Pizza bread sub sandwich at Urbana Illinois restaurant in the 1970s
It wouldn't be Papa Del's would it? I know they had the "breadiest" pizza at the time. I am thinking though Papa Del's was in Champaign.
THE BREAD BASKET, HAMMOND, INDIANA
I don't know if they still do it but a few years ago they would sell a bag of the ends of loaves for next to nothing. If you like the ends like I do that was some good eating. Great with a bowl of soup at home.
Spending a week in the Dayton/Piqua area, Coldwater Cafe was great, what else?
East of Piqua in Urbana is a small grill called Grabill's.They make these little slider like burgers, maybe 4 seats in the whole place.I wouldn't necessarily say its worth driving from Piqua but if you get a little east of there its a fun place to say you had been and the burgers are actually pretty good.
DeLuxe fish sandwich, Champaign
And remember no tartar sauce on the fish.DeLuxe is where I began to like ketchup on fish sandwiches and I am not a big ketchup fan.
Fried Chicken Livers - South Western Michigan/Northern Indiana
Rodini's on South Franklin Street (US 421) in Michigan CIty ,Indiana presents fried chicken livers on their "relish" plate they give every table prior to ordering. I would assume you could also order them as an entree or in whatever quantity you like.I dont have the link but it is off I-94 at just off of exit 34B
AMTRAK day trips, west from Detroit
You can take the train to New Buffalo. The Four Winds Casino has a shuttle that meets every train totake you to the Four Winds. They have a nice buffet and the Copper Rock restaurant is a god steakhouse. If you don't want to go the casino,Bentwood ,Casey's,The Stray Dog,Brewsters,El Rancho Grande,Redamaks are all restaurants in walking distance. In reality the shopping isn't much to take the trip for.You can take the train stay at the Harbor Grand Hotel and never need a car.

Any good eats between South Bend IN and Grand Rapids MI?
I haven't been there so I can't say for sure but a lot of people have been saying nice things about Wheatberry Restaurant in Buchanan,Michigan north of the city on Red Bud trail. We are going there for dinner Sunday so I can speak better after that.I suppose in the Michiana area that is about the newest restaurant that has been getting positive feedback.Otherwise in the search function many of the other restaurants are listed.Good Luck.
Friday night we had excellent wood oven pizza at Stop 50 Pizza in Michiana Shore,Indiana right before Michigan City just off of route 12.
Döner Kebob anywhere, esp. in South Bend area?
The closest to South Bend I have ever eaten a Doner Kebab is Elora,Ontario.I saw them in Toronto during my last visit..My sense is they are probably in Windsor and Sarnia. With Detroit's Middle Eastern population there maybe some restaurants there that serve them.I don't think Elia's in South Bend or Sahara in MIchigan City have them.
Thanksgiving Dinner SW Michigan/NE Indiana?
You might want to consider the buffet at the Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo.Skip's in New Buffalo may well be open. The Strongbow Inn in Valparaiso is known for their Thanksgiving dinners.Possibly Heston Bar or their banquet hall the Heston Hills also may be a consideration. They are in the Laporte area.
Any Halusky in Chicago?
I know they have it at Pierogi Fest in Whiting,Indiana. This year it is July24th thru the 26th.There is a Slovak Club in Merrillville,Indiana on Braodway also that might have it on the menu.Good stuff!!!!!
Eating our way up Michigan's western coast
Drier's in Three Oaks is still open.Best liverwurst I ever had.I loved Hyerdahl's but it was old school and lost favor I guess. just don't know.Last time I looked it was a Roma's pizza from a branch of the same family that used to own the one in New Buffalo.
Dinner in Michigan City
Hacienda has been rebuilt and reopened for over a year.It is absolutely amazing Hacienda does the business it does considering how bad it is.Goes to show you what nachos, salsa and frozen margaritas will do for people.I do understand the Hacienda in Benton Harbor,MIchigan has closed.
Eating our way up Michigan's western coast
Hyerdahl's is closed in Bridgman and Redamak's is in New Buffalo.
Iggy's - New Buffalo, MI
Its Ozzies.Very good frozen custard which I like much more than the harder ice cream at Oinks.Mickey's sports bar just opened in Union Pier but I think any place that calls itself a sports bar must sign an agreement to have that same menu as every other as every other Chilis, Applebees, Bennigans and Houlihans in the world. The Bentwood Cafe at the Marina Grand Hotel in the harbor is very good and rather new.Jimmys on south Whttaker has its fans. The crepes place is Pierre-Anne.Marylynn's just opened on west Buffalo St.(US 12) for breakfast/lunch.Villa Nova pizza on east Buffalo has recently opened.Have Fun
Dinner in Michigan City
All good choices have been suggested. If you go to New Buffalo also consider Skip's for prime rib.One place in Michigan City I always like is Rodini's on south Franklin Street. Its pretty old school and usually packed on Saturdays.Portofino on route 39 north of Laporte is good. Most places fill up on summer weekends on Saturday.Have fun
Mother's Day Brunch near Benton Harbor, MI
curious where you ended up going and how it was
Mother's Day Brunch near Benton Harbor, MI
I don't know from St.Joe/BH .Further west (south) Skip's ,Four Winds Casino and Whitaker Woods Golf Club are having traditonal M- day brunch. We are going to Skip's.
