station, so definitely get that. They will set up a "private cocktail Hour" in your bridal suite, if you want that. And stock your bridal suite with liqour if you want to have an after-party with select guests. The bridal suite has a huge balcony. We had about 30 people there.

Private room for a Sunday luncheon?

I'd prefer UES, but I know choices are limited. The guests are women - late 20s to mid 40s. Cuisine- open, but no sushi or Indian. Price- would prefer under $30 pp.

Thanks!

An alternative to sumac?

I want to make Food & Wine's recipe for Palestinian Spinach pies. The filling contains spinach, lemon, onion, pepper & sumac. What would be a good alternative to sumac in this recipe?

Hi,

I'm looking for a place to have dinner & drinks near the Armory (67th & Park Ave). I'd prefer something where entrees are under $17. Not sure what type of food I'm in the mood for. We'll be wearing business clothes. We're adventurous & will eat anything.

Upper East Side Restaurant Chatter (and more)

I just went to Andre's for lunch. The bean soup & veal goulash were very hearty and comforting. Yum! The service was friendly. I would definitely go back!

Cascabel Taqueria - UES

Hi!

I went due to your rec. :-) When we 1st walked in, we didn't realize you are supposed to order at the counter & then they bring you your food. We ordered the camaron tacos & the chorizo tacos. We both preferred the camaron tacos. We also ordered the Gorditas de Puerco. I loved it. My DH thought it was "weird." He thought the sauce was too sweet & didn't think the cucumber was "necessary." I liked all the different salsas they had. I didn't like that they didn't give you an extra plate. They served both our tacos on 1 small platter. So as we were eating our tacos, we made a mess all over the table. For dessert, we ordered churros & hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was amazing. I would go to the restaurant just for the hot chocolate. The churros were not so good. They weren't shaped like churros. They were smaller versions of Dunkin Donut Munchkins. They give you a small paper envelope with 3 of these teeny weeny "churros." To add insult to injury, they were ice cold. The service was very friendly. It has a bright & cheery atmosphere. I liked the music they were playing. I'd go back.

Lunch near Columbus & 70th ?

We ended up eating at Lansky's. We shared a Riverside Sandwich, which had pastrami, brisket & cheddar. The sandwich was way too big for me to eat myself. Thinking about the pastrami is making my mouth water. I wish I could have it again for dinner. We also had a potato & a spinach knish, and egg creams. The knishes were so nice & fluffy (the best knish I've had in quite awhile), and the egg creams were well-executed. Everything was great! Service was fast and friendly.
I would definitely go back.
