ISO Hawaiian SHAVE ICE

Thanks for the info. Just curious how does this truck stack up against Get Shaved and Brian's?

ISO Hawaiian SHAVE ICE

Old post that just keeps going. I concur about Get Shaved. I've tried Brian's on Sawtelle, and GS is consistently better, tho Brian's is very good. The new places seem much superior to the old standbys like Shakas and Teri Hawaii.

Also for those who travel to Oahu, Waiola, my old favorite, is also being superceded by newcomers like Shimazu Store, Ailana and Mountain Magic. Fine shaving and superior syrup and toppings makes the shave ice scene on Oahu outstanding. North Shore offerings Matsumoto's and Aoki's really don't hold a candle to these places.

Shave ice on the Malibu Pier

I too am a shave ice lover. I just got back from Oahu enjoying the finest of their shave ice, notably Shimazu Store, Ailana and Jung's.

What are your favorites, both here and Hawaii?

I don't make it out to Malibu Pier, but this is another reason (Grom is the other) to drive out there.

Westside- Westchester, El Segundo, Venice- Burger Craving

Yes to 26 Beach, the best burger in the area you mentioned.
Thompkins Square, a gastro pub, is another option. Hinano serves a good burger, but it's a true dive bar.

Food for plane on route from midtown to LAX

Re: parking at Fox Hills, I always park on the north end of the mall coming from Slauson, which would be from where Sasha would come. It's much quieter than the crazy south side.

Food for plane on route from midtown to LAX

Actually Fox Hills is unlike any other food court in LA. In fact Gold did an article on it. And I don't know which Asian mall food you frequent, but you couldn't do better than 101 Noodle Express or Kyochon.

Food for plane on route from midtown to LAX

Fox Hills Mall isn't far from La Cienega, tho it's a matter of parking and walking into the food court. But if you don't mind that, there is 101 Noodle Express with their beef rolls and Kyochon for their Korean style fried chicken.

Also M&M Soul Food.

Closer to LAX is the Good Pizza, just off La Tijera. Great thin crust pizza. Bristol Farms near LIncoln and Manchester has nice takeout offerings as well.

Also, Pann's strength is not their burgers, but their patty melts, but maybe that's the same difference.

Cheap Lunch in Santa Monica?

A few places come to mind:

Joe's Pizza
Tacos Por Favor
La Isla Bonita taco truck
Tender Greens soups (most items over $7)
Veggie Grill (some items run over $7)
True Food Kitchen has healthy juices

Going into Venice:
Wurstkuche

PRIME RIB

Thanks, Norm Man. Though I ate at the Wood Ranch Camarillo and Houston's El Segundo, both have LA locations. But the Tam O'Shanter sounds like a great idea. Hot fudge sundae? I'm there.

PRIME RIB

Late last year, I happened to have prime rib at three locations, Lawry's, Houston's in El Segundo and the Wood Ranch in Camarillo. The surprising winner was Wood Ranch, although Houston's was very good as well. Lawry's was the biggest disapointment to me especially for the high price.

Meatball Subs

A classic meatball recipe generally includes beef, pork and veal. don't know about Bay Cities, though.

Pier Burger on The Santa Monica Pier. Sounds Good.

I went when they opened and enjoyed the burger, decent and reasonably priced for the Pier. The custard is dispensed from soft serve machines and not custard machines. They said the machines were coming, but they would have to do work on the space to get them in. The custard as is tastes a little off. I'm waiting for the custard machines to come in. I believe it will be the only true custard place in LA. Strickland's in Irvine has all the consistency of custard and even can be held upside down, but contains no egg. Love to hear what others think.

Best gourmet ice cream and patisserie?

Straus cream makes Mother Moo a must try for next time I'm in the area.

Weekday Sushi Lunch near Century City

If you consider Sawtelle Blvd and Olympic near, Kiriko has a great and inexpensive (for sushi) omakase.

Best gourmet ice cream and patisserie?

For pastries

Huckleberry is a very good choice.

Also the Farm Shop in Santa Monica

Pain Du Jour, also in Santa Monica

Sweet Lady Jane in West Hollywood and Santa Monica.

Best gourmet ice cream and patisserie?

Some great suggestions here. Here are some not yet mentioned and worth trying.

For gelato, Bulgarini in Altadena and in Culver City at the Teaforest Teahouse. Pistachio, goatmilk and any seasonal flavors.

Also gelato, Scoops for the most interesting ice cream flavors you'll ever enjoy. Hollywood and Culver City. Brown bread is a regular favorite, but the flavor offerings change dramatically. Be open to the wild choices here.

Milk on Melrose for great sundaes and shakes.

Handels in Redondo Beach and Upland for the best ice cream flavors. And they always have a lot on hand. Try some of the cream pie flavors, like banana.

I'm not that impressed with the flavor offerings at Sweet Rose Creamery. I much prefer Carmela's in Altadena, especially the salted caramel.

Persian ice cream here really rocks. Saffron & Rose in Westwood and Mashti Malone in Hollywood are both terrific.

Fosselman's is a long time institution here, with some detractors, but worth a visit.

For something different, Paradis is a Danish gelato chain in Glendale and Long Beach. It's a lighter gelato than the Italian version.

Good food near LA Memorial Coliseum?