Has anyone ever had - New Buffalo, Michigan
Brunch at Hannah's is good. You also might want to try the sunday brunch at Skip's.The prime rib alone is worth it.
24 Hour Diners between Michigan City, IN and Chicago
Try the Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo. It is right off of 94 exit 1 in Michigan. The Willowbrook cafe at the casino is open 24/7.Also free valet and a covered parking garage so it is very convenient to get in and out. They have a decent menu and all day breakfast .There are some truck stops off of the Burns Harbor exit #22 and Ripley Street exit 15 that I am sure are open 24/7 I am not sure if Lindo's or Dino's in Michigan City are open 24 hours anymore. That would be exit 34B.
Where's the Best Breakfast/Brunch in Berrien & Cass Counties Michigan?
I think Sophia's and its much better than IHOP.It has the same exact menu as Blueberry Hill in Niles. That being said its I am sure a Greek family run restaurant as many of that ilk are in Berrien County. There is Prime Table in Niles again the Greek coffess shop breakfast all day type of restaurant.Once in a while I will stop in the what is it Cozy Corner or Cozy Kitchen on Front street in Niles. This is one of those biscuits and gravy type of places where everyone knows each other and you know they know you arent a regular when you go in there.I thinks its one of those 6am to 1 pm kind of places just breakfast and some lunch.Probably Cracker Barrel has taken a lot of the business in that Stevensville area but there is a restaurant on Red Arrow around Glenlord Road that opened in the last few years that I have noticed .In Brigman there is Sammy's which I have always enjoyed for breakfast and across the street is Olympus which I do not think is as good.In Three Oaks a lot of people enjoy Viola's.I am not sure about the menu at Bailey's Cafe.Skip's in Union Pier is open for Sunday brunch and the prime rib alone is worth the price of admission.Hannah's in New Buffalo has always had a nice Saturday/Sunday brunch.Kites kitchen is good.Rosie's diner or the Wheel Inn aren't worth going out of your way for but if you are in the area.I do not know much of what is goingon in Cass County. We walked by the Woodfire Grill in Dowagiac and saw they had what appeared to be a nice Sunday brunch.Actually while I am thinking of it the Fourwinds casino puts out a nice spread in the buffet and the Willowbrook cafe there has an all day breakfast menu and it is open 24 hours. The prices are fairly reasonable. All in all there is no where that I would tell someone to drive out from Chicago for nor are there probably any real outstanding places but you can still eat pretty well here.My favorites would be Sophia's and Sammy's.Good luck.I am sure others will chime in with pleny more I missed.
"Must eats" near/in New Buffalo, Michigan area please...
well you might enjoy the Rios taco stand west on US 12.A new restaurant just opened near Oink's ,The Happy Bhudda Noodle Shop.I have enjoyed it.Skips for prime rib,Stop 50 pizza in Michiana Shores for wood fired pizza,Brewsters for italian food,Bentwood restaurant in the Marina Grand Hotel where the food is good and the view is nice with a drink outside. The Willowbrook cafe at the casino if you don't want the buffet thing or the expense of the Copper Rock Steakhouse which is also very good.Pierre Anne creperie if you are into that sort of meal. There are no "can't miss" places just places to get some decent meals and enjoy the area.
Western Michigan eats
The sweet crepes at Pierre-Anne are very good but essentially fresh fruit in a crepe. When I read your post the first things that came to my mind are the pies at Crane Orchards in Fennville and the pies baked in a bag at Jollay Orchard in Coloma. They will fulfill anyones sweet tooth. There is also a place called the Chocolate garden on the way to Jollay Orchards.
one night...la porte indiana
You might want to head up route 39 to New Buffalo and try Copper Rock steak house at the Four Winds casino.Otherwise when my wife's company has business guests in town they stay at the Blue Heron Inn and eat at TBones in the hotel,She said everyone enjoys their meals there.Reed's recently reopened downtown but I don't know how that is going. Also just north of Laporte city on route 39 is Portofinos at the Briar Leaf golf course.Enjoy your visit
Indiana & Michigan - close to Interstate 80
For a good homestyle meal get off at the Middlebury exit in Indiana maybe it is 116 I forget.Go thru Middlebury to route 20 and turn right about a mile for Das Essenhaus.Amish/Mennonite style meals. You will eat enough there you can make it to the other end of the trip.

Northwest Indiana - Grocery Stores
the funny thing is whole foods has a distribution warehouse in munster on 45th,seems like it would be a no brainer to set up a store nearby,
Northwest Indiana - Grocery Stores
It seems to me that the one is Winfield which isn't too far from Crown Point is the most interesting grocery store I have seen in NW Indiana ( besides some of those neat little Mexican grocery stores around the area).I think it is called Amelias? The times I have gone there I went to route 30 and turned at the sign for Lake of the Four Seasons.I am sure there are better ways to get there for you.
Vegetarian in Michiana
I tried this new Ali Baba's on Edison next to the Enterprise Rent a car across from Bonefish Grill in Mishawaka. They have a number of vegetarian options.I enjoyed the hummous, tabouleh, grape leaves,The kibbe was a bit dry and the meat pie (svehah?) maybe was yesterdays but I would give it another shot. The vegetarian combo was about 11 bucks I think.
