Where Have All the Artisans Gone

Researching food in the North End for a magazine article. Seems there are fewer and fewer butchers, bakers, and sausage-makers there these days. Does anyone know where to still find hand-made cheese, salumi, bread, etc. in the North End?

Verrill Farm Opens New Stand Today

It's huge, compared to what they have and had! Hope they can fill it up. Going there today. http://www.verrillfarm.com/

L'espalier and O Ya (and boston food) in WSJ

Had to get the dictionary out to decipher this article--decorticated? (did he mean "husked"); raffine?; conurbation? I don't usually find Sokolov so arrogant--seems he has some axe to grind with the Boston restaurant scene--interesting that his son got married here. I don't like the comparisons/put-down of B to NY: New York is NY; Boston is Boston. Can't we be distinctive and still be good?

I could a had a V8!

Anyone know where to buy Ruccolino? It's an Italian amaro made from ARUGULA, and it's delicious, not to mention full of anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals. It's made on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. I haven't seen it at any of the usual places in the Boston area. Thanks.

Domaine de Canton

Does anyone know of any restaurants/bars in Boston/Cambridge that serves this delicious liqueur? It's made in France and combines ginger, eau de vie, and cognac--it's verrrry ginger-y. I had it for the first time at the event, "Cochon 555," in April at the Liberty Hotel and have been thinking about it ever since..

Community sustainable seafood

Picking up my first share tomorrow in Acton and am very interested to see how smoothly it works out (the distribution, the instruction, etc). I'll report back. Coincidentally, my husband is going striper fly-fishing on the Cape the same day. Hopefully, he'll catch and release as he usually does. Can't exactly figure if 4-5 lbs a week is too much--it's just the 2 of us, but weekend bar-b-q sounds like a good way to use it up. Thanks for the tips.

Dessert as Reward

After 1 month of dieting, I've decided to pause and have one, great dessert. Where should I go for that 1 spectacular (doesn't have to mean "big"), worth-every-calorie sweet treat?

Thanks.

Preserving food

Are chowhounds finding that they or their friends are doing a lot more of food preserving (caning, freezing, drying, etc.) these days in this down economy? Are you planting more gardens or thinking of it? Has the economy affected your food choices?
Thanks.

Liberty Hotel

Has anyone eaten/drunk at any of the venues in the Liberty Hotel? Is the food good? What's the ambience like?

Charlestown restaurants

Bought a place recently in Charlestown. I know about Olives and Figs. Are there any other places that are any good? Anything worthwhile in the Navy Yard? Thanks.

Vegetarian restaurants or Veggie Friendly places?

Not in your area but the vegetarian food at Life Alive Urban Oasis and Cafe in Lowell in the arts district is fabulous. It was written about recently in Boston Globe. Everything is super fresh, much of it local. You won't be disappointed. Afterwards, you can go to Caffe Paradiso on the corner, for dessert!

Revisiting Pesce Blue

Ate recently at Portsmouth's Pesce Blue. New owners. They have about 30 wines by the glass and starting to get into small plates so it's more affordable. Really, really good food. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Del Posto

what's it like? How much should I expect to spend? Is the tasting menu worth it?

Back to Basics

I'm new to chowhound and need a little help navigating. How do I post a query: I'd like to ask other chowhounds what they think about the forgotten tradition of Sunday Dinner--why is it gone; does anyone try to keep up the tradition; does anyone care? What part of the site do I post this on and where do I go to read the responses? Basic, I know, but there's no "help" button that I can find
Thanks.

Limoncello or 5NorthSquare

Another "yes" for Limoncello. True it's not a gourmet dining experience, but it's what I go out to eat in a resturant for--good, attentive service, a welcoming attitude, and good food for the price. Also, I like the location a little "off the beaten path."
Rosie

dinner in Portland

Enjoyed reading all these posts about Portland restaurants. I've been to Fore St. several times (I love the atmosphere and the simply prepared local food. Have noticed the "tude" sometimes but I expect it now and then. It's usually not pervasive, and some restaurant folks just let popularity go to their heads. Hugo's food was wonderful and I did leave feeling full but I, too, was surprised at the tiny portions). What's the general consensus about The Portland Lobster Co.? It recently changed owners and I wondered if anything new is planned for the space.