Across the 110 Freeway is a surprising little food court that houses some of the best little restaurants in LA, Chichen Itza for Southern Mexican and Mo-Chica for outstanding Peruvian.

Inka Deli - Peruvian in Mar Vista

I went here Thursday evening based on everyone's recommendations. I didn't call beforehand, but just hoped for the best. The El Agave restaurant was nearly empty, and Ernesto was behind the counter. I ordered the whole chicken, with garlic rice and salad for $16. the order took maybe 10 minutes. I thought the chicken was flavorful and juicy and a little salty, but good. The garlic rice was really delicious.

I hope to try other items on the menu. Certainly good to have this place in the neighborhood.

LA's Best Ramen?

I guess you can try all three places in one session. Just know that both Yamadaya and Jidaiya get very crowded. The counter is your best bet for both. Mottainai is more spacious.

Yamadaya(Crenshaw) and Jidaiya (Western) are freeway close on the 405. Mottainai is in the Redondo Beach Blvd Marukai shopping complex in Gardena. Happy slurping.

That chicken/pork broth was the first I've ever had.

Paco's Cantina on Centinela?

My wife loves this place. Her excuse is, she's from Hawaii. It's standard American Mexican fare. Actually surprised that you would ask about this place.

LA's Best Ramen?

Just had Jidaiya yesterday for lunch. I agree. Subjectively it was a real "wow" experience for me. When I went, it was packed with nearly all Japanese expats and a line outside. There is a counter for solo dining. For lunch they have Yokohama Tonkotsu, Tokyo Yatai (chicken and pork broth) and Sapporo (spicy). The dinner menu includes Tan Tan Men and Tsukemen. The Yokohama has the thick noodles. I chose the Tokyo Yatai and had an extra side of chashu, which was absolutely delicious, juicy and tender. The noodles were firm, the broth tasty and the egg was perfect. The UFO gyoza was okay, just not the right crisp. Options include extra noodles for $1.50 and free garlic.

Parking is much better here than at Yamadaya and is closer to my work. Service was great. This will be a regular spot for me. I agree with Raizans: this belongs with Yamadaya and Mottainai and definitely worth a trip.

Milo & Olive or Stella Rossa?

Milo & Olive over Stella Rosa, although I like them both.

Good Thin-Crust Pizza on Westside?

sorry for responding so late. Yes they are related, or were. Last year M Street (Formerly LGO Sant Monica) and LGO Pasadena split off.

Gonpachi in the Miyako Hybrid Hotel? $16 burger ...

There was a post ealier that declared this the best burger in LA. It's not, IMHO. It's ambitious, though. That black brioche bun is rather unique.

Gonpachi in the Miyako Hybrid Hotel? $16 burger ...

Gonpachi is a sushi bar first. I have tried the burger, since it's not far from where I work. I found it decent. It comes with fries, miso soup and a salad, FYI.

Apparently the Sushi chef from the now-closed Gonpachi Beverly Hills is now working here, which might make this one of the better sushi bars in Torrance.

Bigmista's Barbecue at the Sierra Madre Farmers Market

Thanks for the heads up. Facebook said the FM is open until 8 PM. I hadn't checked Bigmista's website in quite a while and noticed a lot of changes. Wow! Wednesdays for lunch in Harbor City. Is he running silmultaneous operations on Sundays at Atwater and Long Beach?

Real, Traditional Club Sandwich in LA?

Funny that you mention Denny's. Years and years ago, Denny's Superbird was my favorite item on their menu. Essentially a club SW with avocado. Denny's doesn't make it that way anymore, a mere shell of its past. Good luck to withnail in his/her search.

With the popularity of bacon today, I wonder if any place is serving a quality gourmet club sandwich, which is not the OP's request. But it would have roast turkey with great bacon and avocado? Sorry for the hijacking of this post.

Bulgarini Gelato served in Culver City

Jase is correct about the goat milk. I just forgot to mention that one. Delicious. On a side note, the proprietor was commenting on how Leo was working on pasta dishes. That will be interesting, if he puts his heart into that as he does his gelato.

You could add Scoops to the mini crawl

Bulgarini Gelato served in Culver City

Finally got to Teaforest Tea and Coffee to sample their stock of Bulgarini Gelato. I had greatly enjoyed the store in Altadena. The proprietor of Teaforest was very friendly and accomodating, allowing me to sample nearly every flavor he had.

Pistachio is amazing; it was nearly like eating a pistachio out of the shell.

Vanilla bean was wonderfully unique, not like vanilla flavoring at all.

Blood Orange ice

Burnt Macadamia

Salt Chocolate: Very rich. Delicious

Chocolate

Mango: very true mango flavor

It was a real treat. I took home 3 scoops: Mango, Pistachio and Salt Chocolate where my wife, a pistachio lover, declared it the best ever.

Suddenly Westside Ice Cream has gotten better and better.

Teaforest is on Washington Blvd across the street from the Helms Building.

8686 Washington Blvd
Culver City.

2012 Coffee List - Since any other list is Outdated

Nice to hear from someone who shares common tastes re coffee. My wife has gotten spoiled by Funnel Mill. It seems all the coffees they carry there are greatly enhanced by the syphon.

Maybe we'll see each other at Funnel Mill.
